If Firefox’s Add Split View option is missing, first check that you’re using Firefox 149 or newer and right-clicking an actual tab—not a bookmark. Mozilla documents three ways to create a split; if those do not work, a disabled preference is one forum-reported possibility, not an official setup step.
Check your Firefox version
Mozilla says Split View is available starting with Firefox 149. If you’re using an earlier version, update Firefox and check again. You can confirm the installed version from Firefox’s Help > About Firefox menu on desktop; the exact menu placement can vary by operating system.
Make sure you’re opening the menu on a tab
Right-click—or Control-click on a Mac—an actual tab in the tab bar, then choose Add Split View. The command is associated with a tab, not a bookmark in the Bookmarks Toolbar. This can be easy to confuse with vertical tabs, where bookmarks and tabs may appear close together.
In a March 2026 Mozilla Support thread about Firefox 149, moderator James diagnosed the missing command this way: “Looks like you are right-clicking on a Bookmark in the Bookmarks Toolbar and not on a Tab.”

Try another documented way to create a split
Pair two tabs you already have open
- Select both tabs in the same Firefox window. Use Ctrl-click on Windows or Linux, or Command-click on Mac, to select a second tab without losing the first selection.
- Right-click or Control-click one of the selected tabs and choose Open in Split View.
If the selected tabs are far apart in the tab strip, Firefox places the split beside the active tab.
Start from a single tab
Right-click or Control-click a tab and choose Add Split View. Firefox opens a second-pane tab list. Choose an open tab from the list, or select the right pane and enter a website address in the address bar.

Use the keyboard-assisted method
Hold Alt on Windows or Linux, or Option on Mac, while clicking another tab in the same window.
Check whether the Split View preference is disabled
A Mozilla Support forum reply identifies a false browser.tabs.splitView.enabled preference as a reason Split View may not work. This is a forum-based troubleshooting lead; Mozilla’s main help article does not recommend editing about:config as the normal way to enable the feature.

If you’re comfortable checking advanced preferences, enter about:config in the address bar and search for browser.tabs.splitView.enabled. If it is set to false, that may explain why the feature is unavailable. Changing advanced settings carries risk; don’t change other preferences based on guesswork.
Check whether the behavior is a documented limitation
- Only two tabs can be shown at once. Split View does not support pinned tabs.
- Closing either tab ends the split. The remaining tab stays open as a regular tab.
- Find in Page applies to the active pane only. Switch panes if you need to search the other page.
- Session restoration is limited. Mozilla says splits return when you reopen a recently closed window or when Open previous windows and tabs is enabled. Reopening closed tabs with Ctrl+Shift+T on Windows/Linux or Command+Shift+T on Mac does not restore a split.
If the option is still missing
If you have Firefox 149 or newer, have tried the tab context menu and the other documented creation methods, and the setting above does not explain the problem, the cited Mozilla guidance does not establish a further fix. Avoid assuming that reinstalling Firefox or repairing a profile will resolve it; the sources do not promise that outcome.

Mozilla Support also discussed feedback about the placement of an Open Link in Split View context-menu item. In June 2026, Mozilla staff member Kiki said the feedback had been heard and taken into consideration, while noting that a fix had not yet been implemented. That comment concerns menu feedback; it does not establish that a current Split View bug is responsible for a missing tab command.
