For most Linux users, the best alternative to a Firefox screenshot extension is already built into Firefox: its screenshot tool captures a selected region, the visible page, or the full page, and lets you save or copy the image. For annotations or desktop-wide captures, try Flameshot; for browser-based markup, consider SnapLocal. Firefox Developer Tools are useful when you need to capture a specific page element or configure repeatable captures. If you need screenshots of websites from an API or an AI agent, ScreenshotNeo is a separate service to try first.

Choose the right kind of screenshot tool

Start by deciding whether you need an image of a web page or of your Linux desktop. Firefox’s built-in tool and its Developer Tools capture web content. Flameshot is a desktop screenshot application. SnapLocal is a Firefox add-on for browser capture and markup. These solve different problems, so a desktop tool is not necessarily a replacement for full-page web capture, and a browser extension is not necessarily suitable for capturing other applications.

  • Just need a page image? Try Firefox’s built-in screenshot interface.
  • Need an element-only or configurable capture? Use Firefox Developer Tools.
  • Want browser capture with markup or redaction? Review SnapLocal’s current add-on listing.
  • Need desktop-wide capture, annotation, or command-line options? Consider Flameshot and verify it with your desktop session.

Use Firefox’s built-in screenshot tool

Firefox can capture a selected part of a page, the visible area, or the full page, then save the image or copy it to the clipboard. That covers ordinary web-page screenshots without installing an extension. See Mozilla’s Take screenshots in Firefox instructions for the current interface and controls.

One compatibility caveat: Mozilla documents that moving the screenshot crosshair does not work on Wayland. This is a limitation of that crosshair interaction, not evidence that every Firefox screenshot method is broken on Wayland. If the selection tool does not behave as expected, try a different capture method below or use a desktop tool compatible with your session.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Capture full pages or individual elements with Developer Tools

Firefox Developer Tools provide a built-in route for full-page screenshots and screenshots of a single page element. In the Inspector, use the node’s screenshot command to capture that element. Firefox also documents the :screenshot console helper for configurable captures, including options for delay, clipboard, filename, full-page capture, and CSS selector. Consult Mozilla’s Taking screenshots guide for the exact syntax and available options in your Firefox version.

This method is more technical than a one-click extension, but it avoids adding an add-on and is useful when the capture needs to target a particular element or be repeated with settings. If you only need a quick visible-page image, the ordinary screenshot interface is simpler.

Consider browser add-ons for capture and markup

SnapLocal

SnapLocal’s Mozilla Add-ons listing describes area, visible-page, full-page, and delayed capture, plus annotation, blur, redaction, clipboard copying, and PNG saving. The listing also claims that processing is local and makes no network requests. Those privacy and feature statements are the developer’s claims, not an independent audit. The listing had zero reviews at the time it was accessed, so treat that as time-sensitive marketplace metadata rather than a quality measure. Review the current listing before installing.

Mozilla identifies addons.mozilla.org as its official site for discovering and installing Firefox add-ons. Marketplace presence is not a guarantee of independent security assurance: add-ons come from a broad community, and some may be automatically published and reviewed by editors after listing. Check the author, requested permissions, update history, and privacy claims before granting access.

ShareX Firefox add-on

The ShareX add-on adds an “Upload with ShareX” action for selected images, video, audio, and text. It is an integration with the ShareX application, not a standalone Linux screenshot tool. The add-on listing does not establish that the ShareX application is available for Linux, so verify that dependency and its compatibility before choosing this route.

Use Flameshot for desktop captures and annotation

Flameshot is a Linux desktop screenshot candidate when you want on-screen annotation, customization, or command-line operation rather than just a browser-page capture. Its official site describes it as a free, open-source, cross-platform screenshot tool with built-in features; its documentation lists distribution packages, AppImage, and Flatpak as installation routes. See Flameshot and the official installation documentation for current details.

Package versions can lag upstream, and compatibility is not established for every Wayland compositor, desktop environment, or distribution build. Check your distribution’s package information and test Flameshot in the exact session you use. Do not assume that support on one Linux desktop guarantees identical behavior on another.

For privacy-sensitive screenshots, distinguish capture from redaction: blurring or redacting in an add-on is only useful if the result is actually removed or obscured before sharing. Check the tool’s behavior and where processing occurs rather than assuming that a listing’s privacy wording proves it. For compatibility, test the particular browser, distribution, desktop environment, and display server you use.

If you need website screenshots from code rather than from your desktop, ScreenshotNeo is an API and MCP server for developers. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its clean-shot workflow accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Troubleshoot common problems

The Firefox selection crosshair does not move

If you are using Wayland, this matches the specific limitation Mozilla documents for moving the screenshot crosshair. Try another Firefox capture route, such as Developer Tools, or use a desktop tool after checking its compatibility with your compositor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A full-page or element capture is not available where expected

Use Firefox’s Developer Tools route for full-page or Inspector node captures, and consult Mozilla’s documentation for the current steps and console options. The built-in screenshot interface remains a straightforward choice for region, visible-page, and full-page captures.

An add-on’s permissions or privacy claims are unclear

Review its current author, requested permissions, update history, and privacy policy on Mozilla Add-ons. A listing does not substitute for an independent security review; avoid granting permissions you do not need.

Flameshot behaves differently across Linux systems

Check whether you installed a distribution package, AppImage, or Flatpak and whether the package version is current enough for your needs. Then test in the specific desktop and Wayland or X11 session you use. The available official installation information does not establish behavior across every compositor or distro build.

The ShareX add-on does not complete an upload

The browser add-on depends on the ShareX application. Confirm that the application is installed and usable on your Linux system; the add-on listing alone does not confirm Linux application availability.

Frequently asked questions

Can Firefox take a full-page screenshot on Linux without an extension?

Yes. Firefox’s built-in screenshot interface supports full-page capture, and Developer Tools offer another route.

Which option is best for annotating screenshots?

For desktop captures with annotation tools, consider Flameshot. For browser captures with markup, SnapLocal’s listing describes annotation and redaction features; evaluate its current permissions and privacy claims before installing.

Does the Firefox screenshot tool fail completely on Wayland?

No. Mozilla documents a specific limitation with moving the screenshot crosshair; that does not establish that all Firefox screenshot capture is broken.
