If Firefox’s Report broken site command is missing or grayed out, first open the website that is actually malfunctioning. The reporting tool is unavailable from a New Tab page and Firefox about: pages. From the affected site, try the Firefox menu or the shield icon beside the address bar. If both routes fail, check Firefox’s data-sharing setting—but enabling it is optional and has a privacy tradeoff.

Open the report tool from an eligible page

Navigate to the website that is broken, then try either of Mozilla’s documented routes:

  1. Open the Firefox menu and select Report broken site.
  2. Alternatively, select the shield icon at the left of the address bar and choose the report option in its panel. This route is especially relevant if the problem may be related to Enhanced Tracking Protection.

Mozilla says the reporting tool does not work from the New Tab page or Firefox about: pages. If the command is missing while you are on one of those pages, visit the affected site and check again. See Mozilla’s instructions for reporting a broken site in Firefox desktop and its guidance on Enhanced Tracking Protection.

Check Firefox’s data collection setting

If neither route shows the report panel on the problem site, inspect Settings > Privacy & Security > Firefox Data Collection and Use. Mozilla Support forum solutions report that the command may be hidden when Allow Firefox to send technical and interaction data to Mozilla is turned off, and may return when it is turned on.

This setting connection is reported in support discussions, including examples from Firefox 123 in February 2024 and another report in November 2024; Mozilla’s current report-help article does not independently confirm it as a general requirement. It may not explain every case, particularly on managed installations or other versions. You do not have to enable data sharing: decide whether the privacy tradeoff is acceptable to you. If you change the setting, return to the affected site and check whether the command appears. The forum examples are documented in this Mozilla Support discussion and this later discussion.

Use tracking protection only as a site-specific diagnostic

If you suspect Enhanced Tracking Protection is interfering with the site, open its shield panel and temporarily turn protection off for that site. Mozilla describes this as a site-specific control. If disabling protection resolves the problem, you can use the shield panel’s report option. This is a way to investigate a site issue, not a required fix for a missing report command.

Review the report before submitting it

Mozilla says a report may include the reported page URL, the breakage category you select, optional comments, browser and device details, graphics information, privacy settings, security-software information, Firefox languages, a receipt timestamp, and a single-use UUID. Information you type in the description is included too.

  • Inspect the prefilled URL. Remove sensitive query parameters or other personal information before sending, while keeping in mind that changing the URL can make it harder to reproduce the problem.
  • Keep optional notes concise and do not include passwords, account details, or other secrets.

Mozilla says the Webcompat Team reviews reports and tries to remove information that may have been included incidentally in URLs or comments before sharing reports with Mozilla personnel working on the issue. Mozilla may create a Bugzilla issue; URLs submitted to public Bugzilla are manually reviewed first to remove identifiable information. Report data is also retained separately for trend analysis and aggregated statistics, and may be shared with researchers in de-identified or aggregated form. Read Mozilla’s reporting and data-handling details before submitting if you want to assess what may be sent.

If the command is still unavailable

If the affected page is not a New Tab or about: page, both access routes fail, and checking the data-collection setting does not help, the available evidence does not establish one universal cause. Firefox version, platform, release channel, or an organization’s policies may matter. For a version-specific diagnosis, note your Firefox version and operating system, whether the technical-and-interaction-data setting is enabled, and whether Firefox is managed by an organization.
