Whether you can recover a deleted Firefox download depends on what was deleted. Choosing Clear Downloads removes entries from Firefox’s download history but leaves the files on your computer. Choosing Delete on a download entry removes the file from disk. In the first case, find the file in its download folder; in the second, check your system’s trash, backups, or the original download source.
First, tell a missing download record from a missing file
Firefox’s Downloads panel and Library show records of downloads; the Library can also help locate a completed file. The Downloads panel focuses on recent items, while the Library keeps previous download entries. The key distinction is that a history entry and the downloaded file are separate: clearing the list does not delete the file, but choosing Delete for an entry removes the file from disk. Check the Library and download folder
- Open Firefox’s Downloads panel and choose Show all downloads to open the Library. Labels and placement can vary by Firefox release and operating system.
- If the download entry is present, use its folder or show-in-folder action to locate the file.
- If the entry is gone, check Firefox’s configured download destination. Search that folder and, if needed, the computer by the filename or its file extension.
Firefox saves downloads to the configured destination, or to the location you choose for an individual download. Mozilla notes that actions for a download entry may be unavailable if the file has been deleted, renamed, or moved. See Mozilla’s explanation of how Firefox handles file downloads.

How to retrieve a file that was deleted from disk
If the file is not in its expected folder, work through these options in order. None guarantees recovery; the available choices depend on your operating system, backup setup, and whether the original download is still accessible.

- Check the operating system’s Trash or Recycle Bin. If the file is there, use the system’s restore option.
- Check an existing backup or version history. Look at any system, cloud, or external backup you had configured before the deletion.
- Download the file again. If the original webpage or account is still available, return to it and download a fresh copy.
Mozilla’s download-handling page says, “The files you download will be immediately saved on your disk,” in the preferred destination or a location selected for that download. The download list itself is not a file-recovery system, and the consulted Mozilla guidance gives no recovery-success rates.
A temporary-folder check is only a low-confidence lead
If you opened the download in an external application, checking the system temporary folder may be worth a try. This suggestion comes from an older 2019 Mozilla community answer, not current general guidance, so treat it as a possibility rather than an expected location. Do not assume Firefox stores every download there: its current documentation says downloads are saved directly to disk in the configured destination. Can you restore cleared Firefox downloads?
You may be able to restore the download-history record if you have a suitable backup of Firefox profile data. Mozilla identifies places.sqlite as a profile database containing bookmarks, the list of downloaded files, and browsing history. It holds browser records—not the contents of the downloaded files. Mozilla lists important Firefox profile data and where it is stored.

This is community guidance, not a guarantee. Before attempting a restore, make a copy of the current Firefox profile. Replacing profile data can affect newer bookmarks and browsing history, and restoring the download record does not necessarily restore a missing file. What to expect from Firefox’s history controls
Firefox distinguishes clearing download history from removing a file through a download entry. If you want to clear history without deleting files, use the history-clearing control rather than Delete on an individual download. Mozilla’s instructions are in Delete browsing, search and download history on Firefox. The exact interface wording may differ across versions and operating systems.

Quick recovery decision guide
- The download entry is still in the Library: use its folder action, then check whether the file is present.
- The entry was cleared, but the file may remain: search Firefox’s configured destination and the rest of the computer.
- The file was deleted from disk: check Trash or Recycle Bin, an existing backup, and the original download source.
- You need the old download record: a backed-up
places.sqlitemay help, but preserve the current profile first and do not confuse restored history with restored file contents.
