Firefox does not provide a built-in button to export cookies as a portable CSV or JSON file. For a Firefox profile backup, preserve its cookies.sqlite database; to create a portable file such as Netscape cookies.txt or JSON, use a Firefox add-on and check its permissions and format first. Either kind of cookie file can expose active sessions, so protect it like a credential.
Choose the right kind of cookie export
“Export” can mean two different things:
- Back up or move Firefox profile data: preserve the profile, including
cookies.sqlite. This is Firefox’s cookie database, not a promised portable format for another browser or application. - Create a portable file: use an add-on that exports a format the destination accepts, such as JSON or Netscape
cookies.txt.
Mozilla identifies cookies.sqlite as the file where Firefox stores cookies. Its guidance describes the file’s role, not a conversion to CSV or guaranteed compatibility with other software. See Mozilla’s profile file reference and its explanation of cookies.
Back up Firefox cookies with the profile
Use Mozilla’s profile-backup procedure rather than treating a database copy as a portable export. Locate the active profile through Firefox’s profile or troubleshooting interface, then follow Mozilla’s current instructions to back up that profile. The profile contains more than cookies, and restoring it is different from importing a cookie file into another application.
If you are copying profile files manually, Mozilla Support community guidance advises closing Firefox first. Follow the official backup instructions for the full procedure; do not assume that copying cookies.sqlite alone will work as a complete profile restore.

Create a portable cookie file with an add-on
- Check the destination’s required format. Confirm whether it accepts JSON, Netscape
cookies.txt, JavaScript, or a specific encrypted format. These formats are not interchangeable. - Find the add-on on Mozilla Add-ons. Review its current description, supported Firefox version, last update, permissions, privacy information, and recent reviews before installing. Listings can change.
- Check its scope. Prefer an add-on that can export only the host or domain you need if that option is available. Cookie access requires the
cookiesAPI permission and host permissions for relevant sites; access across all websites is especially broad. Mozilla documents these requirements in its WebExtensions cookies API documentation. - Export only what you need. Use the add-on’s controls to select a site or domain, if supported, and choose the destination’s required format.
- Protect and remove the file. Store it securely, share it only through a trusted method when necessary, and delete it when the task is complete.

User counts, ratings, and update dates describe add-on listings; they do not establish security. Permission scope matters because an extension that can read cookies may access sensitive site data. Treat claims about encryption as claims to verify, including whether encryption happens locally and whether the recipient can open that file.

Keep exported cookies private
Cookies can preserve login status and preferences, and some may contain information a user supplied to a website. An exported cookie may let someone access a logged-in session. Do not post cookie files publicly, email them casually, upload them to an untrusted service, or paste cookie values into a public support thread. Export only the necessary sites, restrict access to the file, and delete it when you no longer need it.
Do not confuse cookie export with password export
Firefox’s built-in CSV export is for saved usernames and passwords in Password Manager; it does not export cookies. Mozilla warns that the password CSV is readable by anyone who can view the file. Use that feature only for passwords, not as a workaround for cookie export. See Mozilla’s instructions for exporting login data.
