Yes. Firefox added default-enabled support for Matroska (MKV) in Firefox 145, but that does not mean every MKV file will play. MKV is a container: the audio and video codecs inside it, your operating system’s codec support, and the playback method still matter.
What changed in Firefox 145
Mozilla’s tracking issue says the media.mkv.enabled preference has been enabled by default since Firefox 145. Mozilla’s developer-platform notice identifies Firefox 145 as the target and scopes the feature to regular media playback—not every web playback API or streaming mode. Mozilla’s tracking issue and its intent-to-ship notice describe the rollout.
Firefox 145.0 was first offered to Release-channel users on November 11, 2025, according to the Firefox 145.0 release notes. Those visible release highlights do not mention Matroska, so Mozilla’s tracking issue and developer-platform notice are the more direct sources for the feature details.
Which codecs can play inside an MKV?
Mozilla’s current tracking-issue summary lists these supported codec families in Matroska:

An earlier Nightly update in the same issue specifically reported AVC/H.264 and AAC playback, while noting that other codec support would be added gradually. The current list and that earlier update describe the feature’s development; neither guarantees playback of every encoding profile or every file on every operating system.
Why one MKV file may play and another may not
The .mkv extension identifies a container, not a single audio or video format. Two MKV files can contain different codecs, and Firefox must be able to decode the streams inside each one. Mozilla says Firefox relies on operating-system media libraries and codecs; availability can therefore vary by system. HEVC support, in particular, is not universal. - If Firefox does not play a file, identify the codecs used by its audio and video tracks rather than relying on the MKV extension alone.
- Check that Firefox is up to date; default-enabled Matroska support is associated with Firefox 145 and later.
- Consider whether the file is being played through regular media playback or through a different web media API. Mozilla’s launch notice establishes regular playback support, not blanket support for every playback context.
- Check whether the operating system provides the needed codec, especially for HEVC.
Mozilla’s MKV compatibility guidance is inconsistent
Mozilla Support’s compatibility table still labels .mkv “Not supported or not rendered properly.” The article was last updated January 14, 2026, but that entry conflicts with Mozilla’s tracking issue, which says Matroska support is enabled by default since Firefox 145. The available Mozilla sources do not explain why the table has not been updated, so treat that entry as inconsistent with the newer feature status rather than as a definitive statement that Firefox lacks MKV support.
