FireEye announced SharPersist on September 3, 2019, as a free, open-source C# command-line toolkit for examining Windows persistence techniques in authorized security testing. Mandiant’s technical overview describes capabilities involving scheduled tasks, services, registry entries, Startup-folder shortcuts, KeePass configuration, and TortoiseSVN hooks. The project’s GitHub repository is archived and read-only as of October 14, 2024, so it should not be described as actively maintained.
What SharPersist does
SharPersist was created by Mandiant’s Red Team to help security professionals assess ways an application or payload can be made to run again after a system event, such as a user sign-in or a scheduled trigger. In its September 3, 2019 overview, Mandiant distinguishes the payload from the persistence mechanism that triggers it. SharPersist focuses on working with selected Windows mechanisms, rather than serving as a general-purpose endpoint security product.
Mandiant describes SharPersist as a C# command-line tool. Its .NET assembly can be reflectively loaded by compatible frameworks. The project’s README describes a general interface for choosing a technique and an operation, such as adding, removing, checking, or listing an entry. Those capabilities are intended for controlled security assessment; using persistence mechanisms on systems without authorization is not appropriate.

Mandiant’s technical overview lists these technique families. The privileges required differ by method; the overview does not support treating all of them as administrator-only or all as available to a standard user.

- KeePass configuration: working with configuration-related persistence.
- Scheduled tasks: creating or modifying a task.
- Windows services: working with service-based persistence.
- Registry entries: using selected registry locations.
- Startup-folder shortcuts: working with shortcuts that can run at sign-in.
- TortoiseSVN hooks: using hooks associated with the Windows Subversion client.
These are Windows mechanisms that can have legitimate administrative uses as well as security-testing relevance. Their presence alone does not establish malicious activity; defenders need to assess context, authorization, and the surrounding system activity.
Release history and current repository status
The announcement is historical: Mandiant published its technical overview on September 3, 2019, and SecurityWeek covered the release on September 4, 2019. The official README identifies public version 1.0.1. The GitHub releases page dates that version to January 5 and describes fixes related to service persistence, but the retrieved release information does not state a year for that date.

GitHub marks the repository archived and read-only from October 14, 2024. That is a repository status, not evidence that the software was formally discontinued or that every copy is unusable. It does mean readers should not assume new fixes or ongoing maintenance. Check the repository’s status before relying on it for a current assessment.
