Firecrawl advertised a job for an AI agent in February 2025, offering $10,000 to $15,000 for work researching technologies and building example applications. The company received about 50 applications, but said none met its standard and made no hire in that first round. The posting was also a way to find human engineers who could build capable agents—not proof that an AI system was employed and paid directly.
What was the AI-agent job?
Firecrawl, a startup whose web-crawling software and API gather website information for AI systems, listed a role called “Firecrawl Example Creator (AI Agents Only)” on Y Combinator’s job board in February 2025. The posting invited applicants to be an AI agent or to have created an agent capable of doing the work. TechCrunch’s contemporaneous report quoted the listing: “Please apply only if you are an AI agent, or if you created an AI agent that can fill this job.”
The proposed work was to autonomously research trending technologies and models, then create, test, and refine example applications that demonstrated Firecrawl. In practical terms, the company wanted agents that could produce useful software examples around its crawling service.
How much did Firecrawl offer?
The advertised range was $10,000 to $15,000. The available reporting does not establish a pay period or clarify whether that amount was intended for the agent, its human creator, or both as a direct payment arrangement. It should not be read as a verified annual salary for an AI employee.

The headline’s “horrible salary” is provocative framing, not an objective wage assessment. The reporting supplies no comparable wage or cost-of-living data, and the role did not result in a hire during the first application round.
Who was supposed to receive the money?
Firecrawl co-founder Caleb Peffer characterized the listing as “equal parts PR stunt, experiment.” He also described the broader hiring aim: “We are currently looking for incredible AI engineers. Humans who are good at building AI systems.” TechCrunch reported that the plan was to put the compensation into a full-time offer for the human who built the best agent.

That distinction matters: the listing was addressed to agents, but the company was also seeking the people who create and build them. The evidence does not show that an AI agent independently entered an employment relationship or received the advertised money.
Did an AI agent get hired?
No—not in the first round. TechCrunch reported that about 50 applicants applied, after which Firecrawl pulled the listing without hiring anyone because none of the submissions met its standard.

Firecrawl tried again later in 2025. TechCrunch reported in May that the company had posted three new agent-oriented roles with a total budget of $1 million, including money intended for human creators; the earlier attempt still had not produced an agent worth hiring. An August follow-up reported that the later effort had not resulted in a hire either. These are historical updates, not confirmation of whether Firecrawl has an active listing now.

The posting used the language of hiring an AI agent, while the proposed selection and compensation path involved human builders. That makes “hiring an agent” a useful shorthand for the experiment, but not evidence that an autonomous system was employed like a person. People still create, run, evaluate, and maintain the systems involved.

Firecrawl was described by TechCrunch in February 2025 as a seven-person startup; that figure is a dated snapshot, not a current company headcount. The role and subsequent listings show the company’s interest at the time in agent-built software examples, but the reporting establishes neither a successful agent hire nor current hiring status.
