For a Fire TV Cube, the best settings depend on the Cube generation and the TV, receiver or soundbar, HDMI connection, and content connected to it. Start by checking which Cube you own, then use Amazon’s diagnostics where available instead of forcing a picture or audio format that the rest of your setup cannot play. Privacy controls are separate: each one covers a particular kind of data or use, not all data processing.
Identify your Fire TV Cube generation first
Settings and format support can vary by Cube generation and software. Amazon’s device identification page lists generation-specific capabilities, and its Fire TV help hub links to device support. Confirm your model before following a generation-specific menu path or assuming a feature is available.
Check picture output against the whole HDMI chain
A Cube, television, receiver or soundbar, HDMI connection, and the video itself all affect whether a format works. A device supporting 4K, HDR, or Dolby Vision does not mean every app or title will use it. A receiver or soundbar must also pass through the format to the TV.
Use Audio/Video Diagnostics when available
- On supported devices, open Settings > Display & Sounds > Audio/Video Diagnostics.
- Review the capabilities the tool detects through HDMI, including resolution, refresh rate, HDR, Dolby Vision, and surround formats.
- If the format you want is not detected, check the TV input, receiver or soundbar passthrough, HDMI connection, and the content’s format support before changing output settings.
Amazon says the diagnostics tool is not available on every Fire TV device. Its guidance for Dolby Vision or High Dynamic Range not working also notes a specific compatibility case: with a 4K 30 Hz Dolby Vision TV, Fire TV may stream at 1080p 60 Hz for smoother playback. If you want to change that behavior, Amazon points to the 4K 60 Hz resolution option under Display & Sounds. Treat it as a compatibility choice, not an automatic upgrade; the TV and every device in the connection path must support the selected mode.

Consider Super Resolution only on Cube (3rd Generation)
Amazon says Super Resolution is enabled by default on Fire TV Cube (3rd Generation). It enhances video below 4K on a 4K-or-higher television; Amazon says it makes no difference to 4K-or-higher content. To compare it, open Settings > Display & Audio > Display > Super Resolution and try the setting on and off with lower-resolution video. The menu path and feature are specific to the third-generation Cube and may differ on other models or software versions.
Amazon lists the third-generation Cube as supporting up to 4K Ultra HD, HDR10, HDR10+, HLG, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos. These are device capabilities, not guarantees that a particular title, app, subscription, TV, or connection will use those formats. See Amazon’s Fire TV Cube device specifications.

Diagnose sound before changing audio output
Use Settings > Display & Sounds > Audio/Video Diagnostics on devices that offer it, then review the detected audio formats. Amazon says that if the format you want is not detected, the current equipment setup cannot play it. Check that the title supports the format and that the receiver or soundbar and HDMI path can pass it through. For Dolby Atmos, some AV receivers also require height speakers.
- Amazon recommends a high-speed HDMI cable for surround-sound troubleshooting. Check the cable already in use and the capabilities of each connected device before buying another.
- Amazon says optical cables do not fully support surround sound. If the preferred audio format does not work, its troubleshooting guidance suggests lowering the audio format.
- Do not assume every Fire TV sound menu applies to the Cube. Controls and output tables documented for Fire TV Smart TVs are for televisions, not necessarily for a Fire TV Cube connected to a separate TV.
For more troubleshooting steps, see Amazon’s guidance for Dolby Atmos or surround sound not working.

Choose privacy settings by the data you want to limit
On Fire TV, Amazon lists these controls under Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings. The choices address different categories and purposes; turning one off is not a general opt-out from all collection or personalization. Amazon says the settings are device-specific.
| Setting | What turning it off does | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Device Usage Data | Opts out of processing operating-system-collected personal data for product-improvement and customized-marketing purposes. | Does not disable features such as Parental Controls or Recents, stop marketing offers, control other data used for interest-based ads, or cover processing related to Amazon services such as Prime Video. |
| Collect App Usage Data | Opts out of Amazon collecting data about third-party apps’ open and close events and usage duration. | Does not itself change other privacy controls or third-party apps’ own data practices. |
| Interest-based Ads | Asks apps using the device advertising ID not to use that ID to build advertising profiles or target interest-based ads on the device. | Does not govern all data collection or personalization by Amazon services or third-party apps. |
Amazon defines the identifier used by the last setting this way: “The advertising ID is a resettable identifier we make available to apps on certain Amazon devices for advertising and analytics purposes.” The definition and limits above are from Amazon’s Privacy Settings FAQs for Fire TV Products, Fire Tablets and Kindle E-readers. Third-party apps and Amazon services may have their own settings and privacy notices.

Mute the Cube’s microphones and manage Alexa recordings separately
Press the physical Mute button on top of the Cube to deactivate its microphones; the light turns red. This is a microphone control, not a privacy switch for app usage or device usage data. Amazon says most Alexa feature settings are managed in the Alexa app. Its Fire TV setup guide says you can hear and delete voice recordings in the Alexa app, or ask Alexa to delete the latest recording or all recordings.
