To free space on a Fire tablet, open Settings > Storage and check whether internal storage or the microSD card is full. Then archive eligible content, remove local downloads or unused apps, or troubleshoot the specific app or card. Adding a microSD card will not solve an app-install space problem on Fire OS 6 or later.
Find out what is using the space
Open Settings > Storage. Check the internal-storage categories and, if a card is installed, the SD Card Storage section. This tells you whether the problem is the tablet’s internal space, the card, or a particular category. Menu labels can vary by Fire OS version and tablet generation.
If a warning says “System” is using space, that label alone does not identify a universal cause or a guaranteed cleanup method. Avoid deleting unfamiliar files or relying on a hidden-cache fix. Amazon’s support instructions provide app cache and data controls, but do not establish that they resolve every System-storage report.

Archive content before deleting what you may need
Amazon says purchased content is saved to your account’s Cloud when removed from the device, so archiving or removing a local copy does not delete the purchase from your Amazon account. Archiving is a way to reclaim device space while retaining access to eligible content for later download.

Use Auto Archive for eligible apps
Auto Archive is optional. Amazon says it applies to non-Amazon apps used infrequently in the past 60 days; eligible apps are archived and removed from the home screen. Amazon provides a route to view archived apps and reinstall them. Check the archive list if an app you still want is no longer on the home screen. Amazon’s archive and storage instructions describe the feature and its controls.
Archive manually using the menu for your Fire OS
- Fire OS 7: Go to Settings > Storage, then select Archive Now under Free Up Space.
- Fire OS 8: Go to Settings > Storage > Internal Storage, then choose Archive Now or Free Up Space.
Follow the option shown on your tablet; the menu is not identical across versions. If archiving does not free enough space, remove local downloads or apps you no longer need.

Remove local downloads and unused apps
Downloaded videos, books, music, and other offline content can take up device space. Remove only the local copy or app you are willing to download again or stop using. For Amazon purchases, the Cloud copy remains associated with your account; other apps and their content may have different recovery options.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf you are unsure what a category contains, review it in Storage before removing anything. Do not treat clearing app data as equivalent to deleting a temporary cache: app data may include settings, sign-ins, or locally stored information.

Fix a storage problem tied to one app
If one app is malfunctioning or appears to be using unusually large space, use Amazon’s instructions for your tablet generation. Select the specific app and read the available controls before clearing data.
- 8th Generation and newer: Go to Settings > Apps & Notifications > Manage All Applications or See all apps. Select the app, open Storage, then choose Clear Data or Clear Storage; use Clear Cache separately if available.
- 4th–7th Generation: Go to Settings > Apps & Games > Manage All Applications, select the app, then use Clear Cache or Clear Data.
Clearing cache and clearing data are distinct actions in the newer-device instructions. Clearing data can remove app-specific local information, so try cache first when appropriate and be prepared to sign in or set the app up again if you clear its data. See Amazon’s app cache and data instructions for the documented paths.

When a microSD card helps—and when it does not
A microSD card can provide additional space for supported content, but Amazon says Fire tablets running Fire OS 6 and higher cannot install apps and games to microSD. If an app cannot be installed because internal storage is full, clearing internal space is the relevant fix; buying a larger card will not move that app-install requirement to the card.
Amazon lists these maximum supported card capacities by tablet generation. They are compatibility ceilings, not a recommendation to buy the largest card; confirm the generation and intended use first.
Best Value
| Fire tablet generation | Amazon-listed maximum card capacity |
|---|---|
| 5th–6th Generation | 200 GB |
| 7th Generation | 256 GB |
| 8th–9th Generation | 512 GB |
| 10th Generation and newer | 1 TB |
Amazon recommends a UHS card or, for a non-UHS card, at least Class 4. Check Amazon’s microSD guidance for compatibility and supported storage details for your device. Choose a card for the content types your tablet supports rather than assuming every file or app can be moved there.
Clean up a full card
To manage card contents, go to Settings > Storage, select the relevant category under SD Card Storage, and use Storage Manager to clean up content or move items to Internal Storage. The exact available actions depend on the content and device.

- Confirm that the card’s capacity is within the limit Amazon lists for your tablet generation and that it meets the recommended speed class.
- Check that the card is inserted correctly. If needed, unmount it through the tablet’s storage controls, remove it, and reinsert it.
- If the tablet still does not recognize it, test the card in another device or try a known-working compatible card. This helps distinguish a card problem from a tablet or compatibility issue.
Amazon’s card troubleshooting guidance includes checking insertion, reseating the card, and testing it elsewhere. Do not format a card unless you have backed up any files you need; formatting can erase its contents.
If “System” storage remains unexplained
After removing items you recognize and checking app storage, restart the tablet and check for an available system update at Settings > Device Options > System Update. An Amazon Staff forum response suggested these steps for one Fire Max 11 report; that individual response is not proof that either step fixes every unexplained System-storage warning. The forum thread documents that specific report.
