Fire tablet microSD card limits depend on the tablet’s generation: Amazon lists support from 200 GB on 5th–6th Generation models up to 1 TB on 10th Generation and newer models. Amazon recommends a UHS card, or at least Class 4 for a non-UHS card. Fire tablets support FAT32, and Fire OS 6 and higher cannot install apps or games to a microSD card.
Check your Fire tablet’s generation before choosing a card
Amazon publishes capacity limits by generation, but model-specific specifications can vary. Confirm your tablet’s product name and generation in its settings, packaging or documentation before buying; do not rely on screen size or an “HD” label alone. Maximum microSD capacity by generation
Amazon’s troubleshooting guidance gives these maximum capacities:

These are Amazon product-support limits, not results of an independent card test. For instance, Amazon’s model specifications list up to 512 GB for the Fire HD 10 (2019, 9th Generation) and up to 1 TB for several newer models. Check the exact model’s current specification, particularly for older or regional variants, rather than assuming every tablet with the same screen size has the same limit. What speed microSD card does a Fire tablet need?
Amazon advises using a UHS card or, if the card is not UHS, one rated at least Class 4. This is compatibility guidance; it does not establish that a faster-rated card will make the tablet run faster. Format and storage modes
Amazon says Fire tablets support FAT32 file systems. When you first insert a card, the tablet lets you choose portable storage or internal storage. Portable storage is removable and is the mode supported by the Kindle and Prime Video apps; internal storage is managed as part of the tablet’s storage. Can you install apps on a Fire tablet microSD card?
Not on Fire tablets running Fire OS 6 or higher: Amazon says those devices cannot install apps and games to microSD. Choosing internal storage does not override that software limitation. Kindle and Prime Video apps support portable storage only, according to Amazon’s microSD guidance; that does not mean other apps can be installed on the card.

- Identify the model and generation. Use the tablet’s settings, packaging or documentation, and verify against Amazon’s Quick Start Guides or model specifications.
- Stay within that generation’s capacity limit. Use the table above as Amazon’s generation-level guidance; verify the exact model where possible.
- Meet the speed recommendation. Choose UHS, or at least Class 4 if non-UHS. A higher advertised speed tier is not evidence of improved Fire tablet performance.
- Use FAT32 and choose the storage mode for your use. Portable storage is required for Kindle and Prime Video; do not choose internal storage expecting Fire OS 6 or later to install apps or games on the card.
Amazon says the microSD card is sold separately. Choose a compatible microSD card only after confirming your specific tablet model against Amazon’s documentation.
