To connect a Fire TV Stick to a Samsung Smart TV, plug it into an available HDMI port, connect its power using the instructions for your model, and select that same HDMI input on the TV. Then follow the on-screen prompts to connect to Wi-Fi and sign in to or register an Amazon account.
Connect the Fire TV Stick to your Samsung TV
- Plug the Stick into HDMI. Insert it into an available HDMI port on the TV and note the port label or number. A compatible HDMI input is required. Amazon’s setup instructions cover the connection and setup requirements.
- Connect power. Attach the Stick’s power cable and adapter as directed for that model. Amazon’s standard guidance is to connect the USB cable to the Stick and supplied power adapter, rather than powering the Stick from the TV’s USB port. Accessories and power arrangements can differ by generation, so use the instructions supplied with your device.
- Select the TV’s matching HDMI input. Turn on the Samsung TV and use its remote to open the source list, then choose the HDMI port where you plugged in the Stick. Samsung’s menu path and labels vary by model and country. Samsung’s device-connection guidance describes selecting the connected source.
- Finish Fire TV setup. When the Fire TV screen appears, follow its prompts to connect to Wi-Fi and sign in to an Amazon account or register one.
Choose the right Samsung HDMI source
Use the TV remote to open Source and select the HDMI number you noted. On some Samsung Smart Remote models, the route is Home > Connected Devices, followed by the HDMI input. The available labels and menu behavior can vary by model and country; Samsung’s regional guidance documents these source-selection options.
If the TV shows a different device or a blank screen, cycle through the HDMI inputs and select the one physically used by the Fire TV Stick. The Fire TV Stick does not appear as a picture until the TV is set to its input.
Power and HDMI extender questions
Does the Fire TV Stick need wall power?
The Stick needs power. Amazon’s standard setup directs users to connect its USB cable to the supplied power adapter, not the TV’s USB port. Because power instructions and included accessories may differ across generations, follow the directions for your exact model rather than assuming every Stick uses the same arrangement.

Do you need an HDMI extender?
No. An extender is optional; it can help if the Stick is difficult to fit into the TV’s HDMI port or there is limited clearance around the port. Check the package contents first, since an extender may already be included. If you need one, check connector orientation, cable length, clearance, and compatibility with your Stick and TV placement. Amazon describes the optional extender for fit issues in its Fire TV Stick setup guide.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
The TV shows no Fire TV picture
- Check that the Stick is connected to power according to its model’s instructions.
- Confirm that the TV is set to the exact HDMI port in use, using Source or Connected Devices if needed.
- If the Stick is hard to plug in or blocked by nearby connections, try an available HDMI extender.
The Stick shows a power warning or shuts down unexpectedly
Recheck the power cable and adapter against the instructions for the specific Fire TV Stick. Do not assume that a setup used for another generation applies to yours.

The image appears, but setup will not finish
Complete the Wi-Fi connection and Amazon account sign-in or registration when prompted. Both are part of the initial setup.
Can the Samsung remote control the Fire TV Stick?
Sometimes. Samsung describes universal-remote control of supported streaming devices in a supported configuration using the TV’s HDMI ARC port. This is a convenience, not a setup requirement: you can select the HDMI input with the Samsung remote and use the Fire TV remote to navigate the Stick.
