Most “fingerprint apps” don’t scan or store your fingerprint themselves. On a compatible phone, an app can ask the operating system to authenticate you with the device’s built-in fingerprint sensor; the OS performs the check and reports whether it succeeded. Camera-based fingerprint capture is a separate technology, and its test results should not be treated as a measure of built-in phone authentication.

What is a fingerprint app?

The phrase can describe two different things:

  • An app that uses built-in biometric authentication: The app requests a fingerprint check through the phone’s operating system. The service and device must support the feature, and availability varies by platform, operating-system version, sensor, and app.
  • An app that captures a fingerprint with a camera: It attempts to image a finger rather than use the phone’s integrated biometric sensor. This is a different approach with separate performance evidence.

Android’s developer security guidance recommends considering biometric authentication, including fingerprint scans, for appropriate apps. That does not mean every Android app supports it, or that a fingerprint prompt works identically across devices. Android Developers’ security checklist provides guidance for app developers.

Does an app get a copy of my fingerprint?

Not necessarily. In Apple’s Touch ID system, Apple says that enrolled fingerprint data is protected in the Secure Enclave, does not leave the device, and is not backed up to iCloud. Apple also says, “Apps can’t access Touch ID data associated with the enrolled fingerprint.” A supported app receives only the authentication result—whether Touch ID succeeded—not the fingerprint data. These statements describe Apple’s Touch ID implementation; they should not be assumed to describe every operating system, app, or third-party fingerprint product. See Apple’s Touch ID & Privacy explanation.

Are fingerprint apps safe?

A built-in fingerprint check can make it more convenient to unlock an app, but a fingerprint is not a secret password. NIST’s Digital Identity Guidelines state, “Biometric characteristics do not constitute secrets.” A fingerprint may sometimes be obtained without the person’s consent, and it cannot be changed in the way a compromised password can.

For the authentication systems within its scope, NIST advises using biometrics with a physical authenticator as part of multi-factor authentication and providing a non-biometric option. This is NIST guidance for those systems, not a universal legal rule for every consumer app. A fingerprint prompt also does not replace the app’s account protections, recovery process, or the security of the device itself. Read the app’s privacy information and check what account fallback it offers. NIST explains the context in its SP 800-63B guidance and its authenticator guidance.

What do fingerprint accuracy figures actually mean?

Performance figures depend on the system and the test. NIST SP 800-63B, fourth edition, sets biometric performance criteria for systems covered by the guidance: a false-match rate of one in 10,000 or better and a false-non-match rate below 5%, under specified testing conditions. These are criteria for systems in scope—not measured accuracy figures or guarantees for a particular phone, fingerprint sensor, or app. NIST also addresses presentation-attack detection; the figures are not a consumer ranking of fingerprint apps.

Kensington VeriMark Desktop 1.0 USB Fingerprint Reader - Windows Hello, Windows 11 Fingerprint Scanner for PC, FIDO U2F, FIDO2 (K62330WW)
  • FIDO U2F certified, and FIDO2 WebAuthn compatible for expanded authentication options, including strong single-factor (passwordless), dual, multi-factor, and Tap-and-Go support across major browsers (for services leveraging the older FIDO U2F standard, instead of using biometric authentication, Tap-and-Go allows the user to simply place their finger on the VeriMark Desktop Fingerprint Key to enable a security token experience).
  • Windows Hello certified (includes Windows Hello for Business) for seamless integration. Also compatible with additional Microsoft services including Office365, Microsoft Entra ID, Outlook, and many more. Windows ARM-based computers are currently not supported. Please check back for future updates on compatibility
  • Encrypted end-to-end security with Match-in-Sensor Fingerprint Technology combines superior biometric performance and 360° readability with anti-spoofing technology. Exceeds industry standards for false rejection rate (FRR 2%) and false acceptance rate (FAR 0.001%).
  • Long (3.9 ft./1.2m) USB Cable provides the flexibility to be placed virtually anywhere on or near the desktop.
  • Can be used to support cybersecurity measures consistent with (but not limited to) such privacy laws and regulations as GDPR, BIPA, and CCPA. Ready for use in U.S. Federal Government institutions and organizations.

Contactless camera capture must be considered separately. In a May 2020 report, NIST described testing six contactless fingerprint technologies: four smartphone-based apps and two standalone devices, using devices current around May 2019. One app reached 95% accuracy and other devices approached 90%, but results varied by task; single-finger matching was comparatively poor, at 60% to 70% for contactless devices. Those findings do not measure ordinary authentication through an integrated phone sensor. See NIST’s contactless fingerprinting study.

Can a phone camera scan my fingerprint?

Some apps have used smartphone cameras for contactless fingerprint capture, but that is not the same as using a phone’s built-in fingerprint sensor. NIST’s contactless study evaluated specific technologies and tasks; its results do not establish that any current camera-based app will work accurately or securely on your phone. Check the app’s supported devices, intended use, and privacy terms rather than inferring performance from the presence of a camera.

What happens if fingerprint recognition fails?

The available fallback depends on the phone, operating system, app, and account. The app may ask for a device passcode, an app password, or another sign-in method; it may instead require account recovery. Before relying on biometric sign-in, confirm the fallback is available and that you can use it. NIST’s guidance for systems it covers calls for a non-biometric authentication option.

What to check before enabling fingerprint sign-in

  • Confirm that both your device and the specific app support built-in fingerprint authentication.
  • Check whether biometric sign-in is optional and what the app does if it fails.
  • Review the app’s privacy terms and account-recovery process.
  • Keep the device’s primary passcode or other recovery method usable; a fingerprint is not a replacement for account security.
  • Distinguish a built-in sensor prompt from camera-based fingerprint capture when assessing an app’s claims.
