A FinFET, short for fin field-effect transistor, is a transistor whose current-carrying channel rises from the substrate as a narrow fin. Its gate controls the channel from multiple sides, giving it more control than a conventional planar transistor with a gate above a flat channel.
How a FinFET works
A field-effect transistor controls electrical current with a voltage applied to its gate. Current flows through a channel between two terminals called the source and drain; changing the gate voltage changes how readily current can pass through that channel.
In a FinFET, the channel is part of a raised semiconductor fin rather than a largely flat region. The gate sits alongside the fin and commonly controls its two sidewalls and top. Because the gate has access to multiple sides of the channel, it can exert stronger electrostatic control than a conventional planar, top-gated structure. The exact gate geometry varies by implementation.
Why use a fin-shaped channel?
The fin gives the gate more contact with the channel. Better control can help engineers reduce unwanted leakage and improve transistor performance compared with planar designs. These are design motivations and potential benefits, not guaranteed results: actual behavior depends on the device implementation and operating conditions.
FinFET vs. planar transistor vs. gate-all-around
| Architecture | Channel and gate arrangement | Key distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Planar transistor | The channel sits in a largely flat geometry, with the gate above it. | The gate controls the channel primarily from above. |
| FinFET | The channel is raised into a fin, and the gate controls multiple sides. | The gate has more contact with the channel than in a conventional planar structure. |
| Gate-all-around (GAA) | The gate surrounds the channel. | Unlike a FinFET’s multi-sided gate, the gate encloses the channel. Intel describes its RibbonFET as a GAA architecture and presents it as an architecture following FinFET; that is Intel’s technology framing, not a universal foundry roadmap. These are structural distinctions, not a numerical ranking of current products. Performance and leakage depend on the particular process and device design; the available sources do not establish a vendor-neutral numerical comparison.
What “Tri-Gate” means
Tri-Gate is Intel’s name for its three-sided gate implementation, in which the gate controls the fin’s top and two sides. FinFET is the broader device-family term; not every FinFET necessarily uses an identical gate geometry. In 2002, Intel reported 20 percent more drive current for its tri-gate design than for a planar design of comparable gate size. That is a vendor-reported comparison of that design, not a performance increase guaranteed for all FinFETs. Intel’s 2002 announcement
