To find image differences in PHP, use Imagick::compareImages() for a built-in comparison result and reconstructed diff image, or use GD to compare corresponding pixels yourself. Imagick is convenient when its extension is available; GD gives you direct control over thresholds and how to mark changed pixels.
Choose GD or Imagick
| Consideration | GD pixel loop | Imagick::compareImages() |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Uses GD functions available in your PHP build; confirm that it supports the image formats you need. See the PHP GD and Image Functions reference. | Requires the PECL Imagick extension and its ImageMagick environment. Check that both are installed where your code runs; see the PHP method reference. |
| Control | Your code defines how to compare channels, apply a threshold, count differences, and create any output image. | Select a supported metric constant; the method returns a reconstructed image and difference information. |
| Visual diff | You generate and draw the diff yourself. | ImageMagick can produce a visually annotated comparison image. |
| Dimensions and alignment | Your code must define what happens when dimensions differ and ensure corresponding content is aligned. | ImageMagick compares images with documented behavior for size differences and virtual pixels; offsets and alignment can affect the result. |
| Good fit | Small custom comparisons or applications already using GD. | Metric-based comparison and a reconstructed diff image when Imagick is available. |
Compare images with Imagick
Imagick::compareImages() accepts another image and a metric constant. It returns an array containing a reconstructed comparison image and the difference value; the method may throw ImagickException. Consult the PHP manual for the method signature and supported metrics.
ImageMagick distinguishes the annotated image—which helps locate changed areas—from the numeric metric, which summarizes difference according to the chosen measure. Use the output that answers your question: a diff image for visual inspection, a metric for a decision rule, or both. The ImageMagick comparison documentation explains the comparison operation and its options.
Compare pixels with GD
GD does not provide a single built-in image-comparison function for a custom pixel-by-pixel check. Instead, load the images, confirm dimensions, and inspect each coordinate with imagecolorat(). The PHP imagecolorat() reference documents pixel access and truecolor channel extraction; the GD function reference lists image loaders and related functions.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Load both files. For PNG files,
imagecreatefrompng()is one option. It can returnfalseon failure, so check each result before continuing. Other formats require an appropriate GD loader. See imagecreatefrompng(). - Check dimensions. Use
imagesx()and the corresponding height function. Decide whether different dimensions immediately mean “different,” or whether your application should resize, crop, or compare a defined common region. See imagesx(). - Scan matching coordinates. For each
(x, y), read both pixels withimagecolorat(). For truecolor values, extract red, green, and blue using bit shifts and masks as shown in the PHP manual. - Apply your comparison rule. For exact matching, treat any channel difference as a changed pixel. For tolerant matching, choose a per-channel threshold and count a pixel as changed only when the chosen rule is exceeded. This threshold policy is application logic, not a GD default.
- Choose an output. Return a boolean, count changed pixels, calculate a ratio, or create a new image that marks changed coordinates. GD provides image and drawing functions, but your code determines how the visual diff looks.
For example, a simple decision rule is to report “different” when at least one corresponding pixel exceeds your selected channel threshold. A more permissive rule could report “different” only when the proportion of changed pixels exceeds a chosen percentage. Neither cutoff is universal: validate the rule against the images your application actually handles.

Exact pixel equality is useful when two files are expected to have identical pixel data. It can be too strict for screenshots or images that have been recompressed, resized, or rendered differently. ImageMagick supports multiple comparison metrics and a -fuzz option that treats colors within a distance as equal, but its documentation does not prescribe a universal threshold. Pick a metric and tolerance for your use case and validate the resulting decision rule on representative inputs.

A numeric score and a visual diff serve different purposes. A score makes it possible to apply a pass/fail threshold; the diff image helps a person see where changes occur. Do not assume that one score alone tells you whether a change is meaningful.

Prevent misleading comparisons
- Different dimensions: In GD, define an explicit mismatch policy. ImageMagick documents that differently sized inputs affect comparison: the smaller image is aligned with the larger, and extra regions are treated as virtual pixels, which can influence metrics.
- Misaligned content: A one-pixel shift can create many changed pixels. ImageMagick’s default comparison is pixel-by-pixel from page offsets unless subimage search is enabled. Align images before comparing if you intend to detect content changes rather than shifts.
- Transparency: Decide whether alpha is part of equality. GD’s color APIs can expose alpha, but RGB-only extraction does not account for it. Include alpha explicitly if transparent pixels matter to your result.
- Encoding and rendering changes: Lossy compression, profiles, scaling, and rendering differences can alter pixel values. Use a suitable metric or tolerance instead of assuming exact equality is meaningful.
- Failures: Check GD loader return values and handle Imagick exceptions at the application boundary so a missing file, unsupported format, or comparison error does not become an unchecked result.
