To find where a Windows network connection appears to fail, start with ping for basic reachability, then use tracert to inspect the route or pathping to measure packet loss over repeated probes. No single result proves that every part of a connection is healthy: a ping can succeed while an app is broken, and a timeout can mean ICMP traffic is blocked rather than that the network is down.
What each command can tell you

Microsoft describes ping as “the primary TCP/IP command used to troubleshoot connectivity, reachability, and name resolution.” These command references apply to the Windows versions listed by Microsoft, including Windows 10 and Windows 11; do not assume the same commands or syntax apply on macOS or Linux.
Start with the simplest useful test

Open Command Prompt or Windows Terminal and run
ipconfigto identify the Default Gateway for the active connection.Recommended Free Tools

Test that local address with
ping <gateway-IP>, substituting the gateway address shown on your PC. A response shows that the gateway answered the IP probes; it does not confirm access beyond the local network.#1 Best Overall

Test the destination by IP address if you have a known, relevant IP, then test its hostname with
ping <host-name>. If the IP responds but the name does not, investigate name resolution. Microsoft notes that this contrast can indicate a DNS or name-resolution problem.
A timeout is ambiguous: firewalls or network policy can block ICMP echo traffic. Microsoft specifically cautions that a failed ping to a DNS server may reflect filtering rather than an unreachable DNS service. Check the relevant service instead of treating ping as a definitive outage test.

Use tracert to inspect the route
Run tracert <destination>, replacing the placeholder with a hostname or IP address. Windows sends probes with increasing time-to-live (TTL) values so that responding routers along the path can be shown in sequence. See Microsoft’s tracert command reference.

Read the output as a record of which hops responded, not a complete map of every router. Some routers do not return the messages required to appear in the output. A row of asterisks at an intermediate hop therefore does not prove the route is broken there; if later hops respond, that is direct evidence that probes continued beyond the silent hop.

Use pathping when repeated loss measurements matter
Run pathping <destination> when a quick reachability check or route listing is not enough and you need repeated observations. It discovers the route and calculates packet-loss statistics by hop or link. Microsoft’s pathping example shows a 125-second statistics computation; that is an example runtime, not a universal duration. Allow the command to finish before interpreting its statistics.
If the destination answers but an app still fails
Test the protocol and port the failing service actually uses. A successful ICMP ping does not establish that its TCP or UDP service is reachable, and a failed ping does not necessarily mean that service is unavailable. Microsoft’s TCP/IP troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the relevant application connection rather than relying on ping alone. Use an appropriate TCP or UDP test for that service and your environment.

Record the destination, the time of the failure, and the exact command output.

Note the network path and whether the issue affects one device, several devices, or only one application.

For deeper diagnosis, collect relevant traces or packet captures. Microsoft’s guidance covers network diagrams and traces and packet-loss diagnosis.

If the failure is wireless, compare the affected connection with Microsoft’s wireless connectivity troubleshooting steps.
Keep conclusions proportional to the evidence: a command can narrow down where to investigate, but a root cause is established only when the output and follow-up checks support it. The title’s “saved me hours” describes the author’s experience; it is not a measured or independently verified time saving.
