If your Roku is connected to your home network, you can find its local IP address without a remote by checking the router’s connected-device or DHCP list. If your phone and Roku are already on the same network, the Roku mobile app may also find it. But if the Roku is not connected to Wi-Fi or Ethernet, it has no current local network IP address to look up; reconnect it first.
Choose the method that matches your situation
| Situation | Best next step | What it requires |
|---|---|---|
| Roku is online; remote is missing | Check the router’s connected-device or DHCP list. | Access to the router or ISP gateway administration page. |
| Roku is online; phone is on the same network | Try device discovery in the Roku mobile app. | Local app control must be available, and the phone and Roku must be able to communicate locally. |
| Roku is online, but app discovery is blocked | Check the router list, or restore app control with on-device settings if you have a compatible remote. | Router access or menu access. |
| Roku is offline or has no Wi-Fi credentials | Reconnect it to a network before looking for a current IP address. | Wi-Fi setup access or Ethernet on a supported model. |
Find the address in the Roku mobile app
This is the simplest option when the Roku is already connected and your phone can communicate with it. Roku requires the phone or tablet and Roku device to be on the same wireless network for local app control. If the Roku uses Ethernet, it needs to receive an address in the same local range as the phone or tablet. See Roku’s mobile app connection guidance.
- Connect your phone to the same home network as the Roku.
- Open the official Roku mobile app and select the Roku in the Devices list.
- If the device appears, use the app’s device controls to check its network details, or use the router method below to read the assigned address.
On iPhone or iPad, allow the Roku app to access the local network. Temporarily disconnect a phone VPN if discovery fails. The app’s Connect manually option requires you to already know the Roku IP address, so it cannot reveal an unknown address.

This is the practical remote-free fallback when the Roku is online but the app cannot find it. Sign in to your router or ISP gateway and open the page commonly labeled Connected devices, Clients, or DHCP leases. Locate the Roku entry and read its assigned private IP address. Router screens vary, so consult the router maker or ISP for the exact menu path; Roku does not specify a universal router interface. Roku’s internet setup guidance explains that the device joins a network through a router: connect a Roku device to the internet.

The entry may not be clearly labeled “Roku.” If you cannot identify it, review the device or MAC-address details in the router list. Another way to narrow it down is to disconnect and reconnect the Roku, then look for the entry whose connection status or lease changes. Avoid assuming an unfamiliar device is the Roku based on its name alone.
If there is no Wi-Fi connection, reconnect the Roku first
A local IP address is assigned when the Roku joins a local network. If it is disconnected from both Wi-Fi and Ethernet, a router cannot show a current active address for it. Reconnect through the on-screen network setup using your Wi-Fi credentials, or use Ethernet if your particular model supports it. Some Roku players support a wired connection, including certain models using a USB Ethernet adapter; compatibility depends on the model. Roku also describes using a mobile hotspot during setup, but streaming or updates can consume cellular data. See Roku’s internet connection instructions and its setup and connection guidance.

Without a remote, the app can help with setup only if the Roku is already reachable on the same local network and app control is enabled. If it is not online and the app cannot control it, you will need another way to navigate setup, such as a compatible replacement remote. Check the exact Roku model before choosing one; a remote restores menu access but does not itself discover an IP address.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy an online Roku may not appear in the app
- Different networks or subnets: Confirm that the phone and Roku are on the same local network. A guest Wi-Fi network or separate subnet can prevent local discovery.
- Router isolation: Client or device isolation may block communication between devices even when they use the same Wi-Fi name.
- VPN or local-network permission: Turn off the phone’s VPN temporarily and, on iOS, allow local-network access for the Roku app.
- Wired Roku, wireless phone: Ethernet and Wi-Fi can work together for local control, but both devices must still be on the same local network and able to communicate.
- External control disabled: Roku says disabling external control prevents app control. If that setting is off, you may need a remote to reach the Roku settings and re-enable it. See Roku’s app-control guidance.
- Roku is offline: Reconnect it to Wi-Fi or supported Ethernet before trying discovery again.
Local IP address versus internet address
The address shown in a router’s client list is the Roku’s private address on your home network. It is used for local communication, such as app discovery. It is not the public IP address your internet connection presents to websites, and it will not make an offline Roku reachable. For the Roku app’s manual connection feature, use the local address assigned by your router.
