To check reported 5G coverage at a U.S. address, open the FCC National Broadband Map, choose Mobile Broadband, search the location, and compare providers using the same speed threshold and coverage setting. The map shows modeled service areas—not exact tower locations—and its shading does not guarantee indoor reception or a particular speed.

How to check 5G coverage at your address

  1. Open the FCC National Broadband Map and search your address. If it is not listed, the FCC says you can search for a town and state or navigate the map to the location.

  2. Switch to Mobile Broadband. The map opens to fixed broadband by default, so the mobile view is necessary to see reported cellular coverage.

  3. Select a provider, then choose one of the map’s 5G speed thresholds: 7 Mbps download / 1 Mbps upload or 35 Mbps download / 3 Mbps upload. These are modeled minimum service levels, not speed-test results or promises of the speed you will get.

Does a 5G coverage map show towers near you?

No. The FCC’s mobile coverage layers are provider-reported areas created with propagation modeling. They show where service is modeled as available for a particular technology, speed threshold, signal strength, and environment; they do not establish the precise location of a cell site or how far away a tower is. A colored area on a coverage map is not evidence that a tower is nearby.

If you are searching for “5G towers near me,” the FCC map can help answer the related question of whether a provider reports 5G coverage in your area. Finding the exact location of a physical cell site is a separate task, and this map is not a tower locator.

What the two 5G speed thresholds mean

FCC map layer Modeled minimum download / upload How to use it
Lower 5G threshold 7 Mbps / 1 Mbps Compare reported coverage where the model meets this lower threshold.
Higher 5G threshold 35 Mbps / 3 Mbps Compare reported coverage where the model meets this higher threshold.

The figures describe modeled service levels in the FCC map; they are not nationwide coverage statistics or a guarantee that your phone will reach those speeds. To make a useful comparison, keep the provider, threshold, environment, and data date consistent. Comparing one provider’s lower-threshold outdoor layer with another provider’s higher-threshold in-vehicle layer would not be like for like.

Why map coverage may differ from your experience

The FCC says its coverage polygons are based on propagation modeling. As the agency explains, “a user’s actual, on-the-ground experience may vary due to factors such as the end-user device used to connect to the network, cell site capacity, and terrain.” The map models outdoor or in-vehicle service; it does not include indoor mobile coverage.

  • Phone and service: A 5G-capable phone and qualifying service are required, and devices do not all support the same 5G signals or carrier bands. Check whether your phone supports the carrier’s 5G bands and confirm its compatibility requirements with the carrier.
  • Location and surroundings: Terrain, buildings, and other obstructions can affect reception. A signal available outside may not reach indoors reliably.
  • Network conditions: Cell-site capacity, traffic, and outages can change what a user experiences at a particular time.
  • Other conditions: T-Mobile’s own map says its outdoor coverage approximation does not guarantee service availability and lists signal strength, equipment, obstructions, weather, traffic, and outages among factors that may affect service.

A carrier’s map is the carrier’s estimate, not independent confirmation that your device will work at a particular spot. No one provider can be identified as the best choice everywhere from these maps alone.

What to do if the FCC map seems wrong

The FCC has a mobile coverage challenge process using its Mobile Speed Test app. Follow the current instructions on the FCC mobile challenge page. For a test to qualify, it must be taken outdoors or in a moving vehicle; an indoor test is invalid for this process.

The FCC checks valid test results against the provider’s claimed coverage and requires tests to be taken between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. local time. It aggregates valid results monthly. Enough failed tests—below the relevant 4G or 5G threshold, in an area and at different times—can create a challenge to a provider’s reported coverage. A provider has 60 days to respond; if a challenge is conceded or upheld, the provider has 30 days to update its coverage data.

Quick Recap

Quick checklist for comparing coverage

  • Confirm you are viewing Mobile Broadband, not fixed broadband.
  • Use the same 5G download/upload threshold for every provider.
  • Compare the same modeled environment: outdoor stationary or in-vehicle.
  • Note the FCC map’s data-as-of date and check the carrier’s own map for its terms.
  • Consider whether you need outdoor availability, indoor use, or a particular local speed; the map does not establish indoor coverage or guarantee your actual speed.
