If you need reported figures in a spreadsheet, use SEC XBRL data or datasets instead—but keep the filing reference, because structured data are not a substitute for the original document’s layout, footnotes, or exact presentation.
Choose the right output before automating
“Financial statement” can mean either a document or the facts inside it. Those require different workflows. This guide focuses on U.S. public-company filings; private bank statements and filings in other countries involve different portals, permissions, and formats.
- Need the original filing’s presentation, footnotes, or an archival copy? Retrieve the filing PDF from an official issuer or regulatory source and retain its filing identity.
- Need figures for Excel, analysis, or repeatable data processing? Use XBRL facts or an SEC financial-statement dataset where its coverage fits. Structured data can be easier to process, but may not preserve the PDF’s presentation.
SEC financial-statement datasets describe data as filed and caution that records can contain redundancies, inconsistencies, or discrepancies relative to other publication formats. When a discrepancy matters, check the original filing. See the SEC Financial Statement Data Sets documentation.

Build a repeatable PDF download workflow
For a small, known issuer list, an issuer-hosted filings page may expose direct PDF links. A recurring workflow should not assume that a PDF will remain at the same position or under the same display label. Identify the filing by issuer, form, and reporting period or filing date, and save enough context to trace every local copy back to its source.

- Define the scope. Specify the country, issuer universe, form types (for example, 10-K or 10-Q), and periods you need. The concrete source guidance here concerns U.S. public companies.
- Resolve each filing. Use the issuer’s filings page for a limited known set, or SEC EDGAR resources for regulatory filing discovery and structured facts. Confirm the company, form, and period or filing date rather than selecting a result solely by page position.
- Use an official, verified PDF link. Save the source URL and retrieval timestamp with the file. Record the issuer, form, filing date or period, and filing identifier when available. These are traceability practices, not fields that the cited sources require.
- Validate the result. Check that the response succeeded, the saved file is actually a PDF, and the document corresponds to the intended filing. Keep a checksum or equivalent integrity record if you need to detect later changes to a local copy.
- Log and recover deliberately. Record missing links, changed pages, and transient failures. Retry transient network errors with a limit and delay; do not silently treat an error page or an outdated filing as a successful download.
Python example for a verified direct PDF URL
Once you have verified a direct PDF link from the official source, this small script downloads it, checks the HTTP response and PDF signature, and records basic provenance. Replace the example values with the filing you identified. It does not discover filings or bypass a site’s access controls.

The example intentionally accepts a direct PDF URL rather than guessing an undocumented SEC download endpoint. If you automate discovery, build it against the current official documentation and preserve the filing identity returned by that source.
When structured data are a better fit
If your destination is Excel or a database rather than a document archive, use an appropriate SEC XBRL resource or dataset. The SEC documentation describes company submissions and extracted XBRL resources, and its financial-statement datasets include selected forms and information from XBRL filings. Check the documented coverage before designing a pipeline around a particular dataset.

- Preserve the filing reference alongside facts so a reviewer can find the underlying filing.
- Account for amendments and multiple reporting periods rather than assuming one record per company and period.
- Interpret the “as filed” caveat literally: dataset contents may be redundant or inconsistent, and may differ from other publication formats.
- Check the original filing when presentation, footnotes, or a discrepancy affects your analysis.
The SEC EDGAR API Development Toolkit also describes filer-management and submission functions. It discusses bearer tokens issued through Filer Management for those filer-facing functions and advises secure handling. Those credentials are not a general prerequisite for downloading public filing PDFs; do not put credentials into scripts unless the operation actually requires authorized filer access. Troubleshooting common failures
The downloaded file is HTML, not a PDF
The URL may lead to a filing page, a redirect, a consent screen, or an error response rather than a PDF. Confirm the final source link in the browser or official page, then validate the response status and PDF signature before saving it as a filing.

The issuer page may have added a new period, changed its layout, or replaced a link. Identify filings using issuer, form, and period or filing date, and log page or link changes for review instead of relying on fixed row order or a display label.
An API request asks for credentials
Check whether you are using a filer-management or submission operation rather than a public read resource. The SEC toolkit’s token guidance applies to its filer-facing functions; public filing retrieval is a separate need. Use only credentials authorized for the task and store them securely.

Structured values disagree with the PDF
SEC dataset records are “as filed” and may be redundant, inconsistent, or discrepant with other publication formats. Retain the filing reference and compare the original filing when the difference matters; do not assume the extracted fact is a transcription of the document’s full presentation.
A third-party API becomes unavailable or changes limits
For filings.xbrl.org, the documentation reserves the possibility of changing access, rate limits, or withdrawing the API. Avoid making it an irreplaceable dependency unless you have an appropriate fallback and have assessed the service’s continuity for your use case.
