Yes, if you want a large action RPG built around party combat, character relationships, and open-zone exploration; less so if you want a tightly paced story or the intended first chapter. Square Enix describes Final Fantasy VII Rebirth as a standalone game for newcomers, but it is also the second entry in a three-game remake project. New to the series and keen to follow the story in order? Start with Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade. Comfortable joining a continuing story and more interested in exploration and combat? Rebirth is a reasonable place to begin.
Can you start Final Fantasy VII Rebirth without playing Remake?
Square Enix says Rebirth is a standalone game that welcomes fans and newcomers, and its FAQ says playing Remake first is not required for basic understanding. That is useful guidance, but “standalone” does not mean Rebirth is the first chapter or a complete retelling of the story. Square Enix identifies it as the second game in a three-title remake project.
The first game, Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, follows the party’s escape from Midgar. Playing it first introduces the central characters and gives the events of Rebirth more context. So the choice depends on what you mean by “can I start here?” You can, according to the publisher; for narrative continuity, beginning with Remake Intergrade is the more satisfying route.
What kind of game is Rebirth?
Rebirth takes the story beyond Midgar into larger explorable zones. Alongside the main story, there are side quests, combat challenges, minigames, and Queen’s Blood, a card game. This range of activities is central to the experience rather than a small extra on the side: it gives you room to explore and spend more time with the party, but can also pull attention away from the main plot.

Combat is a particular strength. GameSpot’s 2024 review praised its refined combat and party synergy, while The Guardian’s review highlighted compelling combat and character moments. If you enjoy action-oriented battles that reward coordinating party members and using their abilities together, Rebirth has a strong foundation to build on.
What are the main drawbacks for newcomers?
Optional activities can interrupt the story
Both GameSpot and The Guardian raised concerns about pacing. The Guardian noted that minigames and side quests can obstruct story momentum; GameSpot praised the combat while criticizing pacing and some open-zone activities. The result is a game whose abundance can feel like a strength or a drag, depending on how much you enjoy taking detours.

- Immerse yourself in the city of Midgar like never before, with improved textures, lighting, and background environments
- Players can switch between two game modes: o "Graphics Mode" prioritises 4K high-resolution graphics o "Performance Mode" prioritises smooth action at 60 frames per second
- Capture and share your memorable moments from the game with a fully customisable “Photo Mode”
- Players can enjoy immersive battles by using the DualSense PlayStation 5 controller with its haptic feedback integration
The open zones are not equally compelling for everyone
Some side quests create opportunities for character interaction, so it would be unfair to write off the optional content as mere filler. But the open zones and activities are not uniformly engaging, and reviewers found that some stretches can feel repetitive or distracting. If you prefer to keep moving through the main plot, you can focus on story quests and skip activities that do not appeal to you; you do not need to treat every checklist item as an obligation.

| What matters most to you | Suggested starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Following the remake project’s story and character introductions in order | Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade | It is the first game and covers the party’s escape from Midgar. |
| Getting into Rebirth’s exploration and combat without requiring the first game | Final Fantasy VII Rebirth | Square Enix says it is standalone and does not require Remake for basic understanding. |
That distinction is the clearest way to resolve the confusing line-up for someone who has never played Final Fantasy VII. The publisher’s “not required” answer is about basic understanding; choosing the first game is an editorial recommendation for a better-ordered story, not a claim that Rebirth cannot be followed on its own.

Which platforms can you play Rebirth on?
Square Enix’s official materials list Final Fantasy VII Rebirth for PlayStation 5, PC, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X|S. Availability on those platforms does not establish that performance, features, or editions are identical; the cited platform announcement does not provide a basis for recommending one version over another.

Rebirth is worth considering if you want a substantial action RPG with party-focused combat, character moments, and plenty to explore—and you are willing to accept that optional activities can interrupt the story. For a newcomer who values narrative continuity above all, play Remake Intergrade first. For one who is happy to join the second part of a continuing story and wants Rebirth’s exploration and combat now, going straight in is a defensible choice.
