FileGator is a free, MIT-licensed, self-hosted web app for managing files and folders. It lets administrators create users with different roles, permissions, and home folders, while supporting local storage and services such as Amazon S3, Dropbox, DigitalOcean Spaces, and Azure Blob. You can deploy it with Docker or a PHP build; a safe setup requires PHP 8.1 or later, the php-zip extension, and careful separation of public and private files.
What is FileGator?
FileGator is a web-based file manager that you install on a server you control. Rather than being a hosted cloud-drive account, it provides a browser interface for managing files in configured storage locations. Its multi-user design supports separate home folders and configurable roles and permissions, making it suitable for sharing files with colleagues, collecting student submissions or field data, and managing remote storage. The project also lists cloud backup, CDN management, S3 management, FTP/SFTP replacement, and remote zipping and downloading among its use cases. FileGator project documentation
What can users do with it?
Depending on their permissions, users can upload, download, copy, move, rename, edit, create, delete, and preview files, as well as zip and unzip archives. Multiple files or folders can be downloaded where allowed. Uploads include drag-and-drop, a progress display, pause and resume, and chunking intended to help large uploads work within server limits. These features do not establish a particular maximum file size or upload speed; those depend on the server and configuration. FileGator feature list
Can FileGator connect to S3 or other storage?
Yes. The project lists Local, FTP, Amazon S3, Dropbox, DigitalOcean Spaces, and Azure Blob storage, along with additional adapters available through Flysystem. FileGator also offers choices for how user authentication and sessions are handled: user data can be stored in JSON, a database, or WordPress, while session adapters include native file storage, PDO, Redis, MongoDB, and Memcached. Availability of a particular backend does not by itself configure access; you still need to set up the relevant credentials and server-side integration. FileGator feature list

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How do you install FileGator?
The official installation guide describes Docker and a precompiled PHP distribution. It also identifies one-click deployment through Hostinger. Choose an approach based on whether you want to manage the server setup yourself or use the named hosting deployment route; Hostinger’s documentation says its option avoids manual server configuration. Check the runtime requirements
For a PHP deployment, FileGator’s guide lists PHP 8.1 or later and the php-zip extension. Node 12–22 is specified for development and build contexts, rather than as a requirement for every end-user installation. Official installation guide

Docker quick start
The guide documents the official filegator/filegator image and a quick start that maps port 8080. Its example uses the default credentials admin/admin123. Treat those as setup credentials only: change the admin password immediately before allowing real users or data into the deployment. Consult the current guide for the exact command and any configuration needed for your environment. Official installation guide
Keep private files outside the web root
FileGator’s installation guide says that dist is the only directory that should be exposed through the web server. The repository and private directories must have the read and write access the web process needs, but should not be made publicly reachable. Configure the web root accordingly and check filesystem ownership and permissions before going live. Official installation guide

Is FileGator secure?
Security depends on both the software version and deployment. The project changelog lists version 7.16.5 dated 2026-09-27. Recent entries include a path-traversal fix, LDAP session-ID regeneration and per-request user revalidation, batch-download archive protection, and a fix preventing uploads from reaching another user’s temporary files. Keep the installation updated and review the changelog when upgrading. FileGator changelog
The documented exposure boundary is also important: only dist should be web-accessible, while private directories need appropriate—not public—permissions. Change the default admin password in any real installation. The project’s official sources do not establish an independent security audit or third-party performance benchmark, so do not treat either as verified.

Is FileGator a Google Drive alternative?
It can serve a different role: FileGator is software you host and administer, with storage and user access configured on your server. That gives you control over deployment and supported storage backends, but also makes you responsible for hosting, updates, permissions, and safe configuration. The available information does not support a direct feature-for-feature comparison with Google Drive or a claim that FileGator is a drop-in replacement. Compare the services against your needs for administration, collaboration, storage location, maintenance, and total hosting and storage cost.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.

Who should consider FileGator?
- Consider it if you need a self-hosted browser-based file portal for several users, configurable permissions, or access to local and supported remote storage.
- Plan for administration if you can manage PHP or Docker deployment, filesystem permissions, credentials, and security updates.
- Compare alternatives if you need a managed consumer drive, or if your decision depends on independently verified throughput, user capacity, or security-audit status; those are not established by the project sources cited here.
