Yes—file-change notifications can expose activity even when an observing process cannot read the affected files. Depending on the operating system and monitored location, the signal may include event timing, file paths or names, and event types. Researchers demonstrated Linux keystroke-timing inference and website detection, Android file-event monitoring involving WhatsApp media, and Windows path disclosure that can reveal Firefox website names. These are distinct local attack paths, not proof that an attacker can read protected file contents or recover every character typed.
What a file-notification side channel reveals
Operating systems notify applications when files or directories change. A process that can observe those notifications may learn metadata about activity without being able to open the affected files. The useful signal varies: event timing can expose behavioral patterns, while a path or filename can disclose more directly what an application is doing.
The Graz University of Technology research team emphasizes that “the contents of these files are unknown” to the observer in the demonstrated attacks. The distinction matters: a notification may reveal that an event happened, when it happened, or where it happened, without revealing the protected file’s contents. The team’s research disclosure and its 2026 ACM CCS paper describe controlled demonstrations, not confirmed real-world incidents.

| Platform and mechanism | Observer’s position in the demonstration | Signal and demonstrated inference | Mitigation status described by researchers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Linux: file notifications on watched directories | A local process can watch a readable parent directory; particular demonstrations have different requirements. | Events and timing. Demonstrations covered keypress timing, SSH input timing, and website fingerprinting; the signal does not identify each key. | A kernel mitigation suppresses some notifications on special files but is described as partial. |
Android: FileObserver |
The demonstrated app lacked additional permissions to list another app’s media folder. | Filenames, locations, and event timing in the WhatsApp media example could indicate media type and whether content was sent, received, or deleted. | The disclosure page lists no Android fix; it does not establish coverage across vendors, OS versions, or messaging apps. |
Windows: ReadDirectoryChangesW on a drive root |
A local process monitors the drive root; reported paths included files belonging to other users. | File paths could expose Firefox website names. The researchers reported a different result for Edge; browser results should not be treated as interchangeable. | Microsoft documents access-check enhancements. The researchers say the relevant setting is disabled by default. |
Linux: timing can reveal patterns, not a transcript
Keyboard and SSH timing
In the Linux demonstration, watching /dev/input exposed keypress timing, not which key was pressed. The concern is inference from the intervals between events, not direct recovery of a typed sentence. Monitoring /dev/pts can reveal input events that update terminal text, but the researchers specifically report that typing a sudo password with terminal feedback disabled does not produce the relevant notifications. The result therefore should not be generalized to every keystroke or password prompt.

Reported Linux classification results
In the Graz team’s 2026 evaluation, local inter-keystroke timing classification achieved 93.1%–100% F1 across seven users. Their remote SSH timing experiment reported 100% F1. For website fingerprinting, the team reported 87.9% F1 for a top-100-site task in an open-world setting. These are results for the paper’s particular setup, participants, and evaluation sets—not guaranteed accuracy on arbitrary computers, users, or browsing sessions.
The paper also reports 0.21% maximum CPU overhead and temporal resolution ranging from 0.2 ms to 11.5 ms in its tested notification monitoring. Those measurements describe the study’s monitoring setup, not a universal cost or resolution for every system.

A separate graphical-session demonstration
On KDE Plasma 6 with Wayland, researchers demonstrated monitoring access to /usr/bin/pkexec to anticipate a polkit authentication prompt, then placing a fake password window over it. This is a UI-redress scenario that assumes the observing process is running as the same user in the graphical session. It is not the same threat model as a process monitoring events across user accounts.

The Android demonstration uses FileObserver. The research disclosure says that, in the demonstrated case, an unprivileged app unable to list another app’s media folder through the ordinary app-visible storage view could still receive file notifications and filenames there. In the WhatsApp example, names, locations, and event timing could indicate media type and whether content was sent, received, or deleted.

This finding concerns notification metadata in a specific demonstration. It does not establish that any Android app can browse every other app’s private files, nor does the source establish results for every Android vendor, OS version, or messaging application.
Windows: paths can disclose more than timing
The researchers report that monitoring a drive root with ReadDirectoryChangesW exposed full paths for system file events, including paths associated with other users. For Firefox, relevant storage paths could reveal website names directly; that is different from inferring a site statistically from event timing. In the paper’s top-1,000-site website-visit detection evaluation, the team reported 97.8% F1. This is a study result, not a promise of the same performance on every Windows device or browsing session.

The disclosure reports weaker website detection for Edge than for Firefox, so the Firefox result should not be generalized to other browsers. Microsoft’s documentation describes access-check enhancements intended to prevent unauthorized file-path disclosure through directory change notifications. The researchers identify EnforceDirectoryChangeNotificationPermissionCheck as a mitigation and say it is disabled by default. Administrators should consult Microsoft’s current documentation for applicable updates, policy or registry instructions, and compatibility requirements before changing an enterprise deployment.
What the findings mean for security and privacy
These are local-observer attacks
The demonstrations require code to run on the target system. Some involve an unprivileged process or an app without additional permissions for the demonstrated observation, but that does not make them remote attacks that work merely because a user visits a website or receives a message. The Linux graphical-session example has the narrower same-user condition described above.

Research demonstrations are not evidence of widespread exploitation
The authors state, “We are unaware of any such case.” That is the research team’s statement about its knowledge at publication time; it is not proof that exploitation has never happened. The reported results are controlled demonstrations, and the available sources do not establish active exploitation in the wild.
Mitigation status and practical steps
Linux
The researchers identify CVE-2025-68788 as a partial mitigation that suppresses access/modify notifications on special files. They list fixed kernel lines including 5.10.248, 5.15.198, 6.1.160, 6.6.120, 6.12.65, and 6.18.3. They explicitly characterize the mitigation as partial, not a complete resolution. Check the kernel and security advisories for your Linux distribution, since vendors may backport fixes to kernels with different version numbers. The researchers’ own wording is: “While it’s not fully mitigated, the most severe issues are mitigated.”
Windows
Review Microsoft’s access-check guidance and the applicable Windows updates and configuration instructions for the systems you manage. Because the researchers describe the setting as disabled by default and Microsoft documents compatibility requirements, do not assume that a setting or deployment procedure applies identically to every Windows edition or enterprise environment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAndroid and macOS
The disclosure page lists no Android or macOS fix. That is not evidence that every device is vulnerable or that a fix is unavailable from every vendor; current patch status and behavior by vendor, OS version, and app are not established by the cited sources. The paper also reports the least leakage on macOS among the systems it studied, but observed application starts and interactions involving globally readable files, so macOS should not be described as unaffected.
