Rogue apps are malicious or privacy-invasive apps, or apps distributed through deceptive channels. They can arrive through unofficial downloads, but they can also slip into Apple’s and Google’s official stores. Store screening reduces risk; it does not guarantee an app is safe. The most useful defenses are to verify who published an app, question permissions that do not fit its purpose, keep software updated, and respond carefully if you suspect someone is monitoring your phone.

What makes an app “rogue”?

“Rogue app” is a plain-language label, not a single technical category. It can describe software designed to steal information or compromise an account, an app that collects more data than users reasonably expect, or a deceptive app distributed through a misleading listing or unofficial source. NIST describes malicious apps as software placed in repositories or sideloaded onto devices; the risk is not limited to sideloading. NIST’s Mobile Threat Catalogue explains the threat in that broader distribution context.

Some apps impersonate familiar utilities, games, VPNs, or photo editors. Meta reported that it identified more than 400 malicious Android and iOS apps targeting Facebook credentials in 2022; the apps it identified were listed in Google Play and Apple’s App Store. That is Meta’s research count, not an estimate of how common malicious apps are across either store. Meta describes the apps and their tactics, including prompts that trick people into entering social-media login details.

Where can rogue apps come from?

Apps may be downloaded from unofficial websites or stores, installed by sideloading, or obtained through an official store listing. Official stores screen submissions, but screening is not a guarantee. The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center said on March 31, 2026, that “Official apps stores scan for malicious content, lowering the risk of malware or malicious code on devices.” The distinction matters: lower risk is not zero risk. The FBI IC3 advisory also warns about privacy and permission risks, and clarifies that the risks it discusses are not unique to apps developed in any one country.

Store enforcement figures show that review systems reject and remove problematic submissions, but they do not establish the overall likelihood that a particular app is unsafe. Apple reported that in 2024 it rejected 400,000 app submissions for privacy violations and 320,000 for copying other apps, spam, or misleading users. Those are Apple’s reported enforcement categories for its own store, and should not be directly compared with Meta’s count of apps targeting Facebook credentials. Apple’s App Store enforcement report gives its figures and methodology context.

How to assess an app before installing it

No single clue proves an app is safe or malicious. A familiar icon, a high star rating, or an official-store badge is not conclusive: Meta reported fake reviews and apps that evaded detection, while Apple reports ongoing review and enforcement. Use several checks together.

  • SECURE CONNECTIONS – Just a few easy clicks, and we'll automatically protect your info on public Wi‑Fi, every time you connect.

  • MORE THAN ANTIVIRUS – Scam protection, identity monitoring, VPN, web protection, and antivirus work together to protect you, all in one place.
  • Use an official store when possible. Avoid installing app files from unfamiliar websites or links. Official distribution lowers some risks, though it does not eliminate them.
  • Check the publisher and purpose. Look for a developer that can be independently associated with the service or product. Be cautious when a listing’s name, description, developer, and claimed function do not line up.
  • Read permission requests in context. Ask whether each request is necessary for the app’s stated function. A feature that requires access to contacts, location, photos, microphone, or other data deserves scrutiny if the reason is unclear.
  • Be wary of credential prompts. Do not enter a social-media password into an app merely because it promises a theme, utility, or other enhancement. Confirm that sign-in is happening through a legitimate service flow.
  • Treat ratings as one signal, not proof. Ratings and reviews can be manipulated. Read the substance of reviews and check whether the app and developer have a credible track record.
  • Be cautious with free VPNs and streaming-device offers. The FBI has warned that some app components, including proxy SDKs, may route traffic through a user’s device. Avoid unfamiliar offers that promise free access in exchange for installing software, particularly when the app’s function or network behavior is unclear. The FBI’s 2026 alert on residential proxy networks explains this risk.

Why permissions and updates matter

Permission choices affect what an app can access. The FBI IC3 warns that, after permissions are granted, some apps may persistently collect data across a device. Access to a contact list can also expose information about people who never installed the app. Before accepting a permission, consider whether the app needs it for the feature you are using; if it does not, deny it or disable that access in your phone’s settings.

Keep the operating system and apps updated. Updates can address security issues and improve protections, although installing updates cannot make a deceptive app trustworthy. Review data-sharing settings and turn off collection or sharing you do not need. These steps reduce exposure; no checklist can guarantee protection from every harmful app.

What to do if you suspect a rogue app

If the concern is a suspicious app account or unwanted data collection, use a trusted device to review the account involved, change its password, and enable stronger sign-in protections where available. Check the app’s permissions and remove access that is not needed. If you choose to uninstall an app, use your device’s normal app-management settings and review related account activity. Do not assume that deleting an app alone reverses information already collected or secures an account whose credentials were entered into it.

If you think an abusive partner or another person may be monitoring your phone, treat this as a personal-safety issue rather than an ordinary malware cleanup. The FTC warns that seeking help or making changes on a monitored device could alert the person. Use a different, safer device to contact an advocate or law enforcement, and consider making a safety plan before changing or replacing anything. Document evidence if doing so is safe; do not rush to remove suspected stalkerware or reset the phone if that could increase danger. The FTC also cautions that restoring old apps from a backup may reinstall stalkerware. The FTC’s stalkerware guidance covers safer ways to assess and respond.

Could battery drain or high data use mean stalkerware?

Unexpected battery drain or increased data use can be reasons to look more closely, but neither symptom by itself proves stalkerware is present. Many ordinary causes can affect battery life and data consumption. The FTC includes these as questions to consider, not as a diagnosis. If monitoring is possible in an abuse situation, prioritize a safe device and specialist support over investigating on the phone that may be watched.
