To check an image’s provenance, look for two different kinds of evidence: signed Content Credentials that describe an image’s origin and edits, and a SynthID watermark that can indicate creation or editing by Google AI. Gemini, Google Photos, and Google’s About this image feature can surface some of that evidence. None is a universal authenticity test: a positive result has a defined scope, while no result does not prove an image is genuine.
What image provenance can—and cannot—tell you
Provenance is information about where an image came from and what happened to it along the way. Depending on the system, it may record a creator, the tools used, or edits made. That can help answer whether an image has a documented history or whether a particular AI system contributed to it.
It is not the same as deciding whether an image depicts a real event accurately. A provenance record is evidence about origin and edits, not a universal truth detector. The result is also bounded by the systems that created, preserved, and checked the evidence.
1. C2PA Content Credentials: check the documented history
C2PA is an industry standard for provenance metadata. Content Credentials can contain signed information about who or what created an image and which edits were made. Participating tools can verify those signatures, and Google’s About this image feature may extract C2PA metadata to show how an image was created or edited. Google Photos says later edits can add to existing C2PA information.
#1 Best Overall
- The easiest way to scan photos and documents. Supports 3x5, 4x6, 5x7, and 8x10 in sizes photo scanning but also letter and A4 size paper. Optical Resolution is up to 600 dpi ( PS: two setting: 300dpi/ 600dpi).
- Fast and easy, 2 seconds for one 4x6 photo and 5 seconds for one 8x10 size photo@300dpi. You can easily convert about 1000 photos to digitize files in one afternoon and share with your family or friends.
- More efficient than a flatbed scanner. Just insert the photos one by one and then scan. This makes ePhoto much more efficient than a flatbed scanner.
- Powerful Image Enhancement functions included. Quickly enhance and restore old faded images with a click of the mouse.
When Content Credentials are useful
They can provide a readable chain-of-custody record when the tools in an image’s workflow preserve and sign the credential and the verifier can read it. The record may help distinguish an image’s documented edits from claims made about it elsewhere.
What a missing credential means
If a credential is absent, that does not establish that the image is authentic or untouched. A credential may not have been created, may not have survived the workflow, or may not be visible to the verifier being used. Treat it as inconclusive rather than as evidence that an image is real.

2. SynthID: look for Google AI’s watermark
Google DeepMind’s SynthID embeds an imperceptible signal in media generated or edited by Google AI systems. It is designed to remain detectable without changing the visible appearance. Google has extended the technology across image, audio, text, and video, and announced SynthID Detector on May 20, 2025.

How to interpret a positive result
Google’s Gemini Help documentation says that if a SynthID watermark is detected, all or part of the image or video was created or edited by Google’s AI models. That makes a positive result evidence of Google AI involvement within the documented scope; it does not mean every pixel came from Google AI.

How to interpret no result
No detected SynthID watermark does not prove that an image is authentic or that AI was not involved. SynthID is tied to Google’s systems, so it is not a check for every AI generator. A result also depends on whether the relevant signal remains detectable.
3. Verification interfaces: use the evidence available to you
Gemini, Google Photos, and Google’s About this image feature provide user-facing ways to inspect provenance evidence. Gemini can check uploaded images, videos, and audio for SynthID and can inspect Content Credentials. About this image may surface C2PA information; Google Photos says later edits can add to existing C2PA information.

Checking media in Gemini
- Upload the image, video, or audio you want to check in Gemini.
- Ask Gemini to check the media for SynthID or inspect its Content Credentials.
- Read the result as evidence within the system’s coverage—not as a blanket judgment that the media is true, false, or wholly AI-generated.
Google’s current Gemini Help documentation gives an approximate quota of 10 image checks, 10 video checks with up to 5 minutes total, and 10 audio checks with up to 3 hours total in a rolling 24-hour window. Limits and supported formats can change; consult Google’s current help documentation before relying on a specific quota or format.

How the three approaches compare
Content Credentials and SynthID answer different provenance questions. Credentials describe a signed record of origin and edits; SynthID checks for a signal associated with Google AI. Verification interfaces make some of that evidence easier to inspect, but they do not expand what the underlying evidence can establish.

| Approach | Coverage | Durability | Interoperability | What a user gets |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| C2PA Content Credentials | Images with credentials created by participating tools; the record can describe origin and edits. | Metadata-based; usefulness depends on credentials surviving the workflow and being signed. | An industry standard that participating tools can verify. | A record of documented origin and edits when a supported verifier can read it. |
| SynthID | Media generated or edited by Google AI systems, across image, audio, text, and video. | An imperceptible embedded watermark designed to remain detectable without changing visible appearance. | Evidence specific to Google AI’s documented scope; it is not a universal AI detector. | A positive result can indicate Google AI created or edited all or part of the media. |
| Verification interfaces | Evidence supported by the individual interface: Gemini checks uploads for SynthID and can inspect Content Credentials; About this image may extract C2PA metadata. | Depends on the underlying credential or watermark. | Depends on each interface’s support for the evidence being checked. | A user-facing way to inspect available provenance evidence. |
A practical way to assess a suspicious image
- Keep the original file. Preserve it when possible, rather than relying only on a screenshot or a copy that may have lost metadata.
- Check for Content Credentials. Use a verifier or interface that supports C2PA, and read what the record says about origin and edits.
- Check for SynthID when Google AI may be involved. Use Gemini’s verification workflow for supported media and interpret a positive finding within Google’s stated scope.
- Compare the evidence. A signed credential and a watermark are different signals. Consider whether the result actually addresses the claim being made about the image.
- For high-stakes decisions, use more than one signal. Provenance tools can contribute evidence, but a result from one system cannot settle every question about an image.
Why a provenance check is not a verdict
OpenAI describes provenance as a layered approach that combines open standards such as C2PA, durable watermarking signals such as SynthID, and verification tooling. The practical implication is that no single check should carry more weight than its scope supports: credentials depend on preservation and verifier support, while a watermark result identifies only the systems it was designed to signal.
