Licensed football games kept appearing on PlayStation 2 long after the console had become a previous-generation system. The clearest late examples are FIFA Soccer 13, with PS2 release records in September 2012, and FIFA 14, with regional PS2 records in September 2013. Those dates show how unusually long the PS2’s release tail was; they do not, by themselves, explain why publishers continued making the games.
Which late PS2 football games are documented?
Two successive FIFA releases make the timeline concrete. GameFAQs’ PS2 release records list FIFA Soccer 13 in the United States on September 25, 2012, and Europe on September 28, 2012. Its FIFA 14 record lists a US date of September 24, 2013, and selected European editions dated September 26, 2013. These are regional records, not a single worldwide launch date.

How was FIFA still coming out on PS2 in 2013?
The dates are the striking part: a PS2 edition of FIFA 14 was recorded in September 2013, while the PlayStation Blog’s September 22, 2013 release roundup discussed FIFA 14 and Pro Evolution Soccer 14 as current football releases. The post also said its weekly list included “a few classic PS2 games.” That is useful contemporary context for the console’s lingering release presence, but it does not establish a complete list of PS2 launches or the exact regional PS2 release date of PES 2014. The evidence supports a late release timeline, not a definitive business explanation. It does not establish whether publishers kept producing PS2 versions because of sales, installed base, development costs, or another factor. Those explanations should be treated as hypotheses unless supported by separate evidence.

What does “late PS2 game” mean here?
It means a game with a recorded PS2 release date well into the period when the console was no longer the newest PlayStation platform—not proof that it was the final PS2 game. The FIFA records document specific regional dates and physical editions. The PlayStation Blog roundup places FIFA and PES in a contemporary release conversation, but its reference to classic PS2 games does not verify PES 2014’s exact PS2 release timing by region. So these examples demonstrate a long tail, not a reliable “last PS2 game” ranking.
