If an FFmpeg stream to YouTube Live keeps disconnecting, first identify whether the break is in the input, encoder, local network, internet uplink, or YouTube ingest. “Indian broadband” alone does not identify the cause. Check the FFmpeg log and YouTube stream-health messages, measure sustained upload under the same conditions, then lower the stream load or test the connection path before changing recovery settings.

Start by finding out what disconnected

A disconnection can originate at several points: FFmpeg may lose its input, the encoder or host may fail, the local Wi-Fi or router may interrupt traffic, the internet route may become unstable, or YouTube ingest may report a problem. The country and the word “broadband” do not establish which one happened.

Before changing settings, save the FFmpeg output around the break and note its timestamp. Also record the exact command with the stream key removed, your FFmpeg version and build, whether the input is a file or a network source, the output protocol, and the message shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Do not share a stream key: anyone who has it may be able to publish to your channel.

Check whether the connection can sustain the stream

A speed-test peak, or the upload speed advertised for a plan, does not prove that the connection can hold a live upload steadily for hours. Test upload performance in conditions that resemble the actual stream, and monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages while running a representative test. YouTube advises choosing a quality that is reliable for your internet connection and testing before going live: YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

Lower the load and test again

If the upload varies or stream health shows instability, reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate, then test again. YouTube’s H.264 guidance lists these example ingest bitrates:

Stream format Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps

These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not a measurement of Indian broadband performance or a guarantee that a particular connection can sustain the rate continuously. Choose a target your tested connection can actually hold; a lower, stable stream is generally more useful than a higher-quality stream that repeatedly drops.

Verify the YouTube encoder settings

Check the settings in the command that produces the output sent to YouTube. YouTube’s current guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 encoders. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed 4 seconds. RTMPS encrypts data into and through Google’s servers, and YouTube recommends it. Match the bitrate guidance to the resolution, frame rate, and codec you actually use rather than assuming one bitrate fits every stream.

Test with representative audio and motion: a static image or silent section may not reveal the same problems as the real program. Watch Live Control Room for stream-health warnings and messages during the test and the event.

Separate Wi-Fi trouble from an upstream problem

If the streaming computer is on Wi-Fi, try a wired Ethernet connection as a diagnostic comparison. If the stream stabilizes on Ethernet, investigate the wireless link, router placement, interference, or local congestion. A cable cannot repair an ISP route, congestion beyond the router, a YouTube ingest issue, or an encoder failure; it is a way to narrow down the fault, not a guaranteed fix.

If wired and wireless tests both fail, compare timestamps, FFmpeg logs, and YouTube health messages. If possible, run a controlled test over a separate internet connection. A failure that occurs on one access connection but not another is useful evidence when contacting the provider; it does not by itself prove a country-wide or ISP-wide outage.

Do not confuse HTTP reconnect options with RTMP recovery

FFmpeg options apply to the next input or output, and their position in the command matters. The FFmpeg command-line documentation explains option scope. Reconnect options documented for the HTTP protocol apply in HTTP contexts; they are not universal switches for reconnecting an RTMP publish. The FFmpeg protocol documentation describes protocol-specific options. Adding an HTTP reconnect flag to an RTMP output should not be treated as a fix for a dropped YouTube publish.

Consider FIFO recovery only after checking your FFmpeg build

FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer offers a separate approach for handling network-output failures, with options for attempting recovery and waiting before retrying. It requires deliberate configuration; it is not a guarantee that a YouTube event will continue seamlessly or resume at exactly the frame where it stopped. Depending on configuration and the failure, buffering or dropped data may affect the output.

  1. Check whether your installed build supports the FIFO muxer and inspect its options with ffmpeg -h muxer=fifo, where supported.
  2. Read the documentation for the exact recovery options available in that build. The FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation describes its network-output recovery behavior.
  3. Test the exact command and a controlled interruption outside an important live event. Confirm what YouTube displays and whether the session remains usable; do not assume that a successful reconnect means uninterrupted playback.

FFmpeg versions and builds can differ, so do not paste a generic recovery command into a production stream without verifying the option syntax and behavior for your installation.

Escalate with evidence if the cause remains unclear

If upload capacity appears stable and the encoder follows YouTube’s guidance, use the time of the failure, FFmpeg log, stream-health messages, and results from wired or alternate-connection tests to narrow down the issue. Give those details to your ISP if the evidence points to the access connection or route, or to YouTube support if the ingest-side messages point there. There is no basis to diagnose an outage or a particular RTMP fault from “Indian broadband” alone.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to loop uploaded recordings on YouTube rather than keep an FFmpeg process running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos, not camera video, and streams to YouTube only.
