FFmpeg is the better-documented choice for a repeatable YouTube Live loop: it lets you specify the input, looping, codecs, stream mapping, and output URL in a script. VLC can also transcode and stream, but the available official guidance does not establish a current, end-to-end VLC recipe for looping a video to YouTube Live. Neither tool guarantees an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast or automatic recovery. For Indian music videos, confirm you have the necessary rights before streaming; the language or availability of a song on YouTube does not grant rebroadcast permission.
FFmpeg vs VLC: which should you use?
| Decision | FFmpeg | VLC |
|---|---|---|
| Working style | Command line; suitable for explicit, repeatable settings and scripting. | GUI-oriented player with streaming and transcoding workflows. |
| Evidence for this task | Official documentation covers media input, filtering, transcoding, output URLs, and an infinite-loop input example. That example is not a complete YouTube Live recipe. | Official VideoLAN material establishes streaming and transcoding capability, but the detailed page located covers a specific FFmpeg hardware-encoder workflow—not a current YouTube Live looping walkthrough. |
| Control | Direct control over input/output options, stream selection, and encoding settings; syntax and option order matter. | Interactive workflow may suit GUI users, but verify the installed version’s endpoint, codec, and looping controls. |
| Long-run reliability | No uninterrupted uptime or automatic recovery is established. Process supervision, network resilience, and recovery need separate planning. | No uninterrupted uptime or automatic recovery is established. Test and monitor the workflow. |
Choose FFmpeg if you are comfortable with a terminal and want a documented, repeatable configuration. Consider VLC if you prefer a GUI and are willing to verify its exact controls in your installed version. This is a documentation-based comparison, not a benchmark or a claim that either tool was tested head-to-head.
What you need before sending a loop to YouTube Live
- A video file you are authorized to broadcast, plus an account and live event configured in YouTube Live Control Room.
- The event’s server URL and stream key. YouTube treats the key like a password; keep it private and reset it if compromised.
- An encoder that can send to the chosen endpoint, and a reliable upload connection with headroom above the selected bitrate.
- A test run using representative audio and motion. YouTube says to test before going live; check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages.
YouTube recommends RTMPS (RTMP over TLS/SSL). Get the correct URL from Live Control Room; the interface may show ordinary RTMP by default. YouTube’s general encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR). The actual codec and settings available depend on your encoder and chosen protocol.

| Video format | YouTube-listed minimum | YouTube-listed recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not guaranteed performance targets. Select settings for your actual resolution and frame rate, and ensure your available upload bandwidth can sustain the outgoing stream. YouTube recommends stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps; for 5.1 audio, its guidance gives 48 kHz and 384 Kbps. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the current guidance.
How to loop a video with FFmpeg and send it to YouTube Live
FFmpeg options are position-sensitive: options generally apply to the next input or output. The following is a starting pattern, not a guaranteed one-size-fits-all command. Check the options supported by your installed FFmpeg build, confirm YouTube’s current endpoint and requirements, and test before relying on it.

- Create the YouTube event. In Live Control Room, create or select the event and copy its server URL and stream key. Prefer the RTMPS URL if the encoder supports it. Treat the key as a password.
- Prepare a private command. Replace
video.mp4with your file and the example endpoint with the server URL plus stream key supplied for your event. Do not publish a command containing your key in a screenshot, log, or public script repository. - Start with a looped input. FFmpeg documents an infinite input-loop option; a command pattern for a file input is
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "video.mp4" -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 5M -maxrate 5M -bufsize 10M -g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -f flv "RTMPS_URL_WITH_STREAM_KEY". Here,-stream_loop -1requests an infinite loop,-rereads at native rate, and the output options set H.264 video, CBR-style rate control, a keyframe interval of 60 frames, and AAC audio. At 30 fps, 60 frames is two seconds; adjust-gif your frame rate differs. The example’s 5 Mbps video bitrate corresponds to YouTube’s listed 1080p30 minimum, not its recommended bitrate, and is not a universal setting. Match bitrate, resolution, frame rate, keyframes, and protocol to your event and bandwidth. If the input’s audio/video layout or your FFmpeg build differs, revise the command accordingly. - Check the preview before going live. Wait for YouTube to receive the feed, inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages, and confirm the picture and audio are correct. Then start the broadcast through YouTube’s event controls.
- Monitor the process and event. A loop option repeats the input while the process runs; it does not ensure the process, network, or YouTube session will remain connected. Keep logs private if they could expose the stream key, and test your restart and recovery plan.
FFmpeg’s official command-line and full documentation explain its input, filter, and output behavior; consult the documentation for the exact options supported by your installed version. The command above is a practical starting point, not an official complete YouTube recipe.

Can VLC stream a looping video to YouTube Live?
VLC has streaming and transcoding output capability, so it can be a candidate for sending media to a live endpoint. However, the official VideoLAN material available for this comparison documents a specific FFmpeg hardware-encoder configuration, not a complete current set of steps or menu labels for looping a file to YouTube Live. Do not assume a particular loop control, RTMPS workflow, or reconnect behavior applies to every VLC release.

- In the VLC version you have installed, verify that its streaming output workflow supports your YouTube server URL, stream key, required protocol, and selected codecs.
- Check the version-specific documentation or interface for a repeat/loop option and verify whether it repeats the media as a stream source rather than only affecting local playback.
- Configure compatible video, audio, bitrate, and keyframe settings; send a test stream and check the Live Control Room preview and health messages before starting the event.
- Observe a full repeat cycle and test what happens after a network interruption or process exit. The available documentation does not establish automatic recovery or guaranteed 24/7 operation.
If those controls are unclear in your version, FFmpeg is the more explicit, documented starting point for this job. VLC may still suit a GUI-based workflow, but verify its behavior instead of relying on assumed menu names or loop semantics.
Music rights and YouTube Live rules for Indian videos
Whether the video is a bhajan, kirtan, Gurbani, Hindi song, or another Indian music recording, its origin and language do not establish permission to rebroadcast it. YouTube’s livestream terms say providers must have the necessary rights to exploit live content worldwide, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public-performance licenses), and other royalty participants. Make sure your permissions cover the livestream and consider the archived copy as well. Read YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions.

A video being available on YouTube, or being usable for personal listening, does not by itself grant livestream rights. Use recordings and visuals for which you have the relevant permissions; if you are unsure, resolve licensing before broadcasting.
Testing, recovery, and common failures
YouTube advises testing with representative audio and motion, checking the Live Control Room preview, monitoring stream-health messages, and confirming viewers can access the event. A stream that works for a short test is not proof of uninterrupted long-run operation.

| Symptom | Possible cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube receives no signal | Wrong server URL or stream key, unsupported protocol, or encoder not sending. | Re-copy the event’s current endpoint and key from Live Control Room, confirm the selected protocol, and check the encoder’s output/log. Reset the key if it may have been exposed. |
| Preview appears but video or audio is wrong | Codec, stream selection, resolution, frame rate, or audio settings do not match the source or event. | Inspect the source streams and encoder configuration; test again with representative content and review YouTube’s stream-health messages. |
| Connection drops or stream ends | Network loss, process exit, or a YouTube session ending; neither tool is documented here as guaranteeing recovery. | Check network stability and process logs, then test how your setup resumes. Do not assume restarting the encoder automatically restores the same live event. |
| Video plays once instead of repeating | The input loop option is absent, misapplied, or not supported as expected by the installed tool/version. | For FFmpeg, confirm the loop option is placed with the input and test beyond the end of one full file. For VLC, verify the version-specific streaming loop behavior rather than assuming a local playback setting repeats the broadcast. |
| Audio or video stutters | Insufficient upload capacity or encoding settings that exceed the available system/network resources. | Compare actual stream settings with available bandwidth, lower the load if needed, and run another representative test while watching stream health. |
