Final Fantasy VII: Revelation is the announced final game in the Remake trilogy, but no confirmed plot detail says Cloud will literally wake from a coma or experience a specific “rude awakening.” The hook is better understood as a question: what does Cloud still not understand about his past, and how will the finale handle the mysteries the trilogy has added?
What “a rude awakening” means for Cloud—and what it doesn’t
The available creator interviews do not confirm a particular awakening, breakdown, or revelation for Cloud. The phrase is an interpretation, not a spoiler. What is established is that the remake trilogy has introduced mysteries and story differences alongside the broad arc of the 1997 original, and that Revelation is intended to conclude that trilogy.
The subtitle has been described as pointing toward hidden truths, but director Naoki Hamaguchi has not disclosed how the story resolves those threads. That makes the central question—what Cloud still does not understand about his own past—a useful way to frame expectations, not a promise about what the game will reveal.
Where Revelation fits in the story
Revelation follows Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth as the concluding installment of the remake trilogy. Producer Yoshinori Kitase and Hamaguchi describe the trilogy as retaining the original game’s main narrative arc while changing some details and adding mysteries.

One major difference involves Zack. The Inven Global interview summarizes him as alive in an alternate world, while the mainline version of the original story had him die. That summary is not a full explanation of how the timelines work, and the creators have not disclosed how the strands will conclude.

The ending remains undisclosed
In an Inven Global interview published September 10, 2026, Hamaguchi declined to reveal the ending: “Since the game isn’t out yet, I can’t reveal details about the story or the ending, but I believe we have included everything we wanted to convey.” He also said that whether players take the conclusion at face value or interpret it as open-ended is for them to judge after playing. He did not promise that every question would receive one definitive answer.

Zack has a larger role, but a party invitation is unconfirmed
Hamaguchi said: “In ‘FF7 Revelation,’ Zack grows as a character, so I can say that players will experience something on an even grander scale regarding Zack compared to the previous game.” That points to a more substantial Zack experience than in Rebirth; it does not confirm that he joins Cloud’s main party.

Release date and platforms
As reported on October 7, 2026, GamesRadar lists Final Fantasy VII: Revelation for April 8, 2027, with simultaneous launches on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch 2. The earlier Inven Global interview described the release window more generally as spring 2027. Release dates, platforms, and edition details can change, so check current official listings before buying or making plans.

FITS lets characters take different combat roles
FITS is described in interviews as a job-style system that lets characters use different combat roles. Battle director Teruki Endo said the team wanted to balance the available classes so players would be encouraged to experiment. Highwind traversal and a more vertical world
Hamaguchi has described expanded world traversal, including the Highwind, greater verticality, diving from the airship, and flying chocobos. He said the aim was to make some travel less frustrating. These are development statements about the intended design, not independent findings about performance or how enjoyable exploration feels in practice.
Optional activities have more activity-specific rewards
Hamaguchi said the team wanted the connection between optional activities and their rewards to be clearer: battle-focused rewards should come from battle, and a new Queen’s Blood card from Queen’s Blood. The stated goal is to let players skip activities they do not want without missing rewards tied to unrelated play.

A promised Sephiroth showdown and Omnislash homage
In a PC Gamer interview published October 2, 2026, Hamaguchi previewed a Sephiroth fight as “a very extravagant, all-out battle that will far and above surpass what was in Remake and Rebirth in what I believe will be a very satisfying encounter.” He also referenced an homage to Omnislash. This is the director’s expectation for the encounter, not a tested comparison of the final game.

Revelation is the third part of a continuing trilogy, and the interviews describe its story in relation to events and mysteries introduced in Remake and Rebirth. Playing the preceding entries is the clearest way to follow those threads. The reporting does not establish that they are technically required, or that a recap will or will not be included.
What is not confirmed yet
- A literal Cloud awakening, breakdown, or specific revelation.
- The exact ending and how every mystery or timeline question is resolved.
- Whether Zack joins Cloud’s main party.
- Final performance, balance, or traversal quality in the released game.
- A complete platform-by-platform edition and price comparison.
RPG Site also reported planned story DLC windows of winter 2027 and spring 2028. Hamaguchi said details had not been planned out and that the team’s priority was the base game; those windows and the DLC’s scope should therefore be treated as provisional.
Collector’s Edition details are a separate, unverified purchase question
Nintendo Wire reported a $349.99 Collector’s Edition described as exclusive to the Square Enix Store, with a mini soundtrack CD, art book, steelbook, promo card, story expansion pack, digital or in-game items, and a Cloud, Zack, and Sephiroth statue. The report also mentions a Japanese bundle containing all three games and additional pieces.
