Naoki Hamaguchi reportedly argued inside Square Enix for a physical edition of FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION, citing fan demand and his own interest in physical media. Square Enix has announced physical editions, but none of the listed console formats is a complete, ready-to-play copy contained entirely on the disc or card: PS5 and Xbox copies require downloads, while Switch 2 uses a Game-Key Card that downloads the game at first launch.
Why Hamaguchi pushed for a physical release
Hamaguchi, director of the Final Fantasy VII Remake series, reportedly made the case within Square Enix for offering a physical version. Tech4Gamers, reporting on an interview with Radio Times, quoted him saying: “I used my position to put forth an argument for the physical version as much as possible.” Tech4Gamers’ report linked his argument to both his personal interest in physical media and demand from fans.
That supports saying Hamaguchi advocated for the option; it does not establish that he alone decided which editions Square Enix would release. The company’s Japanese announcement lists both physical and digital editions. It describes FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION as the concluding installment of the Final Fantasy VII Remake series and sets its release for April 8, 2027. Square Enix Japan’s announcement lists PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam, and Epic Games Store.

Will FF7 Revelation have a physical disc?
Yes, Square Enix lists physical console editions, including PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. But “physical” describes the format being sold, not a guarantee that all game data is on the disc or that the game can be installed and played without an internet connection. Square Enix’s product pages specify additional downloads, with different details by platform.

| Platform and physical format | What Square Enix says is needed |
|---|---|
| PS5 physical edition | An internet connection is required to download additional game data before play, according to the North American Square Enix Store listing. |
| Xbox Series X|S physical edition | The UK Square Enix Store listing says an internet download is required. |
| Nintendo Switch 2 Game-Key Card | The UK listing says the first launch downloads the game and requires at least 130 GB of available storage. |
Is the full game on the disc or card?
For PS5 and Xbox, the official listings say additional game data must be downloaded; they do not say the disc contains the complete playable game. The Switch 2 edition is explicitly a Game-Key Card rather than a cartridge containing the full game: the first launch downloads it. In practical terms, plan on a download for any of these physical editions.
Hamaguchi’s reported explanation for the download-enabled disc approach was that fitting the game onto the selected disc capacity would have required compromises to fidelity and quality. GamingBolt reported those comments on September 10, 2026. Read GamingBolt’s report. This is the reported rationale, not a claim that Square Enix has published a complete technical breakdown of the disc contents.

What to know before choosing a platform
Internet access and storage
For PS5 and Xbox physical copies, the store pages require an internet connection or download, but the pages cited here do not state a final install size. Do not assume the Switch 2 storage figure applies to those versions. For Switch 2, Square Enix specifies at least 130 GB of free storage for the first-launch download; that is a minimum free-space requirement, not a stated final download size.
Edition contents vary by region
The North American Square Enix Store describes a Deluxe Edition with a physical game, soundtrack, artbook, and SteelBook. The UK listing describes a Collector’s Edition with collectibles. Those regional product descriptions are not proof that every market or retailer will offer the same bundle, so check the local listing for contents and availability.

Digital alternatives
Square Enix’s Japanese platform announcement also lists digital availability for PS5, Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam, and Epic Games Store. A digital purchase avoids relying on a physical disc or Game-Key Card, but it does not remove the need to download the game. The announcement confirms platforms and formats; it does not establish final post-launch download sizes.
