In a Node.js application, choose ordinary configuration for settings that describe how a service should operate; choose a feature flag for a runtime decision about releasing, rolling out, experimenting with, or selectively enabling behavior. Both can be stored or evaluated through similar mechanisms—their purpose and change pattern, not whether a value is a Boolean or lives in a file, define the difference.

What distinguishes a feature flag from a configuration toggle?

Configuration options customize or operate an application: a service port, deployment-specific endpoint, or stable setting shared by an instance are typical examples. A feature flag controls application behavior at runtime, often so a team can manage a release or target a particular user or request context. OpenFeature describes the basic pattern as “an if/else statement that can be controlled at runtime” (OpenFeature introductory documentation).

The labels can be confusing. “Configuration toggle” may mean a setting that turns behavior on or off, but a Boolean value is not automatically a feature flag. A static environment-level switch may be ordinary configuration; a remotely managed flag can still be poorly designed if it has no clear owner, safe fallback, or removal plan.

A 2020 study comparing feature flags with configuration options examines differences in decision owners, documentation, dependencies, interactions, and testing needs. Its findings support treating the concepts as distinct even when their implementation overlaps (2020 ICSE-SEIP study). The study also records an anonymous practitioner’s wish for “a clear separation between feature flags and configuration flags”; it is a participant comment, not a universal rule.

When should a Node.js application use each?

Use Best fit Example
Ordinary configuration A stable operational or customization value, often set per deployment or service instance. Service port or deployment endpoint.
Feature flag A release or behavior decision that may change at runtime, vary by context, or support staged rollout or experimentation. Gradually enabling a new route or exposing unfinished work to internal users.
Both Operational details remain configuration; a flag selects between already configured behaviors during a controlled change. Keep database connection details in configuration and use a flag to select implementation paths during a migration.

OpenFeature documents staged releases, experimentation, and context-sensitive choices as feature-flag use cases (OpenFeature introductory documentation). In a 2018 guide, LaunchDarkly similarly recommends using flags selectively where runtime or context-sensitive control is useful rather than moving all configuration data into a flag system (LaunchDarkly guide). That is vendor-associated guidance, not independent proof that one architecture suits every application.

What a production flag system needs beyond a Boolean

A production flag is a decision with an owner, evaluation context, fallback behavior, and lifecycle—not just a variable named enabled. Consider these questions before introducing one:

  • Purpose and ownership: Is this for a release, rollout, experiment, or operational customization? Who decides when it changes?
  • Change scope and cadence: Must it change without redeploying, vary by user or request, or is one environment-level value enough?
  • Evaluation and failure behavior: Where does evaluation happen, what happens before the provider is ready or if it errors, and is the default safe?
  • Operational controls: Do you need change events, environment controls, management interfaces, hooks, logs, or shutdown handling?
  • Testing and maintenance: Which enabled/disabled combinations need coverage, and who owns metadata and retirement?
  • Integration and dependency: Will a provider-neutral API help preserve the option to change backends, and do the SDK and provider support your Node.js runtime?

OpenFeature separates evaluation from the provider that supplies flag behavior. A provider can wrap a vendor SDK, call a custom REST API, or parse local data. If no provider is registered, the API returns the default supplied to the evaluation call; that behavior makes an explicit, safe fallback essential rather than optional (OpenFeature introduction; OpenFeature provider concepts).

Implementing feature flags in Node.js with OpenFeature

The current OpenFeature server SDK reference lists Node.js 18 or later and documents typed evaluation methods with caller-supplied fallback values. It also describes targeting, hooks, logging, domains, eventing, transaction-context propagation, tracking, and shutdown (OpenFeature Node.js server SDK). These are SDK-documented capabilities; how they work in practice depends on the selected provider.

The project’s Express walkthrough uses a flagd provider and demonstrates changing a flag value at runtime. That tutorial lists Node.js 16 or later, whereas the current server SDK reference lists Node.js 18 or later. For new work, use the current SDK requirement and verify compatibility with the chosen provider. The walkthrough also notes that its flag configuration format is specific to that provider (OpenFeature flagd Node.js walkthrough).

  1. Define the flag: Record why it exists, its owner, its default, and the condition for removing it. A practitioner study published as a 2019 arXiv preprint identifies practices across management, initialization, implementation, and cleanup (Practitioner study on feature-flag practices).
  2. Choose evaluation context: Decide whether the rule needs user or request information, and pass only the context required for targeting. OpenFeature supports dynamic context and transaction propagation; context should not be treated as harmless metadata (OpenFeature Node.js server SDK).
  3. Register a provider: Select a vendor SDK, custom service, or local-data provider, then follow that provider’s readiness and error-handling guidance (OpenFeature provider concepts).
  4. Set and test fallbacks: Supply an explicit default for each evaluation. Test both enabled and disabled paths, as well as the behavior when the provider cannot supply a value (OpenFeature Node.js server SDK).
  5. Observe and retire: Monitor changes using the provider’s available facilities, and remove temporary flags once their rollout or experiment is complete. OpenFeature documents events and hooks that can support integrations; the exact controls depend on the provider (OpenFeature Node.js server SDK; Practitioner study).

Why flag lifecycle and testing matter

Temporary flags can become permanent decision points if nobody owns their cleanup. The 2019 practitioner preprint reports survey coverage of 38 companies and identifies 17 practices across management, initialization, implementation, and cleanup. Those figures describe that study’s scope; they are not a representative estimate of all software teams (Practitioner study on feature-flag practices).

Each active flag can create additional behavior paths to reason about and test. Record its purpose, default, owner, and retirement condition when introducing it; test the relevant outcomes; and remove the flag when its job is done. A flag platform does not make that maintenance automatic.

How to decide for a new Node.js setting

  1. Ask what the value controls. If it describes the service’s operating environment or stable customization, use ordinary configuration. If it controls a release or context-sensitive behavior, consider a feature flag.
  2. Ask how it must change. If an environment-level value changed through deployment is sufficient, a flag platform may add needless operational complexity. If the value needs runtime updates or gradual targeting, a flag is a stronger fit.
  3. Specify safe behavior first. Decide what the application should do when the flag is absent, the provider is unavailable, or evaluation fails; then encode and test that fallback.
  4. Set boundaries. Keep credentials and connection details in an appropriate configuration mechanism. Use a flag only for the behavior choice that benefits from controlled runtime change.
  5. Assign lifecycle ownership. Before rollout, name the owner and removal condition so temporary decisions do not accumulate.

OpenFeature documentation and SDK requirements are current as of October 4, 2026; runtime requirements and provider capabilities can change. The academic comparison dates to 2020 and the practitioner preprint to 2019, so they inform distinctions and lifecycle practices rather than current vendor rankings.
