The Flat Display Mounting Interface (FDMI) is VESA’s family of standards for the physical mounting interfaces used by flat displays and compatible stands, brackets, and other mounting equipment. It is commonly called the VESA mount standard or Mounting Interface Standard (MIS). To check whether a display and mount fit, match the display’s hole pattern and placement to a pattern the mount supports, then confirm the mount’s load rating and follow both products’ installation instructions.
What FDMI covers
VESA describes FDMI as standards for flat-display mounting interfaces and the corresponding interface mounting pads, wall-mount brackets, and other mounting apparatus. Its overview covers displays from 102 mm (4 inches) to 2286 mm (90 inches) diagonally and desktop, wall, overhead, mobile, and specialty mounting applications. That is the overview’s scope; it does not mean every display in that size range uses the same interface. VESA standards overview
In everyday use, “VESA pattern” usually means the spacing of the mounting holes on the back of a display. Patterns may be square or rectangular. Compatibility also depends on where the pattern sits on the display, not just the spacing between holes. VESA FDMI overview VESA FAQ

How to find a display’s mounting pattern
- Check the manual or specification sheet. Look for a mounting pattern or VESA measurement listed in millimeters. Eaton: How to find a VESA pattern
- Measure if the pattern is not listed. Locate the mounting holes and measure from the center of one hole to the center of the next, both horizontally and vertically. - Compare with the mount’s documentation. Confirm that it supports the measured pattern, the display’s weight, and the intended location and orientation. Check the display’s installation instructions for any requirements that affect fit.
What to verify before mounting
- Hole pattern and placement: The mount must support the display’s pattern, and the interface must align with the display’s mounting points.
- Supported load: Check the mount’s stated capacity against the display’s weight. A matching hole pattern alone does not establish that the mount can safely support the display.
- Intended use: A desk arm, wall bracket, ceiling mount, or mobile mount may have different application and clearance requirements. Choose a model designed for the planned installation.
- Hardware and clearance: Follow the specific display and mount instructions for screws, screw length, spacers, and clearance. These details are not universal; do not assume that a screw or spacer that fits one display is appropriate for another.
VESA’s FAQ addresses whether there is a standard for the wall-mount bracket hole; for a particular installation, use the display manual, mount documentation, and applicable FDMI specification rather than treating a general overview as a complete compatibility chart. VESA FAQ
