FastSendDatagramThreshold is a real Windows registry value associated with AFD, the networking component used by Winsock. Older documentation describes it as a threshold that can affect how Windows sends UDP datagrams. It is not a proven gaming-ping tweak or a general internet-speed setting, and there is no verified best value for current Windows PCs. Unless an application vendor or measured UDP workload calls for it, leave it unchanged.

What FastSendDatagramThreshold does

The value is associated with the AFD service parameters at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesAFDParameters. It is a REG_DWORD expressed in bytes. In older Windows networking descriptions, the threshold determines which send path is used for outbound UDP datagrams based on their size. A fast I/O path was described for datagrams below the threshold, with larger datagrams handled differently.

That description is historical, not a guarantee about every current Windows build. The key may exist while the value does not; an absent value is not automatically a problem and may mean Windows uses its built-in behavior. Creating it just to match a tweak guide does not establish that a modern Windows installation will use it as older documentation describes.

UDP datagrams are connectionless and do not provide TCP-style delivery guarantees. The threshold does not make UDP reliable or set the size of the network packets an application sends. Microsoft’s Winsock documentation describes datagram sockets as connectionless and unreliable.

What the historical recommendations mean

The clearest Microsoft example is an archived workaround for a particular Windows Media Server UDP streaming problem. It identifies the AFD registry path and suggests values such as 1500 or 2048 bytes for that scenario; it is not a recommendation for ordinary browsing or gaming. The archived Microsoft article is old and workload-specific.

Older technical material reports 1024 bytes as a historical baseline or default, describing fast I/O for smaller datagrams and different handling for larger ones. This does not verify a universal effective default on Windows 10, Windows 11, or current Windows Server releases. The archived technical discussion is not current Windows configuration guidance.

Value Byte meaning Where it was documented
1024 1 KiB Historical baseline/default reported in older technical material; not verified as universal on current Windows.
1500 1,500 bytes Microsoft’s archived Windows Media Server UDP streaming workaround.
2048 2 KiB Alternative value in the same archived Microsoft workaround.
65536 (64K) 64 KiB Specialized vendor guidance for particular data-distribution and high-performance networking workloads, not a consumer preset. See RTI platform notes and NVIDIA WinOF-2 documentation.

These values are not a scale where a larger number is automatically faster. Any suitable value depends on the application’s datagram sizes and send rate, socket behavior, CPU and driver, offload settings, buffering, Windows version, and where the actual bottleneck lies. The historical Microsoft guidance does not establish which value, if any, is best for a current general-purpose PC.

Does it lower gaming ping or increase internet speed?

There is no reliable evidence that changing this value lowers gaming ping. It concerns local handling of outbound UDP traffic; it cannot shorten the route to a game server, reduce congestion on that route, or make the server respond sooner. A Microsoft Q&A page records a question about registry values for gaming ping but does not demonstrate that this tweak works: Microsoft Q&A.

  • It does not enable “UDP No Delay” or act as the UDP equivalent of TCPNoDelay.
  • It does not fix Wi-Fi interference, bufferbloat, external packet loss, poor routing, or an overloaded game server.
  • It does not guarantee better hit registration, lower jitter, or improved frame-time latency.

A local send-path change could matter to CPU overhead or throughput in a specialized, high-volume UDP workload. That is different from internet round-trip time, and any benefit for a particular application has to be measured on that workload.

For ordinary consumer internet use, changing the threshold is usually not a meaningful speed improvement. Web traffic and downloads commonly use TCP, QUIC, or other application protocols; the historical evidence concerns UDP send processing, not general broadband throughput.

When changing it may be worth investigating

Consider a test only when the workload and evidence point to the local UDP send path—not simply because a generic optimization guide lists the value. Relevant cases may include specialized media streaming, telemetry, market-data distribution, middleware, or high-throughput UDP transfer.

  • The application sends substantial outbound UDP traffic, with datagrams near or above the historical threshold.
  • The application vendor specifically documents this setting, or measurement indicates local send overhead is a bottleneck.
  • You can benchmark the actual workload, change one variable at a time, and roll the change back safely.

It is a poor fit when the goal is lower game ping, the traffic is mostly TCP or web use, the problem is Wi-Fi or bufferbloat, or there is no way to measure relevant UDP performance. Avoid experimenting on a production system without an appropriate recovery plan.

How to inspect, back up, change, and undo the value

These steps require administrator rights. Do not create the value merely because it is missing. If a vendor’s instructions or a controlled test gives you a specific reason to proceed, first record the existing configuration and make a backup.

Check whether the value exists

In an elevated Command Prompt, run:

reg query "HKLMSYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesAFDParameters" /v FastSendDatagramThreshold

Or in an elevated PowerShell window:

Get-ItemProperty `
  -Path 'HKLM:SYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesAFDParameters' `
  -Name FastSendDatagramThreshold `
  -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue

If the query says the value was not found, that alone does not indicate an error.

Export the key before editing

In an elevated Command Prompt, save a backup somewhere you can find, such as the Desktop:

reg export "HKLMSYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesAFDParameters" "%USERPROFILE%DesktopAFD-Parameters-backup.reg"

Keep the exported file until you have confirmed the test is complete and the system behaves as expected.

Add only a workload-justified test value

The following is an example of the historical Microsoft streaming value, not a general recommendation:

reg add "HKLMSYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesAFDParameters" ^
  /v FastSendDatagramThreshold ^
  /t REG_DWORD ^
  /d 1500 ^
  /f

For a specialized application whose own documentation explicitly calls for 64 KiB, the decimal value is 65536 (hexadecimal 0x10000). The Microsoft example 1500 is hexadecimal 0x5DC. When entering a value in Registry Editor, check whether the dialog is set to Decimal or Hexadecimal so the number is interpreted as intended.

Test the change and decide whether to keep it

Test the real application workload, not an unrelated browser speed test. Record the application and version, Windows edition and build, whether traffic is UDP, TCP, or QUIC, typical datagram size, approximate packet rate, NIC and driver, and any vendor recommendation. Compare throughput, CPU use, packet loss, jitter, send errors, application-level recovery, and latency where the application exposes useful measurements.

Change one setting at a time. Do not bundle this with unrelated TCP registry tweaks, RSS changes, TCP autotuning changes, or NIC offload changes; otherwise, you cannot tell which adjustment caused a result. Run the test long enough to capture intermittent behavior. If performance worsens or errors appear, remove the value or restore the backup.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

Remove the custom value to return to built-in behavior

To delete only this value from an elevated Command Prompt:

reg delete "HKLMSYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesAFDParameters" ^
  /v FastSendDatagramThreshold ^
  /f

Alternatively, restore the exported key:

reg import "%USERPROFILE%DesktopAFD-Parameters-backup.reg"

Restart Windows if the application continues to behave differently after a change or rollback. Restarting is a prudent way to ensure networking components reload configuration, but current Microsoft documentation does not establish a universal reboot requirement for this value. Incorrect registry edits can cause serious problems; the archived Microsoft guidance warns about this risk, as does current Microsoft troubleshooting guidance on registry changes. See Microsoft’s AFD and socket troubleshooting article for an example of how Windows networking registry workarounds can be version-specific.

What to investigate instead for real latency problems

If the problem is gaming lag or unstable ping, diagnose the source rather than changing an unrelated threshold. Compare Ethernet with Wi-Fi, check whether latency rises during uploads or downloads, pause background uploads, verify the game-server region, and compare results with and without a VPN or overlay route. Check the game’s own network statistics and consider routing, ISP peering, router queueing, and server-side conditions. For a local throughput problem, check the NIC driver, application settings, packet sizes, and relevant offload behavior before changing registry values.

The archived Microsoft AFD material describes an old, specific UDP streaming case; it does not establish behavior or a performance benefit for every current Windows 10, Windows 11, or Windows Server installation. Treat this as a specialized tuning parameter that requires an application-specific reason and a reproducible test.
