Choose FastAPI for a new API-first service when typed request validation, generated OpenAPI documentation, asynchronous I/O, or WebSockets are central requirements. Choose Flask for a traditional server-rendered site, a small synchronous service, or an established Flask application that already meets its needs. Neither framework is universally better: the right choice depends on the interface, workload, dependencies, and team.
FastAPI’s async-first ASGI architecture can help with concurrent I/O, but it does not make CPU-heavy code faster or guarantee better performance for every endpoint. Flask remains a practical, lightweight WSGI framework; its async views do not turn it into an ASGI application.
FastAPI vs Flask at a glance
| Decision factor | FastAPI | Flask |
|---|---|---|
| Core orientation | API-first framework using Python type hints | Lightweight, general-purpose web framework |
| Interface | ASGI, commonly served by Uvicorn | WSGI by default, commonly served by Gunicorn or Waitress |
| Request validation | Integrated with typed declarations and Pydantic models | Usually implemented manually or added through an extension |
| API documentation | OpenAPI schema and interactive documentation can be generated from routes and schemas | Usually supplied by an extension or maintained separately |
| Async and long-lived connections | Natural fit for async I/O, WebSockets, and streaming in an ASGI deployment | Async views are supported, but WSGI request handling has limitations |
| HTML templates | Possible, but not its main emphasis | Conventional fit for Jinja templates and server-rendered pages |
| Approach | More integrated API structure and explicit contracts | Minimal core; teams choose and assemble more components |
| Good starting point | New JSON APIs, concurrent I/O services, API backends | HTML-first apps, small synchronous services, existing Flask systems |
FastAPI describes itself as a framework based on standard Python type hints, while Flask describes itself as a lightweight WSGI web application framework. See the FastAPI documentation and Flask documentation.
The key architectural difference: ASGI vs WSGI
WSGI is the traditional Python interface for synchronous web applications. Flask uses WSGI by default: a worker handles a request, runs the application, and returns a response. ASGI supports asynchronous application execution and protocols such as WebSockets. FastAPI is designed for ASGI, with Starlette and Pydantic in its stack; an ASGI server such as Uvicorn runs the application.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This distinction matters most when requests spend substantial time waiting on non-blocking operations or when clients hold connections open. It does not mean WSGI is obsolete or that ASGI always wins. A small site using synchronous database calls and templates may gain little from async machinery. Conversely, an API coordinating several asynchronous network calls can benefit from an ASGI design when its dependencies and deployment are configured to use it.
Flask supports async def views, but its documentation explains that under WSGI each request still occupies one worker; Flask runs the coroutine to completion within that request rather than serving many requests through one async worker in the ASGI style. Read Flask’s notes on async and await and its design decisions. For the interface standard itself, see ASGI documentation.
What FastAPI adds to an API project
Validation and serialization from declared types
FastAPI uses type annotations and Pydantic models to parse and validate inputs, describe schemas, and serialize responses. The declarations serve as executable behavior as well as a readable contract. For example:
from fastapi import FastAPI
from pydantic import BaseModel
app = FastAPI()
class Item(BaseModel):
name: str
price: float
in_stock: bool = True
@app.post("/items")
async def create_item(item: Item):
return item
The framework derives the request structure from Item, validates incoming data, and can use the model in its schema and documentation. FastAPI explains this workflow in its guides to request bodies and response models.

Flask can provide equally deliberate validation, but the team normally chooses a library or writes validation code. A minimal manual version of the same endpoint might look like this:
from flask import Flask, request
app = Flask(__name__)
@app.post("/items")
def create_item():
data = request.get_json()
if not isinstance(data, dict):
return {"error": "JSON object required"}, 400
if not isinstance(data.get("name"), str):
return {"error": "name must be a string"}, 400
if not isinstance(data.get("price"), (int, float)):
return {"error": "price must be a number"}, 400
return data, 201
This is an illustrative basic implementation, not a claim that Flask lacks validation options. Flask’s extension ecosystem can supply additional pieces. The difference is that FastAPI makes typed API contracts a central default; Flask leaves that choice open.
Generated OpenAPI documentation
FastAPI can generate an OpenAPI schema and interactive documentation interfaces from declared routes, parameters, and schemas. That helps frontend developers and API consumers inspect an endpoint contract without inferring it from implementation code; the schema can also support client generation and contract testing. The documentation endpoints can be customized or disabled, and generated docs describe what the application declares—not its full operational contract, security policy, or versioning strategy. See FastAPI’s guides to metadata and documentation and first steps.
Dependencies, async I/O, and WebSockets
FastAPI’s dependency system provides a reusable place for concerns such as authentication, database sessions, shared parameters, permissions, and test substitutions. This can clarify larger APIs, though it adds a concept to learn compared with Flask’s direct function-and-decorator style. See FastAPI dependencies.

Async route handlers are useful when they await genuinely asynchronous database drivers, HTTP clients, brokers, or storage operations. FastAPI also supports WebSockets and streaming responses, which fit its ASGI foundation. Connection limits, proxy timeouts, state management, and scaling still need deliberate configuration. See the guides to async behavior, WebSockets, and custom responses.
What Flask does well
A small core with room to choose
Flask supplies routing, request and response handling, configuration, templates, and a development workflow without prescribing a complete application architecture. Teams can pick an ORM, validation library, authentication package, task queue, serialization approach, and documentation tool to suit the project. That flexibility is useful when the application is small or the team already has preferred components; it also means the team owns the integration and maintenance decisions.
Server-rendered pages and synchronous applications
Flask is a natural choice for Jinja-based websites, form workflows, dashboards, internal tools, and content-oriented applications where the server returns HTML. Its documentation covers templates and common application patterns. For conventional synchronous business logic and synchronous libraries, Flask’s model can be easier to reason about: there are fewer async/sync boundaries and no need to introduce an event loop simply because the framework supports one.
A mature, not automatically uniform, ecosystem
Flask has many years of production use and a mature extension ecosystem. Maturity does not guarantee that a particular extension is actively maintained, compatible with a project’s current versions, or suitable for async workloads. Check each dependency’s maintenance, compatibility, and security status rather than treating ecosystem age as a blanket assurance.

Which framework fits your application?
| Application scenario | Practical starting choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| New JSON or REST API | FastAPI | Typed validation, schemas, and generated OpenAPI support are integrated. |
| Traditional HTML website or forms | Flask | Its templates and synchronous request model suit server-rendered workflows. |
| Mobile or frontend backend with a formal contract | FastAPI | Clients can work from declared request and response schemas and OpenAPI output. |
| Many concurrent external API or database calls | FastAPI, if dependencies are async-compatible | ASGI and non-blocking I/O can serve waiting workloads efficiently; blocking calls erase that benefit. |
| WebSocket or streaming service | FastAPI | ASGI is a natural protocol fit, subject to connection and proxy configuration. |
| Small synchronous CRUD service | Either | Choose based on validation needs, team familiarity, and existing libraries; the framework alone does not settle performance. |
| Internal admin tool or prototype | Flask for a small custom tool; consider Django for a fuller admin-oriented app | Flask minimizes framework structure, while Django supplies more integrated full-stack conventions. |
| AI or machine-learning API | FastAPI for an API boundary; run heavy inference appropriately | API validation and async I/O can help, but CPU/GPU inference is not made faster by the web framework. |
| Existing stable Flask application | Usually stay on Flask | A rewrite is worthwhile only when requirements justify the cost of replacing integrations and operations. |
If an application needs built-in administration, authentication conventions, ORM integration, forms, and migrations as one full-stack system, evaluate Django rather than assuming the choice is limited to Flask and FastAPI. Teams already using Django can also consider Django REST Framework for APIs.
Performance and scaling: measure the real workload
FastAPI’s ASGI design and async support can help workloads dominated by concurrent non-blocking I/O. They do not increase the speed of CPU-bound Python code. A synchronous database driver, blocking HTTP client, file operation, or CPU-heavy function called directly inside an async def handler can block the event loop. Use genuinely asynchronous libraries for async handlers, ordinary def handlers when relying on blocking code, and separate worker processes or task queues for substantial CPU work. FastAPI documents these distinctions in its async guide.
FastAPI’s official materials point to independent TechEmpower benchmarks, but benchmark rankings are not a prediction of application performance. Results depend on the test, server, worker count, Python version, hardware, response size, serialization, database behavior, and framework configuration. A plain JSON benchmark says little about a database-backed endpoint with authentication and external calls. Avoid choosing a framework based on a single requests-per-second figure unless a reproducible test matches your actual workload.
Both applications can scale horizontally with suitable process management and infrastructure. More workers mean separate process memory, so in-memory caches, startup state, connection pools, and background tasks need to account for replication. For FastAPI worker guidance, see server workers.

Developer experience and the flexibility trade-off
- FastAPI reduces API assembly work: request models, validation, response schemas, and documentation follow from declarations. The trade-off is learning type hints, Pydantic, dependency injection, and, where appropriate, async programming.
- Flask keeps the starting surface small: basic routes are direct and easy to follow. The trade-off is that teams make and maintain more decisions about validation, serialization, API docs, error formats, authentication, and structure.
- Debugging differs with the workload: synchronous Flask code can be simpler when its dependencies are synchronous. Async services require attention to blocking calls, event-loop behavior, and boundaries between async and sync libraries.
- Testing is possible in both: select tests that exercise request validation, error responses, dependencies, database behavior, and deployment-relevant protocol needs. FastAPI documents async tests; neither framework’s test client replaces production-like integration testing.
Deployment differences
Flask: deploy as WSGI
Use a production WSGI server such as Gunicorn or Waitress, or a hosting platform’s supported production setup. A common Gunicorn launch form is:
gunicorn "app:app"
Do not use Flask’s built-in development server, debugger, or reloader in production. Flask’s deployment documentation describes production server choices and related deployment considerations.
FastAPI: deploy as ASGI
A common Uvicorn launch form is:
uvicorn app.main:app --host 0.0.0.0 --port 8000
FastAPI’s current command-line workflow also documents fastapi dev for development; for example, fastapi dev app/main.py. Use the production launch and worker setup appropriate to the installed version and environment. FastAPI’s deployment guides cover deployment, workers, and Docker. Its Docker guidance recommends building an application image directly rather than using the deprecated tiangolo/uvicorn-gunicorn-fastapi base image. Uvicorn’s documentation covers its settings.
With either framework, choose hosting based on WSGI or ASGI support, WebSocket needs, worker behavior, background processes, autoscaling, cold starts, storage, and observability—not on the framework name alone. Both can run on containers, virtual machines, and managed platforms; workload and platform configuration determine the fit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteShould you migrate an existing Flask application?
Do not treat migration as an automatic upgrade. A stable Flask system that meets its requirements may gain little from a rewrite, particularly if its bottleneck is a database, external service, or CPU-heavy task rather than request dispatch.
Migration is more defensible when
- The API is being redesigned and typed contracts, validation, or generated documentation would remove significant ongoing work.
- Concurrent async I/O, WebSockets, or long-lived connections are becoming core product requirements.
- The current extension stack or manual API contract has become a material maintenance burden.
- The team can update deployment, tests, and operations as well as application code.
Migration is less attractive when
- The application is stable and its synchronous workload meets service requirements.
- Core authentication, middleware, ORM, or other extensions are Flask-specific and difficult to replace.
- Database drivers and third-party clients are synchronous, so an async rewrite would not change the dominant workload.
- The real performance constraint is elsewhere or the team lacks a measured reason to accept migration risk.
Reduce risk with a staged transition
- Inventory routes, middleware, extensions, database access, background jobs, tests, authentication, and observability before estimating effort.
- Identify a bounded API or service boundary and define its contract, error behavior, and ownership.
- Run the new ASGI service alongside Flask where the architecture allows it; route traffic deliberately rather than replacing the whole application at once.
- Test shared concerns such as authentication, database transactions, timeouts, logging, health checks, and graceful shutdown under the intended deployment setup.
- Move additional routes only when measurements and operational experience justify the next step.
For a Flask team whose primary need is an ASGI-based framework with a Flask-like style, Flask’s async documentation suggests considering Quart. Teams seeking a lower-level ASGI toolkit can inspect Starlette; Litestar is another typed ASGI framework option.
Which should you choose?
- Choose FastAPI for a new JSON API when validation, formal schemas, generated OpenAPI documentation, async I/O, WebSockets, or streaming are important and your dependencies can support the intended async model.
- Choose Flask for an HTML-first site, a small conventional synchronous service, a prototype that benefits from a minimal core, or a stable Flask application whose current architecture works.
- Consider Django when the application needs a fuller, convention-driven web stack with integrated admin and common application components.
- Choose neither on a slogan: benchmark a representative endpoint if performance matters, check the health of specific dependencies, and include deployment and migration costs in the decision.
Framework versions change frequently; check the official package listings and release notes when selecting a version: FastAPI on PyPI, FastAPI release notes, Flask on PyPI, and Flask changes.
