Yes—Intel Itanium is in formal end-of-life status. Intel’s history records a retirement announcement in 2019, after nearly 20 years of production. For owners, the more immediate question is the condition of the whole system: HPE’s standard support for HP-UX 11i v3 and Integrity i4/i6 ended in 2025, while narrower mature software support is planned through at least 2028.

What ended, and when?

Itanium was Intel’s IA-64 processor family, developed jointly with Hewlett-Packard for enterprise and high-performance computing. Intel’s history says the companies unveiled the architecture in May 2001. Intel later recorded its retirement announcement in 2019, after nearly 20 years of production; Intel Product Change Notification 116733-00 separately classifies selected Itanium processors and the Scalable Memory Buffer in a product-discontinuance/end-of-life action.

That distinction matters: the notice is for selected parts, not a claim that every system, component, or support contract ended on one universal date. Intel’s history establishes the family’s retirement; the product-change notice documents a specific end-of-life action.

Date Milestone What it means
May 2001 Intel and Hewlett-Packard unveiled their jointly designed IA-64 processor. Launch of the architecture Intel described as its first major departure from x86 in nearly 20 years.
2019 Intel’s official history records the retirement announcement after nearly 20 years of production. Intel’s account of the family’s end; PCN 116733-00 covers selected processors and a related component in an end-of-life action.
December 31, 2025 HPE standard support and sustaining engineering ended for HP-UX 11i v3 and Integrity i4/i6 servers. Customers relying on those services need to confirm what coverage, if any, applies to their specific systems and software.
Through at least December 31, 2028 HPE plans mature software support for HP-UX 11i v3. This narrower support provides access to existing fixes and updates, not new fixes or security updates.

Why an Itanium server is more than a replaceable CPU

An Itanium installation is a platform-specific stack, not simply a desktop processor that can be swapped for a current Intel chip. The U.S. Supreme Court docket materials describe Itanium servers running HP-UX and explain that software must be ported and tested for the platform. Hardware, operating system, databases, middleware, compilers, and vendor-certified software versions therefore need to be considered together.

  • Robust Power & Thermal Design: Engineered with 125W base power and 250W max turbo power to sustain high‑intensity

That coupling also helps explain why a processor’s end-of-life status does not, by itself, answer whether a particular business application can keep running. The answer depends on the exact server, operating-system release, application versions, contractual support, and ability to obtain replacement parts and qualified expertise.

What “Itanic” means

“Itanic” is a colloquial nickname used in the title to frame Itanium’s commercial failure. The authoritative sources cited here document the architecture’s launch, retirement, and support milestones, but do not establish an official origin or technical definition for the nickname. It is not Intel’s product name.

What changed in the software ecosystem?

Oracle’s 2011 decision to stop new Itanium software development became the subject of litigation. In a 2012 statement, HP reported that a court found the settlement agreement required Oracle to continue offering its product suite on HP’s Itanium-based servers until HP discontinued sales of those servers.

The practical lesson is to check software-vendor support independently of hardware or operating-system coverage. A machine can still boot and perform its workload while a database, middleware component, or application is outside its vendor’s supported configuration.

Should you keep an Itanium system or migrate?

There is no universal cutoff for every owner. A stable, isolated workload with documented recovery procedures may justify a short-term preservation plan; a critical service that needs current fixes, security updates, or vendor support usually makes migration planning more urgent. Compare the actual cost and risk of both paths rather than treating continued operation as proof that continued support exists.

Inventory the workload and its dependencies

  • Record the exact Integrity server model, Itanium processor, HP-UX release and patch level, storage, network interfaces, and backup method.
  • List databases, compilers, middleware, custom applications, and their certified versions; identify license terms and vendor support status.
  • Map interfaces to other systems and document which dependencies are essential for recovery, not just routine operation.

Verify the support boundary

Check the contracts and product versions that apply to your installation with HPE and each software vendor. HPE’s mature support scope is not a promise of newly developed fixes or security updates. Treat access to existing fixes as different from ongoing engineering and security coverage, and make the residual risk explicit in operational and compliance decisions.

Test whether preservation is viable

  • Confirm that replacement processors, memory, server parts, and compatible spares can actually be sourced for the specific platform. Intel’s legacy-support page names mature-component distributors including CNE Direct, Converge, OEMXS, Rochester Electronics, and Smith; a listing is not proof of current stock, compatibility, or warranty.
  • Assess whether your team or a contracted specialist can diagnose hardware and HP-UX failures, restore backups, and reproduce the production environment.
  • Set a limit for acceptable downtime and identify a tested recovery route if a non-repairable failure occurs.

Build a migration comparison

Estimate rehosting, application changes or rewrites, testing, licensing, data conversion, downtime, and the effort needed to retrain or retain specialist staff. Compare those costs with the ongoing expense and operational risk of keeping the legacy stack. Include a rollback or parallel-running plan where the service’s criticality warrants it; do not assume an application can move unchanged to a different processor architecture.

Can you still buy an Itanium processor?

Intel’s end-of-life status means Itanium should be treated as specialist replacement or preservation hardware, not as a current processor line. A listing for an Intel Itanium 9700 does not establish that a part is available, genuine, new, or suitable for a particular server. Before purchase, verify authenticity, exact platform and socket compatibility, condition, return terms, and warranty with the seller or a qualified service provider.
