“Fake email software” usually means a service that gives you a temporary email address to receive messages. It can also mean developer software for capturing test emails. Neither meaning automatically refers to a forged sender identity: that is a separate topic, and the sources cited here do not establish its technical details.
What does “fake email software” mean?
The phrase has no single formal technical definition established by the sources cited here. In everyday searches, it often refers to a disposable or temporary inbox: a short-term address used to receive email. A 2020 University of Illinois thesis describes disposable email services as web services that provide temporary addresses for receiving, and sometimes sending, messages before the address and messages are discarded. Addresses may be chosen by the user or assigned randomly. [c005]
People also search for these services using terms such as “tempmail,” “10-minute mail,” and “throwaway email.” These are examples of related search language, not a ranked list of terms. [c008]

How does a temporary email inbox work?
A service provides an address that can receive messages for a limited time. Depending on the service, you may choose the address or receive one automatically. The service’s own rules determine whether messages are deleted, how long they remain available, and whether other people can access the inbox. There is no universal retention period for temporary email services.
For example, one provider’s terms say that its inboxes are receive-only and that messages are deleted after 24 hours. Its privacy policy says it retains the latest 20 messages per address during that period. Those figures describe that provider’s stated policy, not a category-wide standard; check the current terms and privacy policy of any service you use. [c003] [c002]
When might someone use one?
A temporary address can be useful when the expected message is low-stakes and the user does not need lasting access to the inbox. One provider’s acceptable-use policy gives examples including receiving a one-time confirmation, trying a product once, or testing one’s own signup and email flow. These are examples from that provider’s policy, not guarantees that every service or receiving website permits the same uses. [c001]

- Receiving a one-time confirmation for a low-risk interaction.
- Trying a service when you do not need a persistent account or future correspondence.
- Testing your own signup, onboarding, or transactional-email workflow.
Check both the inbox provider’s acceptable-use policy and the destination website’s terms. The cited provider prohibits uses including fraud, impersonation, ban evasion, promotion or trial farming, spam, harassment, and attempts to access another person’s inbox. [c001]
What are the privacy and account risks?
Some inboxes are not private
A shared or unreserved inbox may be accessible to anyone who knows or guesses its address while messages remain available. The cited provider explicitly warns that its addresses are not reserved or secret. Do not treat an address like this as a private mailbox. [c001]
Messages may disappear
If an address or its messages expire, you may lose confirmations, receipts, or access to future account notices. A short-lived inbox is therefore a poor choice for accounts that matter, password recovery, or correspondence you need to keep.

Sensitive accounts can be exposed or lost
The cited provider advises against using its service for banking or government messages, medical records, important password resets, or anything whose disclosure or loss could cause harm. [c001] A 2019 academic paper also reported risky cases in its study, including disposable addresses used with sensitive services and password resets, and warned of account-hijacking risks. That study is a specific, time-bound warning; it does not establish a current prevalence rate or mean every temporary-email use has the same risk. [c006]
For accounts you need to recover or protect, use a durable mailbox that only you control. A temporary address is best reserved for situations where losing access to the message or having it exposed would not cause harm.

If your goal is to inspect messages generated by your own application, look for a controlled email-testing or capture workflow rather than assuming a public disposable inbox is suitable. Mailsac documents email capture and testing features, along with REST APIs, WebSockets, and webhooks. [c004] A separate Temp Mail API documentation page describes creating disposable addresses and receiving or parsing messages. [c007]

Before choosing a tool, verify the details that affect your workflow:
- Whether inboxes are public, shared, or private.
- How long addresses and messages are retained.
- Whether attachments are supported.
- Whether APIs or webhooks are available for automation.
- Whether custom domains are supported.
- Whether the tool is intended for test-only traffic rather than production email.
Feature availability and terms can change, so confirm them in the provider’s current documentation. Do not send real customer or confidential data through a testing inbox unless the service’s privacy and security terms support that use.
