For log-based blocking of repeated SSH or other login attacks, SSHGuard is the closest straightforward alternative to Fail2ban. CrowdSec is a more modular option that separates log detection from enforcement and can add community threat decisions when you connect to its network. OpenSSH’s own connection controls can help manage unauthenticated connection pressure, but they do not replace a tool that tracks failed attempts and blocks repeat offenders.

How to choose a Fail2ban alternative

Compare alternatives by whether they can read your authentication logs, how they recognize repeated failures, and where they can enforce a block. Also consider how much tuning they require, whether you want community threat intelligence, and how you will recover if a legitimate administrator is blocked.

  • Log compatibility: Identify whether sshd writes to a file, the systemd journal, or a centralized logging pipeline. A detector cannot act on events it does not acquire or parse.
  • Detection: Check how the tool groups events and handles thresholds, time windows, and ban duration.
  • Enforcement: Confirm that the tool’s firewall backend or separate enforcement component matches your host and active ruleset.
  • Operations: Plan whitelists, alert review, and an out-of-band recovery route before enabling automatic blocking.

The project documentation describes architectures and configuration options, not controlled head-to-head efficacy results. These tools therefore cannot be ranked here by comparative blocking performance.

SSHGuard Recognizes attack patterns in logs or command output and scores offenders over a configurable interval. Uses one of several firewall backends. A direct alternative for repeat attacks against SSH and other services. Verify the log reader and backend, review thresholds and ban durations, and whitelist trusted addresses. See the SSHGuard 2.4 manual.
CrowdSec Acquires logs, parses and enriches events, and applies scenarios and profiles to identify behavior such as repeated failures from one IP. Separate bouncers enforce decisions at supported points, including a firewall, reverse proxy, or web server. Useful for modular integrations, multiple machines, or optional community decisions. Match acquisition and parsers to your logs, select a compatible bouncer, and review the data-sharing implications of Central API participation. See CrowdSec’s introduction and concepts documentation.
Native OpenSSH controls Controls unauthenticated connection handling and connection pressure rather than tracking offenders across log events. Applied by sshd itself. A complement for SSH connection pressure, not a full log-based repeat-offender replacement. Check the installed release’s sshd_config(5) documentation for directive behavior; see the OpenSSH configuration reference.

SSHGuard: the closest direct alternative

The SSHGuard version 2.4 manual, dated March 16, 2021, says: “sshguard protects hosts from brute-force attacks against SSH and other services.” It describes aggregating system logs, recognizing attack patterns, and blocking repeat offenders through firewall backends. Its configuration supports scoring, detection windows, temporary blocking, optional persistent blacklisting, and whitelisting.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Before adopting it, confirm that its input matches where your system records authentication events and that the configured firewall backend reaches the ruleset actually used by the host. SSHGuard’s setup guide cautions that firewall examples may need adjustment for the local ruleset: SSHGuard setup guide.

CrowdSec: modular detection with separate enforcement

CrowdSec’s documented SSH brute-force flow separates the work into stages: acquire service logs, parse and enrich events, detect repeated behavior, create a decision, and have a bouncer enforce it. This separation can make integrations flexible, but it also creates more components to configure and verify than a single detector-and-firewall setup.

Its community feature is tied to participation in the network. Participating engines share detected attack signals and receive curated community decisions. Review the data-sharing implications before connecting an installation. CrowdSec’s firewall bouncer documentation lists iptables, nftables, ipset, and pf support; for web applications, an HTTP-aware WAF bouncer may be more appropriate than relying only on IP-level firewall blocking, and can run alongside a firewall bouncer. See CrowdSec’s firewall bouncer documentation.

When native OpenSSH controls are enough—and when they are not

OpenSSH includes controls for handling unauthenticated connections, including probabilistic refusal at a configured load threshold. These controls act within sshd and can help reduce connection pressure. They do not perform the same cross-attempt log tracking and repeat-offender banning as SSHGuard, CrowdSec, or Fail2ban. Directive behavior can vary by OpenSSH release and distribution, so consult the host’s installed sshd_config(5) manual before changing settings.

Set up and verify the detection and blocking path

  1. Find the real log source. Check where sshd records authentication events on your distribution: a log file, the systemd journal, or a centralized pipeline. CrowdSec’s example acquisition uses /var/log/auth.log, but its acquisition configuration must match the installation.
  2. Confirm detection before troubleshooting enforcement. Verify that the tool receives representative failed-login events and produces matches or alerts. If it sees events but does not create a ban, check whether the configured threshold has been met. Fail2ban’s troubleshooting documentation distinguishes missing matches from matches that have not reached the threshold: How Fail2ban works.
  3. Verify the enforcement component. Ensure the selected firewall backend or bouncer is installed and active, then inspect the actual firewall table, chain, or set. CrowdSec’s firewall bouncer must match the host firewall; SSHGuard documents nftables sets that operators can inspect.
  4. Prepare for mistaken blocks. Whitelist trusted administration addresses where appropriate and keep a tested recovery route. SSHGuard supports address and CIDR whitelists. More aggressive thresholds may catch more behavior but also increase the chance of blocking legitimate users, a trade-off noted in Fail2ban’s documentation.
  5. For web logins, match enforcement to the application. An IP-level firewall block and HTTP-aware inspection are different approaches. Consider a WAF-capable bouncer where application-layer visibility is needed.
