Neither Facebook Marketplace nor Craigslist is proven to sell local items faster or reach more buyers overall. Choose based on the buyers you can see for your item in your area, any posting fee, and how you want to communicate and arrange the handoff. Marketplace offers Facebook-connected discovery and, where available, shipping tools; Craigslist is geared toward local classified listings and face-to-face deals.
How to choose between Marketplace and Craigslist
Start by searching both services for items like yours in your town or neighborhood. Compare how many relevant, recent listings there are and whether they appear to be attracting interest. A platform’s total listing volume is not the same thing as the number of likely buyers for your item.
- Try Marketplace first if you already use Facebook, your category looks active locally, or you want the option of shipping if it is available to you.
- Consider Craigslist if you want a straightforward local classified post and prefer to arrange a direct, in-person exchange.
- Check Craigslist’s fee before listing if you are selling a vehicle or another category that may be charged.
- For a bulky pickup item, prioritize the local buyer pool and a safe handoff; neither service is established as better for a particular town.
There is no source-backed comparison of local reach, completed sales, or time-to-sale between the two platforms, so actual activity for your item and location is more useful than a universal winner.
What the platforms offer sellers
Facebook Marketplace
Marketplace connects listings to Facebook, and Facebook Help also describes selling through buy-and-sell groups or a Page. Shipping may depend on your location; it is not available to every seller or listing. See Facebook’s ways to sell for the platform’s overview.

In a March 12, 2026 announcement, Meta described AI-assisted listing drafts from uploaded images, suggested prices based on similar local listings, drafted availability replies, summaries of Facebook and Marketplace activity shown to buyers, and prepaid shipping labels with tracking through a shipped-order dashboard. Meta says features may roll out over time. These tools may streamline listing work, but they do not establish that an item will sell faster.
Meta also reported more than 3.5 million Marketplace listings each day in the US and Canada. That is Meta’s own figure for listing volume—not a count of active buyers, a measure of local demand, or evidence that a particular item is more likely to sell. Craigslist
Craigslist is a local classified service whose safety guidance emphasizes local, face-to-face transactions. Its posting charges depend on category and geography, and the service says charges are one-time rather than subscription fees. The fee shown during the local posting flow is the practical check before publishing.

Craigslist’s US fee table lists For Sale by Owner at $0–5, and cars and trucks, motorcycles, and RVs at $5. Other categories and locations have their own exceptions, and fees can change. Consult the Craigslist paid-posting FAQ and posting-fees page, then confirm the amount in the create-posting process.

Fees: check the category and location
Craigslist’s general statement that most postings are free has exceptions. Its US examples include a $0–5 charge for For Sale by Owner and a $5 charge for cars and trucks, motorcycles, and RVs. These are posting charges, not a promise that every local listing in those categories will cost the same: Craigslist says fees vary by geography and may change. Check the current fee when creating the post.
The cited Facebook Help material does not establish a universal Marketplace listing fee or fee policy. Do not assume that every listing is free or charged based on this comparison; check the terms and any cost shown for your own listing.

Shipping, pickup, and the handoff
For an item that can be shipped, Marketplace may be more convenient if shipping is available for your location and listing. Meta’s 2026 announcement describes prepaid labels and shipment tracking in a dashboard, while Facebook Help qualifies shipping availability by location. Neither source supports treating shipping as a universal Marketplace option.
For local pickup, the useful question is which service has active, relevant buyers nearby and lets you arrange a clear handoff. A bulky item may be easiest to sell locally, but the sources do not show that either platform consistently performs better for pickup listings.

Neither platform’s guidance proves that one is safer overall, and a profile summary, rating, or public location cannot guarantee a safe transaction. Craigslist recommends dealing locally and face-to-face, avoiding advance payments and suspicious shipping or mover offers, and using its email relay. Its scam guidance also warns against requests for codes or financial and personal information.

For an in-person exchange, Craigslist advises choosing a public place, avoiding secluded locations and inviting strangers home, being especially careful with valuable items, telling someone where you are going, and considering a companion. - Keep communication on the platform where practical, and ignore requests for verification codes or sensitive financial information.
- Agree on the item, price, meeting place, and payment method before meeting.
- Verify that payment has actually arrived before handing over the item; do not rely on screenshots or a promise of payment.
- Choose a sensible public meeting place when practical, and do not meet in a secluded location or invite an unfamiliar buyer into your home.
Which should you use for your item?
Household goods, clothing, and decor
Try Marketplace first if you already use Facebook and listings in your category look active nearby. Compare actual responses rather than assuming platform-wide popularity guarantees a sale.

Check Craigslist’s local fee for the exact category before you post. Some US owner vehicle categories have a $5 posting charge, but the fee depends on the category and location and may change.
Bulky goods sold by pickup
Use the service with the more promising local listings for your item, and plan the pickup carefully. The available evidence does not establish a better platform for bulky local sales.
Items that could be shipped
Marketplace’s announced shipping tools may suit a sale beyond your immediate area, provided shipping is enabled for your location and listing. If it is not, compare local activity instead.
