If F-Droid’s interface looks dated to you, the practical fix may be its official 2.0 redesign—not a launcher-icon swap or an Android-wide theme setting. F-Droid announced version 2.0 on September 24, 2026. Its 2.0-rc1 listing describes a beta client with a rewritten interface and an optional Material You color theme. Check the version shown for your own F-Droid listing before expecting those changes: beta features are not guaranteed in every stable build or on every device.

What changes in F-Droid 2.0?

F-Droid’s 2.0 announcement describes the update as a complete redesign intended to fit current Android patterns while retaining familiar interactions. The project says, “The user experience was redesigned to integrate smoothly with current Android patterns, like Material Design, while keeping familiar F-Droid interactions in place.” That is the project’s description of its design goals, not an independent assessment of how attractive or usable the new client is.

The official listing identifies version 2.0-rc1 as a beta added on August 23, 2026, and says its interface was rewritten in Kotlin Compose. The listing also describes these changes:

  • Improved search that includes app descriptions and translations.
  • Easier app discovery and improved filtering.
  • Approval of an app installation before its download begins.
  • Multiple downloads and updates running concurrently.
  • An optional Material You color theme.

These details describe the 2.0-rc1 beta listing; they should not be assumed to apply to every stable release. A color theme can change the client’s colors, but the listing does not promise arbitrary theme packs or user controls for every icon, layout, or typeface.

How to check whether you have the redesign

  1. Open the F-Droid client and find its listing or version information.
  2. Read the version label shown there. Look specifically for the 2.0 redesign; the feature details cited here belong to the 2.0-rc1 beta listing.
  3. If your installed listing identifies the client as 2.0-rc1, look in the client’s available settings for the optional Material You color theme. Its presence should be checked in your own beta build rather than assumed.

The project’s announcement and listing do not establish availability on every Android device or in every region. If your client still shows a different version, that alone does not indicate a problem with your installation; it means you should not expect the beta’s visual treatment or features based on the 2.0-rc1 notes.

How the installed client and 2.0 differ

What to compare Your existing installed client F-Droid 2.0 / 2.0-rc1 beta
Availability Depends on the version shown in your own client listing. The 2.0-rc1 feature details are for a beta; rollout to every device or region is not established.
Visual treatment Check the appearance of the version you have installed. The project describes a redesign; the 2.0-rc1 listing also documents an optional Material You color theme.
Finding apps Search and discovery depend on your installed version. The beta listing describes improved search, including descriptions and translations, easier discovery, and improved filtering.
Familiar interactions Your current client retains its existing interaction patterns. The announcement says familiar F-Droid interactions are intended to remain alongside the redesign.

Changing the launcher icon is not the same as changing F-Droid’s interface

F-Droid’s FAQ documents a calculator launcher-icon setting for client 1.x. That setting changes how the app identifies itself from the launcher; it is not an in-app theme and will not redesign the screens you see after opening F-Droid. The FAQ’s 1.x scope also means it should not be treated as a setting for the 2.0 client.

What the complaints about F-Droid’s appearance establish

People have discussed F-Droid’s appearance before: a 2016 forum thread includes requests for a more modern interface and complaints about its banner, logo, and icons. Those posts show that the subject has come up in the community, but they are dated qualitative feedback—not evidence of current consensus or a measure of how users feel about the new design. No attributable statistic about F-Droid users’ aesthetic opinions is established here.
