There is no universal “encrypted credentials” file to extract. Browsers, operating systems and Git helpers use different stores, keys and access rules. For your own account, use the application’s password-management, export or recovery controls; do not bypass an operating-system vault or decrypt another user’s data. Encryption at rest can hinder offline theft, but it does not hide credentials from malware already running in your signed-in session.

What an encrypted credential store actually is

A credential store is a combination of a database or vault, an encryption mechanism, and a key protected by the operating system, an application profile, a cloud account or a user session. The exact design changes with the tool, platform, configuration and software version.

That distinction matters when moving to a new computer. A copied profile database may be useless without its platform key; a cloud-synced account may contain a separate copy; and a helper configured for plaintext may not use encryption at all.

How common tools store credentials

Tool or store Typical storage model Important boundary
Chrome and Chromium-based browsers Saved passwords are generally encrypted on disk with platform-specific protection. Current Chromium documentation describes Windows App-Bound encryption and, on macOS and iOS, encrypted profile credentials using a key held in Keychain. Details change by platform and release. Signing out of browser sync does not by itself delete passwords already saved locally.
Microsoft Edge Passwords are encrypted with AES, while the encryption key is kept in an operating-system storage area. A locally running attacker may be able to access a key available to processes on the device; encryption at rest is not a defense against a compromised session.
Windows Credential Manager An operating-system vault accessed through Windows credential APIs; the vault encrypts entries with the user’s logon-session key. Access boundaries follow the Windows account and session. A compromised account or session can expose what that account can use.
macOS Keychain An operating-system-managed keychain used by macOS and applications such as browsers and Git helpers. Unlocking and access prompts are governed by the logged-in macOS user, keychain state and application authorization.
Git Credential Manager (GCM) Depending on configuration: Windows Credential Manager, DPAPI-protected files, macOS Keychain, freedesktop Secret Service, GPG/pass-compatible files, an in-memory cache or a plaintext file. Windows and macOS defaults are documented by GCM; the Linux default can be unset. Secret Service requires a graphical session, and plaintext is explicitly insecure.

Browser recovery and migration

Chrome and Chromium browsers

Use the browser’s built-in password manager to view, export or delete credentials after authenticating to the operating-system account or browser profile as requested. The available controls and encryption behavior depend on the browser release and operating system.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Do not assume that signing out of Chrome sync removes local data. Treat sync status and local deletion as separate decisions: review the browser’s password-manager and privacy controls, choose the export or deletion action intended for your account, and verify what remains on the old device.

Chromium’s Security FAQ cautions that “it is a bad idea to store the credential that protects an asset in the same place as the asset itself.” Keep any exported password file separate from the computer or account it is intended to protect.

Microsoft Edge

Use Edge’s password-management interface and its account or device authentication prompts for an owner-authorized export or recovery. Because synced passwords can create cloud exposure, check which Microsoft account is syncing and whether the destination device is trusted before enabling synchronization or importing an export.

Windows Credential Manager

Windows provides Credential Manager and credential APIs for managing entries used by Windows and applications. Open the built-in Credential Manager interface from Windows settings or Control Panel, identify the entry you own, and use the available edit or removal controls. Application-specific secrets may not be displayed as ordinary website passwords, so consult that application’s documented recovery flow rather than attempting to read vault files directly.

macOS Keychain

Keychain Access lets the logged-in owner inspect and manage permitted items after macOS authentication. Use it to remove obsolete entries or support an application’s documented migration process. An application may store a token, certificate or key rather than a human-readable password, so copying a keychain database is not a substitute for the application’s export function.

Git credentials and helper backends

Git normally delegates credential storage to a helper. First inspect the configuration that applies to your repository, user and system:

git config --show-origin --get-all credential.helper

This command identifies configured helpers; it does not reveal secret values. The helper’s own documentation determines where data is kept and how an owner can migrate or delete it.

What the GCM choices mean

  • Windows Credential Manager: GCM’s documented Windows default, backed by the Windows vault.
  • DPAPI-protected files: Encrypted files protected by Windows Data Protection API.
  • macOS Keychain: GCM’s documented macOS default.
  • freedesktop Secret Service: A Linux desktop secret store that requires a graphical session.
  • GPG/pass-compatible files: Files protected through the configured GPG/pass setup.
  • In-memory cache: Temporary storage; GCM documents a default timeout of 900 seconds, but this is a project default rather than a universal Git rule.
  • Plaintext files: Convenient but explicitly insecure because anyone who can read the file can read the credential.

On Linux, GCM’s default backend can be unset. Remote or headless sessions may therefore behave differently from a local desktop session. Before changing helpers, record the current configuration, choose a supported backend for the target environment, and revoke the old token or password if you cannot verify that the old store was removed.

Threat model: what encryption does and does not stop

  • Lost or stolen disk: Encryption at rest can make direct database reading harder, especially when the key is protected by the operating system.
  • Another account on the same machine: Isolation may block ordinary access, but administrative control or recovery access can change that boundary.
  • Malware in your session: Code running as your user may be able to invoke the same browser, vault or helper APIs available to you, observe credentials when they are used, or access unlocked secrets.
  • Cloud synchronization: A synced copy introduces an account and provider boundary in addition to the local device.

Do not label a store simply “secure” or “insecure” without stating which threat you mean. A vault can be appropriate protection against offline file theft while offering little protection from an already-compromised signed-in session.

Safe owner-authorized recovery workflow

  1. Confirm ownership and scope. Work only with your account, device and organization-approved recovery process.
  2. Identify the application and platform. Record the browser or Git helper version, operating system, profile and whether synchronization is enabled.
  3. Use the built-in manager. Prefer the browser password manager, Windows Credential Manager, Keychain Access or the Git helper’s documented commands and UI.
  4. Authenticate when prompted. An operating-system password, biometric check or account sign-in is part of the store’s access boundary; do not attempt to bypass it.
  5. Export only when necessary. Select an authorized destination that is not a shared folder, public drive or source-control repository.
  6. Protect the export. Treat it as plaintext-equivalent secret material unless the exporting tool explicitly provides encryption. Limit permissions and transfer it only through an approved channel.
  7. Import or update the destination. Prefer a supported import flow or rotate the affected password or token after migration.
  8. Remove remnants. Delete the export securely, clear obsolete helper entries and review old devices and sync sessions.
  9. Verify. Test sign-in from the new location, then confirm that the old device, profile or helper no longer retains credentials you intended to remove.

When recovery fails

The old computer is unavailable

Use the service’s account-recovery or password-reset process, then revoke sessions and tokens associated with the missing device. A copied encrypted profile usually cannot be opened on a different system without the original platform key and account context.

The browser is signed out but passwords still appear locally

That is expected when local deletion was not selected. Reopen the browser’s password and privacy controls, inspect the local profile, and explicitly delete or export entries as appropriate.

Git prompts repeatedly for a password

Inspect the configured helper and whether its backend is available in the current session. A headless Linux session, a locked keychain or an unset helper can prevent retrieval. Reconfigure through the helper’s supported setup, then store a least-privilege token rather than placing a secret in a repository or command line.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An export cannot be imported

Check that the destination expects the same format and that the export was not altered or truncated. If the file was exposed during troubleshooting, treat the credentials as compromised and rotate them.

Practical boundaries to remember

  • Storage location and encryption method vary by tool, operating system, configuration and version.
  • Signing out of sync is not the same as deleting local saved data.
  • Git’s security depends heavily on the selected helper backend.
  • OS vaults protect according to account and session boundaries, not against every process running under that account.
  • Exported credentials are secrets: keep them private, migrate promptly and remove them safely.
