To extract e-commerce prices reliably, treat every value as a time-stamped observation rather than a permanent fact. Record the exact product variant, URL, currency, market, promotion and availability context, then normalize and validate the result before comparing it. Start with an official feed or API when one exists, check the retailer’s current access rules and robots.txt, keep request volume low, and use a maintained crawler or hosted service when page changes make a one-off script unreliable.
Start by defining the price question
A useful scraper begins with a precise question. “What is the price of this product?” is incomplete unless you specify the product configuration, customer context and observation time.
- Products: identify the SKU, model, size, color, pack count or other variant. A parent product page can contain several prices.
- Retailers and URLs: list the exact pages and note whether a page is a listing, product detail page, cart page or checkout page.
- Market: record country, currency, language, tax display and shipping destination. A US price and a German price are different observations even when the product is identical.
- Frequency: choose one-time collection, hourly or daily monitoring, or a less frequent historical series.
- Purpose: competitor intelligence, assortment analysis, alerting, catalog maintenance and statistical measurement have different accuracy and retention requirements.
Write the scope down before coding. It prevents a parser from silently mixing a 500 ml product with a 1 litre variant or a sale price with a regular price.
Check permission and the least risky data route
Look for an official API, product feed, affiliate feed or data-sharing agreement first. Those routes usually provide clearer field definitions and more stable access than HTML scraping.

Before automating requests, review the retailer’s current terms, authentication boundary, rate expectations and robots.txt. A robots file is a technical crawl directive, not a complete legal assessment. It neither grants permission for every use nor resolves contractual, copyright, privacy or database-rights questions. For a consequential deployment, obtain jurisdiction- and site-specific advice.
- Do not bypass login controls, paywalls, CAPTCHAs or other access controls without authorization.
- Do not collect personal data unless it is necessary, permitted and protected.
- Identify your crawler with an honest user agent and provide a contact address where appropriate.
- Cache responses, limit concurrency and stop when a site signals that your traffic is unwanted.
Eurostat’s November 2020 practical guidelines for web scraping HICP prices provide an official example of checking a shop’s robots.txt as part of a statistical workflow. Scrapy’s robots middleware can filter requests disallowed by that file when configured, but the middleware does not replace your own legal and operational review.
Design an observation record before extracting
Store enough context to reproduce and audit each value. A compact schema can look like this:

Keep the raw response or a permitted snapshot alongside normalized fields when you need auditability. Apply retention and access controls appropriate to the data.
Extract prices from static HTML with Python
The following example uses a simple CSS selector and deliberately treats the selector as site-specific. Inspect the page and replace it with the retailer’s current markup; never assume that a class name is universal.

Handle JavaScript-rendered product pages
If the initial HTML contains no price because JavaScript renders it later, use a browser automation tool only where your access is authorized. Playwright is one option; install it with pip install playwright and then run playwright install chromium.

browser.close()Use a selector wait rather than a fixed sleep where possible. A fixed delay can be too short on a slow run and wasteful on a fast one. For pages that require a location, cookie choice or variant click, record those actions as part of market_context; otherwise a later analyst cannot explain why two observations differ.
Normalize and validate before comparing
Parse money without losing meaning
Use decimal arithmetic, not binary floating point, for monetary values. Keep currency separate from amount and preserve the original display text. Convert currencies only with a documented rate and timestamp. Do not merge item price, shipping, tax, duties and marketplace fees unless your comparison explicitly defines a delivered-total measure.
Confirm the product and variant
Check structured identifiers, title, selected options and pack size. A changed page layout can leave a valid-looking number attached to the wrong item. Flag records when the identifier disappears, the title changes substantially or the page reports “from” pricing.
Reject stale or implausible observations
- Mark missing, negative or zero values for review unless the retailer explicitly uses them.
- Flag abrupt changes that exceed a business threshold and inspect the raw page.
- Record out-of-stock separately; do not treat it as a price drop.
- Detect parser drift by monitoring the share of pages with a price, currency and product ID.
Keep collection time and method with every row so an analyst can distinguish a real change from a failed selector or a different session.

Publish the observation date and conditions with any chart or alert. A “cheapest retailer” conclusion without those qualifiers can mislead even when every individual scrape was accurate.
Why the same product can show different prices
Time-limited promotions, inventory, geography, currency, taxes, shipping destination, sales channel and customer status can all change the displayed offer. The Federal Trade Commission’s January 2025 initial staff perspective on surveillance pricing described hypothetical examples in which systems could use signals such as location, browsing history and shopping behavior. It did not establish that every retailer personalizes prices or provide a prevalence rate.
In August 2026, the FTC sought comment on a proposed enforcement policy statement. The proposal says undisclosed use of personal data to set prices may implicate the FTC Act and other laws, while also stating that the agency does not have authority to ban personalized pricing in all circumstances. Treat that as a proposal and comment process, not a settled categorical ban.
For responsible measurement, use a controlled session, document the region and account state, minimize personal data, and avoid presenting one session’s result as a universal consumer price.

Scrapy.io documentation describes synchronous and asynchronous runs, dataset retrieval and scheduling; its FAQ describes JSON/CSV exports and pay-per-result billing. Those are vendor-described capabilities, not an independent performance ranking. Confirm current coverage, permission model, privacy terms, pricing and target-page support before committing.
Evaluate either approach on retailer permission, exact page coverage, variant and price accuracy, freshness, region/session support, export and integration, maintenance effort and total cost at your scale. No universal winner is established by these criteria.

Performance, reliability and cost controls
- Throttle per host: use bounded concurrency, backoff after 429 or 5xx responses, and a clear stop condition.
- Cache safely: retain responses for audit and avoid refetching unchanged pages; set a TTL that matches the business question.
- Separate discovery from monitoring: find product URLs occasionally, then monitor a stable list.
- Use idempotent jobs: a retry should not create duplicate observations without a run identifier.
- Measure quality: track success rate, missing-field rate, parser exceptions, response latency and the percentage of records requiring review.
- Budget the whole pipeline: include bandwidth, browser CPU, storage, proxy or hosted-run fees, engineering time and review of failed records.
Do not infer reliability from a single successful run. A small canary set across page types and markets can reveal selector drift before a full collection.

The request returns 403 or 429
Cause: access policy, excessive rate, missing required headers or an automated-traffic control. Fix: stop escalating requests, verify authorization, reduce concurrency, honor retry-after guidance and use an official feed where available.

The HTML has no price
Cause: client-side rendering, a variant that is not selected, geo-dependent content or a changed selector. Fix: inspect the response, wait for the relevant DOM element in an authorized browser session, set the intended market context and update the parser with tests.
The number is wrong by a factor of 100
Cause: cents versus currency units, thousands separators or locale-specific decimal commas. Fix: preserve raw text, parse with locale-aware rules and compare against a known page example before enabling the job.
Prices suddenly become identical or empty
Cause: a consent wall, bot-check page, timeout fallback or cached error was parsed as a product page. Fix: classify page outcomes, require a product identifier and price together, retain response metadata and alert on sudden distribution changes.
Two runs disagree
Cause: promotion timing, inventory, region, cookies, login state or a real price change. Fix: compare timestamps and session context first; then inspect raw captures and variant identifiers.

Should historical prices be backfilled?
Only if you have an authorized archive or a reliable historical feed. A current page cannot prove what its price was last month, and retrospective reconstruction from search snippets is usually incomplete.
