To make a widget as large as possible, open that widget’s size picker or contextual menu and choose the largest option it offers. Extra-large size is not available for every app or widget. Apple’s September 29, 2026 release notes specifically announce an XL Shortcuts widget for the desktop or Home Screen in iOS, iPadOS, and macOS 27.
How to add a large widget on iPhone
- Go to the Home Screen page where you want the widget. Press and hold an empty area until the apps jiggle.
- Tap Edit, then Add Widget.
- Find the widget and tap it. Swipe through the available size and style options; choose the largest size shown for that widget.
- Tap Add Widget, position it, then tap Done.
Some widgets can also be added by pressing and holding their app icon, then choosing a widget-size icon from the pop-up menu. The options depend on the app and widget. Apple’s iPhone widget guide describes the add and size-selection flow.
How to resize a widget on iPad
On the Home Screen, press and hold an app icon or an existing widget, then choose a size from the menu. Pick extra-large if it appears. Apple notes that app support varies: some apps offer only small and medium widgets, while others provide sizes up to extra-large. Apple’s iPad guide explains the available size choices.
How to add or resize a widget on Mac
Add a widget to the desktop
- Control-click the desktop wallpaper and choose Edit Widgets.
- Search or browse the widget gallery. Click a widget to add it automatically, or drag it to the position you want.
- Click Done.
Change an existing widget’s size
Control-click the widget and choose a different size from its menu. If you want a widget in Notification Center instead, open Notification Center and use its Edit Widgets button to add one. See Apple’s Mac widget instructions.

Why an XL option may not appear
- The app does not offer that size. Each widget’s picker shows the sizes supported by that particular widget; there is no universal XL control that applies to every app.
- You are looking at a different platform’s options. Apple’s guidance does not establish that widget sizes match across iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Check the picker on the device where you want to use the widget.
- The XL announcement is specific to Shortcuts. Apple’s September 29, 2026 release notes say that “a new XL size widget lets you quickly run a variety of shortcuts from your desktop or Home Screen.” This describes the Shortcuts widget, not a general XL upgrade for all apps. Apple’s 27 release notes provide the announcement.
Can a Mac show iPhone widgets?
Yes. A Mac can display iPhone widgets when the iPhone is using iOS 17 or later, both devices are signed in to the same Apple Account, and the iPhone is nearby or connected to the same Wi-Fi network. On the Mac, enable Use iPhone Widgets at System Settings > Desktop & Dock > Widgets. Apple documents these conditions in its Mac widget guidance.
If a widget prompts you to open its app on iPhone, that app is not installed on the Mac. Some third-party apps are not available on both platforms, so a widget that appears on the iPhone may not have a native Mac counterpart.
