External hard drives are most at risk from rough handling, heat, moisture, unsafe disconnection, and unsuitable power or strained connections. These are avoidable risks, not a ranking of the most common causes of failure, and no careful routine can guarantee a drive will last. Follow the instructions for your exact model and keep separate backups of important files.
1. Dropping, jolting, or moving a drive while it is on
Impact can damage a drive or interfere with read and write operations. Samsung warns that an impact may cause bad sectors and read/write errors; Western Digital (WD) advises against dropping, jolting, or shaking drives. These warnings describe risks, not a guarantee that one bump will ruin a drive.
For supported WD desktop drives, the manufacturer says: “Do not handle or move the drive while in use or powered on.” When carrying a drive, keep it secured so it cannot shift or strike other objects. A padded case can help protect a portable drive in transit, but it cannot guarantee protection from impact.
2. Heat and blocked airflow
Heat can put a drive outside the operating conditions its manufacturer specifies. WD says supported desktop units should be placed in a well-ventilated area, with at least one inch of clearance, and that airflow should not be blocked. Avoid enclosing a desktop unit in a cramped space or covering its vents.

WD lists an operating range of 5°C to 35°C for the external 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch drive categories shown in its guidance. That range is not universal: check the data sheet or manual for your exact drive before relying on it.
3. Moisture and unsuitable storage
Keep a drive away from damp areas, water, and prolonged exposure to high humidity. Seagate advises avoiding damp locations; WD warns that water, high humidity, and high salinity can damage drives in storage and recommends a cool, dry place. Samsung also cautions that prolonged moisture exposure can corrode components. The cited guidance does not establish a universal humidity threshold.

4. Disconnecting while the drive is in use
Unplugging a drive while the computer is writing to it can put files or the file system at risk. WD warns that unsafe removal can result in file-system damage, data corruption, or a read-only condition. Safely ejecting the drive before unplugging it reduces this data-integrity risk; the manufacturer guidance cited here does not establish that every unsafe disconnection physically shortens the drive’s life.

- Close files and applications that are using the drive.
- Use the Windows option to eject or safely remove the drive, then disconnect it after Windows indicates it is safe.
Eject it on macOS
- Close files and applications that are using the drive.
- In Finder, eject the drive before unplugging it.
5. Using unsuitable power or straining cables
If your external drive has a power adapter, use the included adapter or one that matches the manufacturer’s specifications. WD recommends a surge protector for external drives that use a power adapter. That advice does not apply in the same way to every bus-powered portable drive, which draws power through its connection to the computer.

Avoid severely bending or pulling cables, and do not rely on damaged or loose power connections. Samsung’s manual cautions against these conditions. Follow the power and connection instructions for your own model rather than assuming adapters or cables are interchangeable.

- Keep important files backed up in at least two separate places; a drive can fail even when handled carefully.
- Do not move a powered desktop unit, and secure drives during storage or transport.
- Leave desktop units room for airflow and use the temperature limits in the exact model’s documentation.
- Store drives in a cool, dry place away from moisture.
- Safely eject a drive before disconnecting it to reduce the chance of corruption or file-system trouble.
- Use the specified power supply; consider surge protection for a desktop drive with a power adapter.
Drive specifications and instructions vary by model. Consult your drive’s current manual or data sheet for its handling, temperature, and power requirements.
