In Ext JS 6.6 Classic, group grid rows by setting groupField on the store and adding the grid’s grouping feature. The code differs in other toolkits: Ext JS 7.0 Modern documents a grouped grid configuration instead. Check your toolkit and release before copying either pattern.
Group rows in an Ext JS 6.6 Classic grid
Sencha’s Ext JS 6.6 grid guide describes a two-part setup: tell the store which field groups its records, then enable the grouping feature on the grid.
- Set the store’s
groupField. Use the record field whose values should define the groups. - Add the grouping feature to the grid. Configure
features: [{ ftype: 'grouping' }].
This adapted example groups employees by department even though Department is not a displayed column. It follows Sencha’s Ext JS 6.6 Classic Grouping API example; confirm the syntax against your project’s exact release.
var store = Ext.create('Ext.data.Store', {
fields: ['name', 'seniority', 'department'],
groupField: 'department',
data: [
{ name: 'Michael Scott', seniority: 7, department: 'Management' },
{ name: 'Dwight Schrute', seniority: 2, department: 'Sales' },
{ name: 'Jim Halpert', seniority: 3, department: 'Sales' }
]
});
Ext.create('Ext.grid.Panel', {
title: 'Employees',
store: store,
columns: [
{ text: 'Name', dataIndex: 'name', flex: 1 },
{ text: 'Seniority', dataIndex: 'seniority', flex: 1 }
],
features: [{ ftype: 'grouping' }],
renderTo: Ext.getBody()
});
Customize group headings and summaries
Change the group heading
In the Classic Grouping API, groupHeaderTpl controls the text shown for a group. For example, groupHeaderTpl: 'Subject: {name}' adds a label before the group value. See the Ext JS 6.6 Classic Grouping API for the documented configuration.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Show a summary row
The API also documents showSummaryRow: true and per-column summary settings. Its examples use summaryType: 'count' and summaryType: 'average' to display aggregates. Enable a summary only when the aggregate helps interpret the records in that group.
Check toolkit and Ext JS version
The code above is for Classic, not a universal Ext JS recipe. Sencha’s Ext JS 7.0 Modern grouping guide describes a different interface: stores can be grouped under program control, and the grid has a grouped configuration. It also documents grouping by a field or a function. Do not substitute the Modern configuration into a Classic grid, or assume Classic examples apply unchanged to Modern.

For a Classic grid with locked columns, that API notes that grouping should be supplied as a config object so the grid can create two instances of the feature. Treat this as a version-specific implementation detail and verify it against the release you use. The same API documents a grouping function for more complex grouping cases; available interfaces can differ across releases and toolkits.
