ExpressVPN now has a graphical Linux application alongside its command-line interface. The GUI debuted as a v4 beta in February 2025 and was announced on March 4, 2025. It adds point-and-click connections and settings while preserving terminal controls for scripts, servers and headless systems.
What the Linux GUI includes
The first GUI beta covered the everyday controls Linux users previously accessed mainly through commands:
- Smart Location and manual server selection
- Split tunneling in both the GUI and CLI
- An advanced kill switch that can block all traffic when the VPN disconnects
- Automatic connection at startup
- Light and dark themes
- 17 interface languages
- Additional sign-in methods
- In-app update notifications
ExpressVPN has continued expanding the client since launch. Version 5.0.0 added an in-app speed test, dedicated-IP management, favorites, redesigned navigation, accessibility improvements, improved headless installation and post-quantum WireGuard. Releases in 2026 added compact mode, direct dedicated-IP setup, built-in IP, DNS and WebRTC leak checks, stronger keyboard and screen-reader support, and an MCP server for controlling the VPN from compatible AI developer tools.
Which Linux distributions are supported?
ExpressVPN’s current setup documentation officially lists these 64-bit platforms:

Distributions not listed by ExpressVPN are not officially supported. A 32-bit installation is not covered by this support list, even when the distribution itself is available in 32-bit editions.
How to install the ExpressVPN Linux GUI
- Download the installer. Sign in to your ExpressVPN account and open the Linux setup page.
- Run the installer. Launch the downloaded package from a terminal using the command shown by ExpressVPN for your distribution.
- Sign in. The app supports an email sign-in link, password sign-in or an activation code.
- Approve permissions. Grant the VPN permissions requested by the installer, then choose startup and diagnostics preferences.
- Connect. Select Smart Location for an automatic server choice or choose a specific location.
After installation, the GUI exposes connection, protocol, split-tunneling, auto-connect, kill-switch, language, appearance, speed-test and related settings. The exact labels can change as the Linux client evolves.

What if you are upgrading from the old CLI app?
ExpressVPN’s original v4 migration guidance warned users moving from the legacy v3 CLI to uninstall the older application before installing v4, because leaving both versions installed could cause conflicts. The product and version scheme have changed since that beta, so check the current migration instructions in the setup flow before removing anything. Do not assume the 2025 v3-to-v4 procedure is still the required path for every current release.
Can you still use the CLI?
Yes. The graphical client does not replace the command line. ExpressVPN continues to support terminal control, which is useful for SSH sessions, automation, servers and systems without a desktop environment. The GUI and CLI provide overlapping controls such as connecting to a location and configuring split tunneling, while headless-installation improvements make non-desktop deployment easier.

Split tunneling and kill-switch behavior
Split tunneling
Split tunneling lets you decide which applications use the VPN and which continue over the ordinary connection. ExpressVPN includes it in both the GUI and CLI. Review the application rules after major client or distribution upgrades, because a changed executable path can affect an existing rule.
Advanced kill switch
The advanced kill switch can block all network traffic whenever the VPN is disconnected. That is stricter than merely preventing traffic from selected applications from leaking outside the tunnel, so enable it only when you are prepared for ordinary internet access to stop during every disconnect.

What changed from the old Linux experience?
Before the 2025 beta, Linux users primarily operated ExpressVPN from the command line. The GUI removes that barrier for desktop users without taking away scripting or headless workflows. Later releases moved beyond basic connect and disconnect controls with speed testing, dedicated-IP tools, favorites, compact mode, leak checks, accessibility work and post-quantum WireGuard.
Not every feature arrived at launch
The February 2025 beta should not be treated as a description of the current app. Features such as the speed test, dedicated-IP management, post-quantum WireGuard, compact mode and MCP integration were added in later releases.

Who should use the GUI, and who should stay with the CLI?
- Choose the GUI if you use Linux as a desktop and want visible server selection, settings, themes, accessibility controls, speed testing or leak checks.
- Use the CLI for SSH-only machines, automation, repeatable scripts, servers without a desktop session or installations where a graphical layer is unnecessary.
- Use both when a desktop computer needs convenient manual control but your other Linux systems require scripted or headless connections.
