In September 2024, Cado Security reported two forms of abuse against an internet-exposed Selenium Grid honeypot: proxyware installation and cryptomining. The report highlights the risk of leaving Grid accessible without adequate controls; it does not show that every exposed server was compromised or announce a vulnerability in Selenium itself.
What is Selenium Grid?
Selenium Grid is a Selenium component that lets teams run WebDriver tests across different browsers and browser versions, including across multiple machines in Hub/Node or distributed deployments. Because Grid can interact with browsers and test environments, an exposed instance may provide a route into resources that should not be publicly reachable.
The Selenium project warns that an unprotected Grid can expose its infrastructure, internal web applications and files, and allow third parties to run custom binaries. Its official guidance is direct: “Selenium Grid must be protected from external access using appropriate firewall permissions.” Selenium Grid getting-started documentation
What attacks did Cado Security report?
Cado Security described two distinct attack patterns seen against its honeypot. These are observations from that honeypot, not evidence that all publicly reachable Grid servers were affected. The Hacker News’ September 12, 2024 report and CERT-EU’s September 2024 threat brief recount the activity.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Proxyjacking through proxyware
In one chain, attackers used Selenium’s goog:chromeOptions capability to pass a Base64-encoded Python script. The script retrieved a file named y, identified in the report as GSocket, which provided a reverse-shell or command-and-control channel. Follow-on scripts performed reconnaissance and downloaded proxyware including IPRoyal Pawns and EarnFM.
Proxyjacking is the unauthorized use of someone else’s internet connection or IP address as proxy infrastructure. If proxyware runs on a compromised host, its network address and bandwidth may be used to route other people’s traffic without the operator’s informed consent. The Dark Reading account describes the appeal of using legitimate proxyware services to appear behind residential IP addresses. Dark Reading’s September 12, 2024 reporting

Cryptomining after attempted privilege escalation
In the second chain, attackers delivered a Python script and then a Golang-based ELF binary. Cado’s account said the binary attempted privilege escalation using the flaw identified in the coverage as PwnKit/CVE-2021-4043, then installed a miner named perfcc. This describes an attempted Linux privilege-escalation step in that malware chain; it does not make CVE-2021-4043 a Selenium vulnerability.
Keep this activity distinct from the earlier SeleniumGreed campaign reported by Wiz, which used exposed Selenium Grid as a route to deploy XMRig. Cado’s honeypot account names perfcc, not XMRig. Wiz’s SeleniumGreed writeup

How widespread was exposure in 2024?
Dark Reading reported Wiz’s July 2024 scan as finding around 15,000 updated but internet-exposed Selenium Grid servers, and more than 17,000 exposed servers running outdated versions. Dark Reading said the outdated-version count later fell below 16,000. These are historical scan figures attributed to Wiz through Dark Reading, not a current 2026 count; they should not be combined into a single total.
Was this a Selenium vulnerability?
The reported entry point was exposure of Grid instances, rather than a newly disclosed Selenium product vulnerability. The separate malware chain’s attempted use of CVE-2021-4043 was described as a privilege-escalation step after delivery of the binary. The available reports do not establish that Selenium itself was vulnerable, nor do they show that every exposed deployment was compromised.

How should teams protect a Selenium Grid?
Start by limiting who can reach Grid, and keep it off the public internet unless remote access is genuinely required. The Selenium documentation warns that an unprotected Grid can expose internal applications and files, as well as permit execution of custom binaries.
Keep Grid internal when possible
- Check whether Grid endpoints are reachable from the public internet.
- Use firewall permissions and network restrictions to allow only required access paths.
- Consider which internal web applications, files, and test infrastructure a Grid session can reach, and restrict those paths accordingly.
Put controlled access in front of necessary remote use
If internet access is required, Cado Security’s Al Carchrie recommended placing a properly configured authentication proxy in front of Grid, with multifactor authentication as well as usernames and passwords: “If you need your Selenium Grid accessible via the Internet, we recommend that you deploy an appropriately configured authentication proxy server in front of the Selenium Grid application using multifactor authentication as well as username and passwords.” Dark Reading’s interview with Cado Security

These are operational safeguards, not a guarantee that one control alone makes a deployment secure. Recheck reachability and access rules as infrastructure changes; the reports do not identify a product-specific configuration that is effective in every environment.
Choose an access model based on who needs Grid
| Deployment choice | Exposure surface | Who can access | Authentication and internal assets |
|---|---|---|---|
| Internal, firewall-restricted Grid | Limited to allowed network paths | Users and systems on approved paths | Firewall permissions restrict external access; the Grid may still reach internal test assets, so those paths should be considered. |
| Remote access through an authentication proxy | Grid is reachable through a controlled boundary | Remote users who pass the configured access checks | Cado recommends an authentication proxy with MFA and usernames/passwords; account for the internal applications and files reachable from Grid. |
