To save Firefox add-ons, choose the method that matches what you need: use Firefox Backup or copy your profile for a saved copy of browser data, use Firefox Sync to keep data synchronized across devices, or use Add-ons Exporter to create a list of extensions and reopen their installation pages. These methods preserve different things: an add-on list is not a backup of installed extensions or their private settings and data.
What does “export Firefox add-ons” mean?
Firefox does not offer one universal export that covers every extension and all of its data. “Export” can mean three different tasks:
- Keep add-ons in sync: Firefox Sync keeps selected Firefox data, including add-ons, synchronized through a Mozilla account.
- Save a restorable copy: Firefox’s built-in backup saves browser profile data, which can include extensions. A manual profile-folder copy is another desktop option.
- Save a checklist: Add-ons Exporter makes an HTML list of selected add-ons and helps you open their listings so you can choose which ones to reinstall.
For moving Firefox data to a new device, Mozilla recommends its built-in backup workflow. For ongoing synchronization, use Sync. Choose an HTML list when you mainly want to remember which add-ons to reinstall.

How do I save my Firefox add-ons in a backup?
Use Firefox’s built-in backup if you want a saved copy of profile data rather than just a list of extension names. Mozilla’s backup options cover browser data such as extensions, bookmarks, settings, history, passwords, payment methods, and other browsing data. The available choices include a basic-data option and an all-data option; the latter includes sensitive data and requires a password. Mozilla says sensitive data in the backup is encrypted and password protected.

- Open Firefox’s backup feature and choose the backup option that matches the data you want to preserve.
- If you choose the option that includes sensitive data, set and keep the required password somewhere secure. You will need it when handling that protected backup.
- Save the backup file somewhere you can access when restoring Firefox. Mozilla’s restore guidance explains how to use the file on the destination installation.
Mozilla recommends this built-in backup for moving Firefox data to a new device. A backup is a saved copy; it is not the same as ongoing Sync.
Can I move my Firefox extensions to another device with Sync?
Yes. Firefox Sync can synchronize add-ons with another device, profile, or Firefox version when you use a Mozilla account. It is useful when you want Firefox data to stay synchronized rather than create a one-time export file.

Sync is not an HTML extension inventory or a standalone backup file. If you need a separate saved copy for a move or recovery, use Firefox’s backup workflow instead. Mozilla’s mobile guidance points users to Sync; its manual profile-copy instructions cover desktop Firefox.
How do I copy a Firefox profile on a desktop?
Mozilla documents manual profile-folder copying for desktop Firefox on Windows, macOS, and Linux. A profile is broader than an add-on list: copying it is a way to transfer profile data, not a way to create a neat, portable extension checklist. Mozilla recommends built-in backup when moving Firefox data to a new device.

Follow Mozilla’s current profile-copy instructions for your operating system. Avoid copying a handful of extension-related files at random: the supported method is to handle the profile as a whole. Manual profile copying is not Mozilla’s recommended mobile transfer route; mobile users should use Sync.
How do I export a list of add-ons and reinstall them later?
Add-ons Exporter is suited to keeping a checklist and reopening add-on pages, not to making a complete Firefox profile backup. Its Mozilla Add-ons listing describes a workflow that lets you select enabled and disabled add-ons, export the selection as an HTML report, then import that report in another supported browser or profile. You select entries to open their listings and install the ones you want.

- Select the add-ons to include from the enabled and disabled sections.
- Export the selected entries to an HTML report. Where available, the report includes links to their Mozilla Add-ons pages.
- On the destination browser or profile, import the report and select the add-ons whose listings you want to open.
- Review each listing and install the desired add-ons yourself.
The Add-ons Exporter listing explains: “Firefox does not allow extensions to install other extensions automatically.” The workflow therefore opens pages; it does not silently install a batch of extensions or establish that extension settings and private data have been restored.

Will extension settings and data come with the add-ons?
Do not assume that an extension list restores extension settings, account state, or other data the add-on stores separately. The backup and profile-copy options preserve broader Firefox profile data, while Add-ons Exporter is described as a list-and-reinstall aid; the cited descriptions do not establish a blanket guarantee that every add-on’s private data or settings will transfer.
Check each extension for its own export and import feature or account-based restore process. If you are using a Firefox backup or copying a profile, keep the original profile or backup until you have checked the destination browser and confirmed that the data you need is present.
How can I identify the add-ons in my Firefox profile?
Open about:support in Firefox and look under Add-ons to inspect extension identifiers. This can help you identify or reconstruct a list, but it does not back up the extensions or install them on another device.
