Open WebUI is a self-hosted chat interface, not an AI model: it connects to a model provider, and that provider performs inference. With a local model server and the required components available locally, it can be used offline; connect a hosted AI API and your prompts and context go to that provider instead. The endpoint you choose—not the interface alone—determines where inference happens.
What Open WebUI does—and where answers are generated
Open WebUI provides the interface for chatting with models. It can connect to local model servers such as Ollama, llama.cpp, or vLLM, or to a hosted provider through a supported API. It does not supply the model itself. See the official overview and the guide to connecting local and cloud models.
With a local connection, the model server runs inference on the machine or environment hosting it. With a hosted connection, Open WebUI sends the prompt and relevant context to the provider endpoint, which generates the answer and returns it to the interface. A hosted API requires an account and API key, but not local hardware for inference, according to the Open WebUI FAQ.
| Choice | Where inference runs | Data routing and internet dependence | What you need |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local model server | On the hardware running the selected local model server. | Prompts can stay within your environment if the model and required services are local and the setup does not call external services. | A reachable model server and downloaded model; hardware capacity depends on the model and workload. |
| Hosted model API | At the provider’s endpoint. | Prompts and included context are sent to that provider; using the hosted model requires connectivity to its service. | A supported provider endpoint, an account, and an API key; no local inference hardware. |
Can Open WebUI really work offline?
Open WebUI describes itself as usable offline and in air-gapped environments. The practical condition is that the deployment must already have the model and every service used by the chosen features available locally. A self-hosted interface connected to an external model API is not an offline AI setup, because inference and prompt processing still depend on that provider.

Optional features can have their own network requirements. The Quick Start documentation says the slim image does not bundle model capabilities, and its code interpreter fetches Python packages from a CDN unless it is disabled or replaced with an appropriate setup. Prepare and verify feature dependencies before isolating a deployment; “offline” does not make every optional feature work without them.
Choose an installation method and Docker image
The official documentation lists Docker, pip, uv, and a desktop app. For production deployments, it recommends Docker or Python installation. The basic Docker run example maps host port 3000 to container port 8080 and stores application data in a persistent Docker volume:

docker run -d -p 3000:8080 -v open-webui:/app/backend/data --name open-webui ghcr.io/open-webui/open-webui:main
Then open http://localhost:3000 on the Docker host. The Python installation path is:
pip install open-webui
open-webui serve
The image choice affects what is bundled, not whether the interface itself runs inference. Open WebUI describes :main as the batteries-included image and :slim as a smaller option for users relying on hosted APIs, a separate model server, or a separate Ollama instance. Its homepage lists compressed Linux/amd64 image sizes checked September 28, 2026; these are download sizes, not minimum disk or memory requirements.

| Image | Compressed Linux/amd64 download size | Bundled components and fit |
|---|---|---|
:main |
1.66 GB, reported by Open WebUI on September 28, 2026. | Batteries-included option; bundles embedding, speech, reranking, document-extraction, and database-client components. |
:slim |
176 MB, reported by Open WebUI on September 28, 2026; 89% smaller download than :main. |
Lean front end for hosted APIs or a separate model server. Some knowledge and voice features need external services, and it does not bundle the same model capabilities as :main. |
For Docker, keep the open-webui:/app/backend/data volume. The project repository warns that omitting it risks losing the database. Retain and back up the volume before updating or migrating the application.
Understand privacy and secure the deployment
The official FAQ states: “Open WebUI does not send your data to external services by default.” When you connect an external model provider, however, prompts and responses are sent as needed to generate the response. The chosen provider and any enabled tools therefore matter as much as where the interface is hosted.

Self-hosting gives the operator control over the server, database, storage, logs, backups, network placement, and model connections. That control also makes the operator responsible for protecting them. The project’s chat data privacy and encryption guide recommends encrypted database or filesystem storage, HTTPS/TLS, identity and access controls, limits on file uploads and tools, and controls on access to chats and exports. Temporary Chat reduces saved history; it does not prevent the active prompt from being processed by the configured endpoint or prevent enabled tools from storing data separately.
For access from outside a trusted network, the hardening guide recommends placing Open WebUI behind a VPN, zero-trust access proxy, or authenticated reverse proxy. Rate limiting and brute-force protections should be handled at the proxy or network layer. A default self-hosted installation should not be treated as automatically secure.

Check the license before changing branding or redistributing
The project’s license explainer says the branding clause applies from v0.6.6, effective April 19, 2025. It says internal deployments with 50 or fewer users may remove branding, while larger deployments must keep Open WebUI branding unless another stated exception applies. Versions v0.6.5 and earlier remain under BSD-3-Clause; v0.6.6 and later are not OSI-approved open source because of the branding clause. The project puts it plainly: “Open WebUI v0.6.6+ is not an OSI-approved “open source” license.” Read the full current license before removing branding or distributing a branded deployment.
