A 2025 study reported experimental contact lenses that convert near-infrared light into visible light, allowing human participants to detect signals and patterns they could not normally see. The lenses are a research-stage proof of concept—not a way to see heat or a commercially available night-vision product.
How the infrared-contact lenses work
The lenses contain engineered upconversion nanoparticles embedded in a soft polymer. The particles absorb near-infrared (NIR) photons and emit visible photons, which the eye can detect. In other words, the lens converts incoming light before it reaches the eye; it does not make the eye’s own photoreceptors directly sensitive to infrared.

The University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) describes conversion across approximately 800–1,600 nanometers. In one trichromatic design, nanoparticles respond to 980, 808, and 1,532 nm input and emit blue, green, and red light, respectively. USTC

The 2025 study in Cell reported that people wearing the lenses could discriminate temporal NIR signals and spatial patterns. A trichromatic version also allowed participants to distinguish multiple NIR spectra. The researchers additionally reported experiments in mice. These results demonstrate NIR perception under experimental conditions, not ordinary vision in the infrared range. Cell study

Some coverage describes seeing an infrared LED through closed eyelids. That is a specific observation involving an active infrared source; it does not mean the lenses reveal a person’s surroundings with their eyes shut or in darkness.
What the material results do—and do not—mean
USTC’s 2025 initial announcement reported 7–9% nanoparticle integration and more than 90% transparency in the visible spectrum. Those are laboratory material measurements, not specifications for a consumer lens. USTC’s later explainer gives 7% for a particular formulation. USTC announcement USTC explainer
Why this is not heat vision or general night vision
NIR is not thermal imaging
Near-infrared light is not the same thing as the thermal radiation a thermal camera uses to form an image of heat. The reported lenses convert NIR input and require active illumination from an external source. The work does not establish that wearers can directly perceive thermal emissions or see heat.
Darkness still requires an infrared source
The lenses do not simply reveal ambient surroundings in the dark. They need NIR illumination—such as an infrared LED—to provide light for conversion. The closed-eyelid observation likewise depended on an infrared LED.
Fine detail is limited
Converted visible light scatters, restricting fine image perception through the contact lens alone. The team also built a wearable eyeglass system with supplemental optics to improve spatial resolution. That system is part of the experimental work, not evidence that the contact lenses alone provide a sharp, camera-like image.

The reported lenses are research-stage technology. The available study and USTC materials do not establish retail availability, regulatory clearance, or long-term safety for routine consumer use. They should not be treated as a product a reader can order or wear as an alternative to night-vision equipment.
Potential uses and what remains to be shown
USTC identifies security, anti-counterfeiting, optical communication, industrial inspection, and navigation in smoke or fog as possible directions. These are prospective applications, not uses validated by the human proof of concept.
Compared with conventional night-vision equipment, the research points to a different sensing mechanism and a contact-lens form factor, but the lenses still need external NIR illumination and currently face a spatial-resolution limit. USTC characterizes conventional night-vision goggles as bulky and power-dependent; that is the institution’s framing, not a universal comparison across all devices. Practical deployment would also require evidence beyond the reported demonstrations, including safety and performance in intended uses.
