ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini can help with spreadsheet work, but their documented workflows differ—and none of the official product pages establishes which is most accurate on professional Excel workbooks. The shortcomings to watch are scope and fit: what file or sheet an assistant can see, whether it edits a live spreadsheet or returns a file or advice, and whether it supports the Excel features your work depends on.
What “fall short” means for professional Excel work
A spreadsheet assistant can produce a plausible formula or explanation without proving that it is correct for a particular workbook. Professional workbooks often depend on references, hidden rows or sheets, edge cases, and application behavior. The vendor documentation cited here describes product workflows and stated limits; it does not provide a matched accuracy benchmark for ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini.
It also matters where you use each assistant. ChatGPT offers both uploaded-file analysis and a spreadsheet-native experience; Claude documents spreadsheet file creation and editing as well as a separate Google Sheets integration; Google documents an AI function in Sheets. Those are different surfaces, not interchangeable tests of one shared capability.
Can ChatGPT work in Excel?
Spreadsheet-native sidebar
OpenAI describes ChatGPT for Excel and Google Sheets as an in-product experience that can help create or update workbooks using natural language. Its documentation identifies limits in that integration, including unsupported VBA automation and Power Query. Those are stated boundaries of the spreadsheet integration—not proof that ChatGPT cannot help draft VBA code or discuss a Power Query workflow in a different chat or file-analysis task. OpenAI’s ChatGPT for Excel and Google Sheets documentation is the place to check for current scope.
#1 Best Overall
Uploaded workbook analysis
Separately, ChatGPT can analyze uploaded spreadsheet files, answer questions about data, and create tables or charts, according to OpenAI’s data analysis documentation. An uploaded-file conversation is not the same as editing in the spreadsheet sidebar. The ability to inspect data or generate an answer does not establish that every workbook dependency has been understood or that calculations are error-free.
Can Claude create or edit an Excel spreadsheet?
Anthropic documents Claude as able to create and edit files, including Excel spreadsheets, and describes downloadable files and saving to Google Drive. That workflow can produce a spreadsheet file, but it should not be conflated with live editing inside Excel. The documentation describes supported functionality, not accuracy on a particular workbook. See Claude’s file-creation and editing documentation.
Rank #2
Claude’s Google Sheets integration is a distinct workflow. Anthropic says it can read and edit the spreadsheet open in the Sheets interface, but the integration cannot open, create, or copy other Drive files. That access boundary matters if a task depends on related files elsewhere in Drive. It is a limitation of the documented Sheets integration, not a blanket statement about every Claude file workflow. Details are in Anthropic’s Google Workspace documentation.

Can Gemini analyze an entire Google Sheet?
Google documents the AI function in Sheets for tasks such as generating text tailored to sheet content and summarizing or analyzing data. Google also says that this function does not access the entire spreadsheet or other files in Drive. That makes it a poor fit for a question whose answer depends on workbook-wide context or a separate Drive file unless the necessary information is supplied another way. The stated restriction applies to the AI function; do not assume it describes every Gemini-in-Sheets action. Consult Google’s AI function help page for its current scope.
Rank #3
Where these assistants can let Excel professionals down
Incomplete workbook context
A response is only as informed as the content available to that workflow. An uploaded copy, an open spreadsheet, a function operating on sheet content, and a request about linked files do not necessarily provide the same context. Before trusting an answer, establish which workbook, sheet, range, or file the assistant can actually access.
Advice is not the same as a validated edit
An assistant may return a formula, an explanation, a generated file, or an edit to an open spreadsheet. Those outcomes are different. Even when a formula is syntactically plausible, the spreadsheet application still needs to recalculate it, and you need to check whether it uses the intended references and behaves correctly on real data.
Advanced Excel workflows may be outside the integration
OpenAI explicitly lists VBA automation and Power Query among the features not supported by its documented spreadsheet integration. Treat that as a practical boundary when choosing that surface. It does not rule out using another ChatGPT workflow to reason about code or query steps, but it does mean the integration should not be assumed to execute those capabilities in Excel.
Vendor feature descriptions do not establish accuracy
The official pages describe available workflows and their limits; they do not compare the three assistants on the same professional workbook tasks. No comparative accuracy score, error rate, or productivity figure is established by those sources. A reliable ranking would require testing the same tasks under identified product versions and account plans, with workbook complexity and checking method disclosed.

How to verify an AI-assisted spreadsheet change
- Identify the workflow. Note whether you are using uploaded-file analysis, an in-product spreadsheet integration, a generated file, or a Sheets function.
- Confirm the available context. Establish which workbook and data the assistant can see; do not assume it can inspect hidden sheets, linked files, or the whole workbook.
- Check the formula or edit in the spreadsheet application. Review references, ranges, blanks, error values, hidden rows or sheets, and any relevant edge cases.
- Compare against a known result. Use a trusted calculation or independently checked sample before relying on the output for consequential work.
- Recheck current availability and limits. Product capabilities and account eligibility change; consult the vendor documentation for the exact workflow you plan to use.
How to choose among the three for a spreadsheet task
| Assistant and documented surface | What the documentation says it can do | Stated boundary relevant to Excel work |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT spreadsheet integration | Help create or update workbooks in an in-product spreadsheet experience | OpenAI lists VBA automation and Power Query among unsupported integration capabilities |
| ChatGPT uploaded-file analysis | Analyze uploaded spreadsheet data, answer questions, and create tables or charts | Uploaded-file analysis is a separate workflow; the cited documentation does not establish error-free workbook understanding |
| Claude file creation and editing | Create and edit Excel files, with downloadable files and Google Drive saving described | File creation/editing is not the same as live editing inside Excel; accuracy on a particular workbook is not established |
| Claude Google Sheets integration | Read and edit the open spreadsheet in Sheets | Cannot open, create, or copy other Drive files in the documented integration |
| Gemini AI function in Sheets | Generate sheet-tailored text and summarize or analyze data | Google says the function does not access the entire spreadsheet or other Drive files |
Choose based on the actual task and access pattern, not a presumed overall winner: a downloadable workbook, an edit in an open sheet, analysis of an uploaded file, and an Excel automation workflow call for different capabilities. Verify the exact product surface and current documentation before using it on a work-critical workbook.
