Evolution brings email, calendars, contacts, tasks, and memos into one desktop application for GNOME. Its documented account options include common mail protocols, calendar and address-book services, and Exchange connections that may need an additional package. It also lists import support for several widely used mail and personal-data formats, which can help when moving to Evolution.
What is Evolution?
Evolution is a personal information management application from the GNOME project. It combines email, calendaring, and address-book functions; its first-run documentation also covers tasks. The manual includes memo lists as an account type. GNOME’s project description and first-run guide describe these core functions.
Evolution is the desktop client. A related component, Evolution Data Server, provides shared address-book and calendar services that GNOME applications can access. That backend integration helps explain why contacts or calendar data configured through Evolution may also be available elsewhere in a GNOME desktop. GNOME’s developer documentation describes the service.
What account types and services does Evolution support?
The Evolution manual documents several kinds of accounts and services. The options relevant to a particular user depend on the server and the configuration details supplied by its administrator.

The account-types documentation also describes collection accounts: some servers advertise CalDAV or CardDAV sources together so Evolution can synchronize them as a group. Whether a service works in practice depends on server configuration and authentication; a listed protocol alone does not guarantee a successful connection.
Can Evolution connect to Exchange?
Exchange setup may require a separate package. The manual recommends evolution-ews for Exchange Server 2007 or newer, or OpenChange. It also documents an Exchange MAPI option with additional dependencies and notes that this method is not as performant as evolution-ews. These are documented setup paths, not a promise of compatibility with every current Exchange server or deployment. Check package availability for your Linux distribution and confirm connection requirements with your administrator.

Authentication is another possible obstacle. The manual cautions that a server’s advertised authentication mechanisms do not necessarily work with a given setup. If the connection fails, verify the server address, required authentication method, account permissions, and any organization-specific configuration with the administrator.
Can you use Evolution offline?
Offline use is documented, including offline mail and account-specific local synchronization options. The exact data available without a network connection depends on the account and its synchronization settings, so do not assume all messages, contacts, or calendar entries are stored locally by default. The Exchange EWS documentation also describes a cached offline address book. That is a specific documented capability, not evidence that every Exchange configuration or every Evolution account keeps a complete local copy.
What can you import when moving to Evolution?
The manual lists import support for the following formats. This establishes that Evolution can import data from these formats; it does not guarantee that every field, message property, or application-specific feature will transfer perfectly.

Evolution’s first-run assistant can help configure an email account and import data. The manual also covers restoring backups. For a migration, keep the original data and check a sample of imported messages, contacts, and events before relying on the new setup. The GNOME project page points to Linux distribution packages, Flatpak, and source code as ways to obtain Evolution. Package availability and versions vary by distribution and channel, so check your distribution’s software tools or the project page rather than assuming a particular release is available. The available documentation does not establish a current release number or a universal operating-system compatibility matrix.

For setup and troubleshooting, the project page links to the manual, the evolution-users mailing list, GNOME Discourse, and the GNOME issue tracker. When reporting an account problem, include the relevant account type and server context, but avoid sharing passwords or other sensitive information.
Who is Evolution for?
Evolution is worth considering if you want mail, calendars, contacts, and task or memo tools together in a GNOME desktop, especially when your services use the documented protocols or when GNOME application integration matters. Before adopting it, check that your required account service is supported, determine whether Exchange needs an extra package, confirm your offline synchronization needs, and verify that the import formats you rely on are listed. Those checks are more useful than assuming that a protocol or format label guarantees a perfect fit.
